45 Awe-Inspiring Landmarks Around The World

Landmarks are often structures such as cathedrals, museums, skyscrapers, hotels, homes, libraries, bridges and ruins. Natural phenomena in physical features such as mountains rock formations, rivers and waterfalls, can also be chosen as landmarks if they have special historical, architectural, or cultural significance. Historical landmarks are not just tourist attractions, they serves as a commemoration of a remarkably important national event. This allows us and for generations to come, to remember great cultures and events of the past that is worthy to record in its own history.

So this is a call for more – If you think there are some notable landmarks worth mentioning that I’ve missed out, please drop a comment below. Thanks!

    Great photos and awesome collection.

    My only comment is that while every country gets to “name” 1-3 places at most suddenly you get to US and it’s a whole laundry list. I understand that the list can be expanded again and again if we were to get more picky, but I still think it’s weird to have one of the youngest countries take first place in terms of amount of “amazing” and “memorable” places. Australia is filled with treasures like the Great Barrier reef for example, which is the only coral structure that can be seen from space. Now how come that didn’t make it, but the Central park did for example? Europe and Russia also have many architectural and biological treasures and so do other countries… so maybe things should be event out a bit ;)

    Still though. Gorgeous photography.

    If you’re including natural landmarks, Table Mountain in Cape Town, Sousous Vlei (largest shifting sand dunes) in Namibia, Okovango Delta in Botswana, Fish River Canyon in Namibia, Pamukkale in Turkey all awesome.

    And the Burj al Arab in Dubai should probably make the list too.

    Like the author said, this is just a start. I nominated Versuvius and Pompeii in Naples and Tharos on Sardinia, Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. Rome’s Colosseum deserves its place, but St. Peters should be there, too. How ’bout Greater Zimbabwa, Carthage, Temple Mount in Jerusalem, including Al Aqsa.

    This is an international site, some come on, internationals, help it get filled with the treasures of your country and travels.

    You really need to change the title adjective from awe inspiring to well known. I’ve seen all the UK landmarks and while they are good it’s only in a “see it if you can” kinda way. Maybe it’s because I’m from the UK but you wouldn’t catch me dead at any of those places by choice…

    Pictures are pretty, so 9/10 for the pictures but 2/10 for the selection, they are, after all’s said and done, standard tourist fodder destinations.

    Hi,
    Nice set of pictures.

    As said above, the “Grand Canyon” picture is from the Bryce Canyon, which is in Utha.

    I think you should add pictures from Israel. There are many historical landmarks in Israel -
    * The Western Wall (the Wailing Wall) in Jerusalem, the only remainning wall from the Jewish Second Temple (see http://www.2all.co.il/web/Sites/motyco%5C99887_(7).jpg)
    * The Temple Mount in Jerusalem (see http://www.efratnakash.com/galleries_l_pics/israel/jerusalem/11-0011.jpg)

    Ah, not quite the Bank of England, the corner of the BofE is on the left-hand edge of the picture. What you’re looking at there is the Royal Exchange. I think it was the site of the very first purpose built stock market – before this time traders traded shares in coffee houses.

    @Milander – There are some great places to visit in the UK, including the ones here. It just depends on how jaded you are.

    Grand Canyon Arizona, US
    Great Barrier Reef, Australia
    Banaue Rice Terraces, Philippines

    Cool list by the way! Makes we want to go to all of these.

  • pip

    Good list, but a little too NYC and England focused. The Bank of England and Empire State Building shots aren't all that great to rank within the top 45 icons in the world. Also, just a few of these landmarks are natural places rather than man-made. Not sure if the list was trying to make a distinction?

    Other suggestions:
    Australia: Great Barrier Reef or the Sydney Harbour Bridge
    U.S.: Chicago's Sears/Willis Tower
    Thailand: Grand Palace or Koh Phe Phe/Koh Samui

  • Zach

    From what I gather this isn't so much a “top 45″ list, as much as an ongoing list of visually awe-inspiring places. I don't have as much experience abroad and most of my US experience is in the west, so most of my suggestions are in the western US. I'll leave it up to others to add their favorites!

    US:
    Mount Rushmore, South Dakota;
    Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona/Canyonlands National Park, Utah;
    Monument Valley, Arizona;
    Meteor Crater, Arizona;
    Devils Tower, Wyoming;
    Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado;
    Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming;
    Yosemite National Park, California;
    Antelope Canyon, Utah; (seriously, check it out)
    Arches National Park, Utah;
    Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico.

    Most of these are natural wonders, with the exception of Mount Rushmore and Mesa Verde
