How to Get Color Codes on Mac Without Third-Party Tools

Here’s a quick and easy way to get the color code of anything displayed on your Mac’s screen without installing any eyedroppers or color picking tools.

First, launch Spotlight by pressing the Spacebar + Command keys, then type in Digital Colour Meter.

When the app is open, you’ll see that as you move your cursor around the screen, it shows the colors that your cursor is pointing to.

If you want to save and use the color elsewhere, go to View > Display Values > As Hexadecimal.

Now, find the color you are looking for on the website or somewhere else, then hit Command + L to lock your cursor on that color.

Then, go to Color on the top menu bar and select Copy as Text, or use the shortcut key Command + Shift + T.

Now the color’s hex code is copied to your clipboard, ready for you to paste into any file or app.

You can also copy the selected color as an image instead of text by selecting the Copy as Image option, or Command + Option + T. This copies the color as a 72x72px image, which you can paste into a photo editing app like Photoshop.
