One has to maintain a record of one\u2019s stock holdings and keep track of the current gains or losses \u2013 all of which make it quite a hassle. But there is a simple and free way that allows you to manage your stock portfolio seemingly and that involves using <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/\">Google Sheets<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By creating simple Google Sheets, you can easily track all your stock holdings and other aspects of your investment.<\/p>\n<p>In this article, I am going to guide you on how to create Google sheets for managing aspects like all the stocks you hold, buying price and the current price of the stocks, your cost of buying as well as your gains and losses in numbers and percentages \u2013 that too in real-time, of-sort.<\/p>\n<p class=\"video-19by6\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/30C737RVwIc\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>Create, and track stocks with Google Sheets<\/h2>\n<p>Start off by <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/u\/0\/?tgif=d\">creating a new spreadsheet<\/a>. Give it a name, and add the following column names:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stock,<\/li>\n<li>Buy Price,<\/li>\n<li>Current Price,<\/li>\n<li>Shares Own,<\/li>\n<li>Total Cost,<\/li>\n<li>Gain\/Loss (%),<\/li>\n<li>and Gain\/Loss ($)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/track-manage-stocks-google-sheet\/01.jpg\" alt=\"add cols\" width=\"1498\" height=\"609\"><\/figure>\n<p>Hold the <span class=\"key\">Command<\/span> (macOS) or <span class=\"key\">Control<\/span> (Windows) key, and select the columns \u201c<strong>Buy Price<\/strong>\u201c, \u201c<strong>Current Price<\/strong>\u201c, \u201c<strong>Total Cost<\/strong>\u201c, and \u201c<strong>Gain\/Loss ($)<\/strong>\u201c.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/track-manage-stocks-google-sheet\/02.jpg\" alt=\"select cols\" width=\"1000\" height=\"383\"><\/figure>\n<p>On the sheet\u2019s menu, select Format &gt; Number &gt; Currency.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/track-manage-stocks-google-sheet\/03.jpg\" alt=\"mark currency\" width=\"1672\" height=\"990\"><\/figure>\n<p>Next, with the entire column of \"<strong>Gain\/Loss(%)<\/strong>\", select from menu Format &gt; Number &gt; Percent<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/track-manage-stocks-google-sheet\/04.jpg\" alt=\"mark percentage\" width=\"1672\" height=\"987\"><\/figure>\n<p>Go to the cell directly under \"<strong>Current Price<\/strong>\", and type in the following: <code>=GOOGLEFINANCE(A2)<\/code>, and hit <span lass=\"key\">Enter<\/span>. It will show <em>#N\/A<\/em> for now and it\u2019s alright.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/track-manage-stocks-google-sheet\/05.jpg\" alt=\"add googlefinance(a2)\" width=\"1502\" height=\"569\"><\/figure>\n<p>Now, go to the cell under \"<strong>Total Cost<\/strong>\" and type in the following: <code>=C2*D2<\/code>, and hit .<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/track-manage-stocks-google-sheet\/06.jpg\" alt=\"add formula\" width=\"1491\" height=\"568\"><\/figure>\n<p>Next, go to the cell under \"<strong>Gain\/Loss %<\/strong>\", enter the following: <code>=C2\/B2-1<\/code>, then hit <span class=\"key\">Enter<\/span>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/track-manage-stocks-google-sheet\/07.jpg\" alt=\"add formula\" width=\"1495\" height=\"571\"><\/figure>\n<p>And lastly, go to the cell under \"<strong>Gain\/Loss ($)<\/strong>\", enter the following: <code>=E2-(B2*D2)<\/code>, and hit <span class=\"key\">Enter<\/span>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/track-manage-stocks-google-sheet\/08.jpg\" alt=\"add formula\" width=\"1499\" height=\"572\"><\/figure>\n<p>Select the entire 2nd row until G2, move your cursor on top of the tiny blue square in G2, and drag it down as much as you want. This will copy all formulas in row 2 to the rest.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/track-manage-stocks-google-sheet\/08.5.gif\" alt=\"select drag rows\" width=\"1486\" height=\"660\"><\/figure>\n<p>Before we proceed, let\u2019s do some explanation on how this is going to work, with Apple\u2019s stocks as an example.<\/p>\n<p>Say you\u2019ve purchased 100 shares of Apple stocks at the price of $150. You would then enter the following data in the sheet:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stocks: AAPL<\/li>\n<li>Buy Price: 150<\/li>\n<li>Shares Own: 100<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And the spreadsheet will provide you with all the other information:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Current Price:<\/strong> Current Apple\u2019s share price according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance\/\/\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Google Finance<\/a> (Price may have a 20-minutes delay)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Total Cost:<\/strong> The total amount of money (your capital) used to buy Apple shares.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gain\/Loss (%):<\/strong> Your current gain, or losses, in percentage.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gain\/Loss ($):<\/strong> Your current gain, or losses, in dollars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/track-manage-stocks-google-sheet\/09.jpg\" alt=\"sheet\" width=\"1495\" height=\"574\"><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Under \"<strong>Stocks<\/strong>\" Column, instead of entering the company\u2019s name (I.e, Apple), you will need to enter its respective ticker symbol (i.e., APPL).
