Online content theft is, unfortunately, a common incident these days. As soon as a site becomes popular, it\u2019s only a matter of time before someone reproduces it and tries to make a buck from it. One simply needs access to an RSS feed and a Google AdSense account to monetize from someone else\u2019s work; and sadly, this happens all too often.<\/p>\n

The offending sites can sometimes get higher rankings in search engines. This especially tends to happen when a new site launches and an established splog (spam blog), with some search engines\u2019 recognition, reproduces the content as its own.<\/p>\n

This happened to me when I launched my new design blog, blogvibe.com. To protect my work, I decided to do what I could to get the stolen article removed. Sharing with all Hongkiat readers, here is my experience dealing with online content theft.<\/p>\n

The Story<\/h2>\n

I wasn\u2019t surprised that my blog\u2019s content would eventually be copied, but I was surprised by who copied it. I posted an article called \u201c30 inspirational Japanese web designs<\/em>\u201c, which was, a day later, ripped off in its entire form by a site \u2013 let\u2019s call it \"CopyKat<\/em>\"<\/p>\n

This took me by surprise, as it was a site I often visited; it was linked to and featured on many popular design sites around the Web. I could barely believe that they\u2019d rip off other people\u2019s work, but after some research, it quickly became clear that the site copies articles from design sites all over the web.<\/p>\n

This wasn\u2019t just an automated splog; it was a manual effort from a person to copy and slightly alter articles and then repost them.<\/p>\n

Identifying the Thief<\/h2>\n

A simple Google search for my article revealed that it didn\u2019t rank particularly high \u2013 that\u2019s okay; it\u2019s a young site. But the surprising part was that CopyKat\u2019s stolen post ranked considerably higher \u2013 one of my biggest initial fears.<\/p>\n

The title was vaguely rewritten, while images were copied and reposted, as seen below:<\/p>\n

After it became clear that CopyKat stole my article, it was to find out where it was hosted.<\/p>\n

Figuring who host the website<\/h2>\n

The domain and web host for a website can be two different entities, as was in this case.<\/p>\n

First, I did a DNS lookup<\/a>, which gave me a corresponding IP, which I compared to Arin.net<\/a> and their IP allocation database. This revealed the hosting provider: Bluehost (the domain was hosted at GoDaddy<\/a>).<\/p>\n

I prepared a DMCA takedown notice to the host.<\/p>\n

Filing DMCA with The Web Host and its Advertiser<\/h2>\n

I wrote to BuySellAds, the popular ad provider for many design sites, which promptly removed CopyKat from its catalog. Afterward, I wrote a DMCA to Bluehost.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what I included in the DMCA and how it was written (feel free to download and use the template<\/a>):<\/p>\n

\r\nThis is a Notice of Infringement as authorized in \u00a7 512(c) of the U.S. Copyright law under the (DMCA) Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998.\r\nThe article(s) we are referencing in this letter is an unauthorized reproduction of copyrighted material originally found at: (link to original article), which was posted on: (date of the original post).\r\nThe article has been unlawfully reproduced on this site (link to the offending site).\r\nI (your full name) have in good faith belief that the disputed use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law.\r\nI (your full name), swear under penalty of perjury that the above information in this notification is accurate and that I am the copyright owner or am authorized to act on the copyright owner's behalf.\r\nName: (your name)\r\nEmail: (your email)\r\nSigned,\r\n(Your name)\r\n<\/pre>\n
I was surprised by the speed at which both DMCAs dealt; both the host and advertiser replied within hours, which was much faster than I expected.<\/p>\n
The only one I failed to get a reply from was the owner of CopyKat, which wasn\u2019t a surprise at all. In fact, throughout this entire ordeal, I never heard from the owner of CopyKat, despite several attempts to contact him\/her regarding the theft and comment on the reproduced article as well.<\/p>\n
Removal of Infringing Content<\/h2>\n
\"BlueHost\"<\/figure>\n
A few hours after Bluehost received the DMCA, the site was shut down. It remained down for around 24 hours, and after, it was back online, only without the stolen article. At this point, everything went according to plan \u2013 the article was removed, and the site was cut from the advertiser. I was satisfied.<\/p>\n
In Conclusion<\/h2>\n
Your content will be ripped off, it shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise to anyone, and often, it\u2019s an automated splog that might not be worth your time. In the case of CopyKat, there appears to be a deliberate effort to copy, steal and forge articles to appear original when they aren\u2019t. The site has been around for years, earning a steady income from other people\u2019s work via BuySellAds, Google AdSense, and other ad providers<\/a>.<\/p>\n
My experience with this case has taught me that it\u2019s not hard nor time-consuming to file a DMCA complaint to determine who hosts the site and whom to contact. And in every case, I got a response from the involved parties (except the site owner) within 24 hours.<\/p>\n
Sadly, however, the site is still up. And judging from its recent post, it\u2019s still ripping off design blogs. If you own a design site, I highly suggest you Google for your article, dig around a bit, and see if anything comes up with a similar title. Then inspect the posts, compare the images (and image names) to your article, and see if there\u2019s a match. You\u2019ll be surprised.<\/p>\n
