If you use ChatGPT<\/a> regularly, you\u2019ll find that OpenAI has released a desktop app. The desktop offers a quicker way to access ChatGPT compared to using a browser and logging in each time.<\/p>\n

After some time using it, I\u2019ve come across a few features and shortcuts that can help streamline things.<\/p>\n

\"ChatGPT<\/figure>\n

Here\u2019s a rundown of what I\u2019ve found useful. But first, a few initial thoughts based on my experience.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s Only for Mac \u2013 At Least for Now<\/h2>\n

At the moment, the ChatGPT app is only available for Mac users. OpenAI has mentioned that a Windows version is expected to be released later this year.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re on a Mac, it requires macOS 14+ and Apple Silicon<\/strong> (M1 or newer) to run. Unfortunately, if you\u2019re still using an Intel-based Mac, the app won\u2019t be compatible.<\/p>\n

Faster Access to ChatGPT<\/h2>\n

Once installed, the app provides easy access to ChatGPT from your desktop, even if it\u2019s not the active window.<\/p>\n

For example, if you\u2019re browsing and need to check something, pressing Option<\/span> + Space<\/span> will open a quick chat bar for immediate use. I\u2019ll go over more shortcuts<\/a> below.<\/p>\n

\"Quick<\/figure>\n

Search Your Previous Conversations<\/h2>\n

A feature that stands out is the ability to search previous conversations, which isn\u2019t available in the browser version.<\/p>\n

Instead of scrolling through old chats, you can type a keyword and quickly locate past conversations \u2013 saving time.<\/p>\n

Instant Screenshots<\/h2>\n

Another productivity feature is taking screenshots directly from the app.<\/p>\n

In the browser version, you\u2019d need to take a screenshot, then manually upload the file. With the desktop app, press Option<\/span> + Space<\/span>, select Take Screenshot<\/strong>, and choose between your active window or the entire desktop. No need to leave your current window.<\/p>\n

\"ChatGPT<\/figure>\n

ChatGPT Desktop Shortcuts<\/h2>\n

The desktop app also allows you to upload files, start temporary conversations, or switch models \u2013 just like the browser version, so we\u2019ll skip talking about them here.<\/p>\n
