An environment variable is a value available in your computer globally, which may contain anything from the path to the root directory, the home directory, and a secret token.<\/p>\n

This command can reveal the list of these environment variables. It can also be used to add, update and remove a variable.<\/p>\n

General syntax for env<\/code> command:<\/p>\n

\r\n$ env [OPTION]... [-] [NAME=VALUE]... [COMMAND [ARG]...]\r\n<\/pre>\n
\n
1. Run a process without the existing environment variables<\/h3>\n
env -i your_command<\/pre>\n
The -i<\/code> or --ignore-environment<\/code> option runs the command with an empty environment<\/p>\n
Example:<\/strong> Type env -i \/bin\/sh<\/code> to create a new environment without any existing environment variables<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2. Add an environment variable<\/h3>\n
env variable_name<\/pre>\n
Use the env variable_name<\/code> command to set a new environment variable.<\/p>\n
Example:<\/strong> Set a new environment variable<\/a> named Example<\/em>.<\/p>\n

3. Remove an environment variable<\/h3>\n
env -u variable_name<\/pre>\n
Use the -u<\/code> or --unset<\/code> option to remove the variable from the environment.<\/p>\n
Example:<\/strong> Removing the Example<\/em> environment variable<\/a>. As you can see in the screenshot, the variable we recently created no longer exists.<\/p>\n

4. Remove the line break from the environment variables list<\/h3>\n
env -0<\/pre>\n
The -0<\/code> or --null<\/code> option ends each line of output with a 0 (null) byte, not a newline<\/a>.<\/p>\n
Example:<\/strong> Using the env<\/code> command to separate output lines with the NULL character.<\/p>\n
