Adobe Photoshop has always been one of the greatest (if not the best) software when it comes to manipulating and editing image. It all started off in 1987 with a Mac application call Display, created by Thomas Knoll. With almost two decades worth of changes and improvements, you almost can’t imagine how the first version of Photoshop would look like by looking at the Photoshop you have on your desktop.
In this post, we attempt to bring you back in time to look at how the very first Photoshop look like, then we scan through each evolution of Photoshop to the latest Adobe Photoshop CS4 in market today.

Used them all. Got 1.0 off a floppy someone left in the computer lab at RIT in 1989. Wasn’t there a program called BarneyScan that had something to do with PS early days too?
ReplySteve Withington May 4th, 2009
pretty cool!
@david, did it really fit on ONE floppy? i thought it was more like several. : )

I believe there was an application called “paint and Draw that pre-dated PS on the Mac, with similar tools, i.e. paint bucket, pencil, eraser… Does anyone remember this app?

Thanks for the post and for fellow Twitter Designer, @mlane , for sharing this post with the Twitterverse. I love using Photoshop in my graphic design work and am jazzed about the endless art you can create with it. I love that no matter how much of an “expert” you are with Photoshop, there is always much more to learn.

Replykiedis May 5th, 2009
they always kept certain things on the same place since the start…they just added some other things…
Replythis is pretty much the only program that was good before and each version got better and not worse…if you see for example paint shop pro…it used to be a good program, until it got bought by corel…

I love the way they called Photoshop 2.5 ‘Limited Edition’. How do you get limited edition software?!
ReplyJennifer Farley May 5th, 2009
Brilliant! It must have taken ages to put this together.
I started on version 4 after a friend “loaned” me a copy. Never thought for a second that I would end up having a career based around it.

I go back further than version 1.0 – and Adobe’s ownership. It was called ImagePro (formerly “Display”). Then BarneyScan bought it when it was renamed Photoshop and shipped around 200 copies of the app bundled with their slide scanner. THEN Adobe bought it.
ReplyAndy May 5th, 2009
Great idea..loved this and bought back memories of my high school days teaching myself Photoshop

Realmente increible la evolución de Photoshop. Es sorprendente como todo evoluciona y mejor si es mi programa favorito… ya no puedo imaginar a la nueva versión, que sin duda nos dejará sorprendidos.
Really amazing developments Photoshop. It’s amazing how everything evolves and better if my favorite … I can not imagine the new version, which will no doubt leave us surprised.
ReplyCliff Spicer May 5th, 2009
This is an awesome post and the only problem is it makes me feel so old. I can remember back to 2.5 and I don’t even think they had layers then. I often wonder how much I have taken advantage of after 7.1 but I think Lightroom is the best thing that has come along for pro photographers in a long time. It is also cool to see that Adobe is still the leader since so many programs come and go.
Great article !

Replys2art August 23rd, 2009
Powerful yes; great no way. I’ve never seen a more destructive and counter intuitive program than PS, when it comes to editing pixels and colour. When I prepare work for exhibition, I use a program long lost in the mists of time called Live picture, [I have a dedicated machine that it runs on] it stopped being sold at version 2.6, to this day it is less destructive and more intuitive while handling colour correctly better than photoshop, and it ALWAYS edited in 16 bits. Thankfully we now have programs designed for photographers to do photographic work not a one glove fits all tool. Any photographer not using Aperture or Lightroom in their workflow is wasting there time in photoshop imho.
