Evolution of Photoshop: 1988 – 2009

Adobe Photoshop has always been one of the greatest (if not the best) software when it comes to manipulating and editing image. It all started off in 1987 with a Mac application call Display, created by Thomas Knoll. With almost two decades worth of changes and improvements, you almost can’t imagine how the first version of Photoshop would look like by looking at the Photoshop you have on your desktop.

In this post, we attempt to bring you back in time to look at how the very first Photoshop look like, then we scan through each evolution of Photoshop to the latest Adobe Photoshop CS4 in market today.

Used them all. Got 1.0 off a floppy someone left in the computer lab at RIT in 1989. Wasn’t there a program called BarneyScan that had something to do with PS early days too?

I love that no matter how much of an “expert” you are with Photoshop, there is always much more to learn.

this is pretty much the only program that was good before and each version got better and not worse…if you see for example paint shop pro…it used to be a good program, until it got bought by corel…

I go back further than version 1.0 – and Adobe’s ownership. It was called ImagePro (formerly “Display”). Then BarneyScan bought it when it was renamed Photoshop and shipped around 200 copies of the app bundled with their slide scanner. THEN Adobe bought it.

This is an awesome post and the only problem is it makes me feel so old. I can remember back to 2.5 and I don’t even think they had layers then. I often wonder how much I have taken advantage of after 7.1 but I think Lightroom is the best thing that has come along for pro photographers in a long time. It is also cool to see that Adobe is still the leader since so many programs come and go.

    Great article !

The only thing this is missing is the evolution of the hidden EasterEgg “About Photoshop” images.

    Command + About Photoshop.

I wonder why they took out the color in CS4… maybe it was to give the artists a better feel that wasn’t biased by the background?.

I’m told Adobe is now in the process of rewriting the whole shebang in Cocoa. Man oh man what a task!

And think how much better (if better is really possible) it will be then! CS5 Cocoa on a Mac Pro Supreme running Snow Leopard?

Was so ahead of it’s time. Buggy as hell though.

Started with version 5 in High School and realized then that this program was going to be required for this Industry. After all this time it’s still irreplaceable.

Great research, collection and article that took us down memory lane.

Powerful yes; great no way. I’ve never seen a more destructive and counter intuitive program than PS, when it comes to editing pixels and colour. When I prepare work for exhibition, I use a program long lost in the mists of time called Live picture, [I have a dedicated machine that it runs on] it stopped being sold at version 2.6, to this day it is less destructive and more intuitive while handling colour correctly better than photoshop, and it ALWAYS edited in 16 bits. Thankfully we now have programs designed for photographers to do photographic work not a one glove fits all tool. Any photographer not using Aperture or Lightroom in their workflow is wasting there time in photoshop imho.

yes there was. it ran on a proprietary box the size of an end table sold by Barco. I distinctly remember an operator taking measurements from the screen with a wooden ruler. There was a confused crowd of conventional film strippers who were told to learn it and lose their razor blades.

The earliest version of Photoshop reminds me of the current standard Paint application that comes with Windows. It really is impressive that in less than 20 years so many new improvements were added yet the appearance of the application is still very recognizable. Hard to believe that Photoshop has been around so long, but not surprising. It is definitely the best out there for editing photos, making it a best friend for amateur brochure printing designers!
