    I’m glad there is a growing interest in the use and evaluation of profile pictures on Twitter. Pictures are not only a means of identification but may also predict the actions of others.

    I am a researcher at Indiana University’s School of Informatics, and I’ve got a short survey investigating how individuals evaluate these kinds of Twitter profile pictures: “Use of Twitter Profile Pictures” (http://bit.ly/8iW1n)

    It only takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. I’d greatly appreciate your time and participation. Thanks.

    Hey, this is the first comment form in forever that I’ve filled out that reads “URI” instead of “URL.” I like that. However, I don’t think you’ve actually picked 100 “extremely creative” Twitter avatars, but that’s subjective. Don’t get me wrong, some are great. But some are bad. No names mentioned.

    I still think that unless you’re running a company Twitter account, you should just use your face, or a picture of yourself. If you can get people to remember you face, well … they’ll recognize you in person, not just on the Web. If anyone on Twitter actually goes outside, that is. :-)

    I agree with the statement that you need something better than a 16×16 site favicon for a Twitter avatar. I ended up going back and took my website favicon, and actually redesigned it for a clearer version which would fit the 48×48 dimension for my twitter account.

    Thanks for the feedback guys.

    We took a lot of consideration and factor in a lot of stuff like pixel-perfectness, composition, colors, etc when we choose. There are easily hundreds of nice and creative avatars during our research stage and these 100 we’ve chosen has really stand out. That’s why we labeled them extremely creative.

    @Zeldman Fixed.

    @M Bhatti They do look common when we put the best ones together. SmashMag’s avatar is nice because it’s simple and catchy. In the end, nice avatar don’t have to have complex design, it just need to be simple, catchy and instantly reflect the brand. That’s what we thought :-)
