Google Analytics New Version

Google Analytics

Google today sent an email to existing users announcing their new version of Google Analytics. As an existing user of Google Analytics, my account is automatically upgraded. New version of Google Analytics provides new view and new functions but the old reporting interface are still available (for at least one month) until everyone get use to the new interface.

What’s new in Google Analytics

I’m still playing with it, trying to get familiar and comparing it with the older version. According to Google, here’s what they’ve put in for the new version:

  • Email and export reports:Schedule or send ad-hoc personalized report emails and export reports in PDF format.
  • Custom Dashboard: No more digging through reports. Put all the information you need on a custom dashboard that you can email to others.
  • Trend and Over-time Graph:Compare time periods and select date ranges without losing sight of long term trends.
  • Contextual help tips: Context sensitive Help and Conversion University tips are available from every report.

Together in the notification, Google compile a good list of resources for Google Analytics:

Verdict

Navigations and links seems to be Google’s concentration on this upgrade. Important information and metrics gain better visibility. Also good job on implementation AJAX and Flash on the navigation. However this is quite a big change to the displays, it’ll take me some time to get use to it again.

I noticed compete.com.edgesuite.net in one of the flow of URLs supplying data to Google Analytics pages. Any chance there’s a relation between Google & Compete.com. Any potential buyout? (like Alexa by Amazon)…

Before you give a positive review you may want to go back and look at all the metrics/functions that are missing (no hrly reports, no cross reference by network, no conversion rate displayed with page data, no bulk export, city data is now 5 levels deep and no way to compare places not in same region, the list goes on and on.. for all its flashy new presence it is very difficult to read (no column summaries and graphs read down the page and so cannot be seen at the same time and the dashboard graphics are so large you can see 2 rows at a time..etc etc) there are many key metrics missing and the data that is there is difficult to reach (cannot segment from a table of URL’s have to go to the detail leve - very big pain for anyone who has to compare a multitude of url strings) I give it a D.. for the very few unnecessary extras I received I got a confusing and less capable product.. and since we spend in the 7 figures on kw’s it is not free either but a way to analyze so we can spend more money.. really quite a mess for the power user.. instead they went for bloggers who could really use about any program - not people who actually spend money with themm and trust me the UI does not get easier to read just more infuriating.

I agree, what a mess. They took a fantastic product and turned it into crud. I used to be able to see at a glance, all the important metrics of the site and respond accordingly. Now I find I have to dig multiple levels deep to find the same info. In particular burying the cities informaion is a waste of important demographical data. The two tone colors are hard to read, the 3D look of the old site was much better. An unfortunate step backwards for Google Analytics, especially with competitors like Nielsen nipping at their heels. As a business user that is payinf for the service, I am considering moving my account.
