They might even add something extra incentive \u2013 like bulk purchase \u2013 to sweeten the deal.<\/p>\n<p>However, when you\u2019ll tell them that you <strong>don\u2019t have a PayPal account<\/strong>, they will send a link to open a new PayPal account.<\/p>\n<h3>What happens behind the scene<\/h3>\n<p>Actually, the buyer has <strong>no interest in buying<\/strong> something from you. They just want you to <strong>open a PayPal account<\/strong> using their provided link. This is actually a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/phishing-reports-prevention\/\" rel=\"noopener\">phishing attack<\/a>, as this link is a fake one that redirects you to a <strong>fake PayPal sign up form<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>All the <strong>information you\u2019ll enter in this form will be directly sent to the scammer<\/strong>. This includes your email address, home address, phone number, credit card details, security question, password, and many other types of sensitive information.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/paypal-scams-targeting-sellers\/fake-paypal-account-opening.jpg\" alt=\"fake PayPal sign up form\" width=\"800\" height=\"797\"><\/figure>\n<p>The scammer can use all of this information to hack your other accounts, including <strong>financial and social media<\/strong> accounts. Always go to the official website and sign up or log in from there. Other than that, the phishing website URL will also not be from <strong>\u201cpaypal.com\u201d<\/strong>, it could be similar such as <strong>\u201cpaypall.com\u201d<\/strong> which is obviously a fake.<\/p>\n<p>And if you have seen <strong>PayPal\u2019s actual sign up page<\/strong> before, then you\u2019ll notice some changes in the design as well.<\/p>\n<p>Simply don\u2019t take this bait and <strong>open a PayPal account from the official website<\/strong> and continue the transaction (if the buyer still wants to buy, that is).<\/p>\n<h2>Sending purchased item to a different address<\/h2>\n<p>The buyer will tell you that they <strong>want to buy the item for a friend<\/strong> and want to send it as a surprise gift. Therefore, although they will make the payment through their PayPal account, but the item <strong>needs to be delivered<\/strong> to a different address.<\/p>\n<h3>What happens behind the scene<\/h3>\n<p>PayPal takes no <strong>responsibility for delivery of goods<\/strong> that have not been delivered to the address registered with the buyer\u2019s PayPal account. Expecting that you don\u2019t know this information, the buyer will tempt you to <strong>make the delivery to a different address<\/strong> (may even add extra money).<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/paypal-scams-targeting-sellers\/address-not-registered.jpg\" alt=\"delivery to a different address\" width=\"800\" height=\"587\"><\/figure>\n<p>When you will deliver the item, the buyer will <strong>open a dispute<\/strong> that they never received the item. Now even if you provide shipping confirmation receipt, <strong>PayPal can\u2019t do anything about it<\/strong> as it has not been shipped to the address registered with PayPal. The buyer will get their money back, and you just lose your sold item.<\/p>\n<h3>How to protect against such scam<\/h3>\n<p>It is <strong>clearly written in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.paypal.com\/re\/webapps\/mpp\/paypal-safety-and-security\">PayPal security guidelines<\/a><\/strong> that you should never deliver an item to an address other than the one it is registered with on PayPal. So simply <strong>declining such requests<\/strong> is enough for protection.<\/p>\n<h2>Buyer overpays<\/h2>\n<p>While buying some goods from you, <strong>the buyer will pay some extra money<\/strong>. When the actual owner will find out about the money transfer, they will ask <strong>PayPal to return the full amount<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>PayPal will <strong>return the money to the PayPal account owner<\/strong> and you will get your item back. However, you\u2019ll lose the extra money that you<strong> sent to the scammer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The buyer <strong>can also do this from their actual PayPal account<\/strong>, and later open a dispute and claim that they don\u2019t want the item for any reason and want to return it for a refund. They will get their full money back and the extra money you wired will also be there\u2019s.<\/p>\n<h3>How to protect against such scam<\/h3>\n<p>While doing a PayPal transaction, <strong>stick with only PayPal<\/strong> in the whole process. PayPal can only offer protection for transactions that have been made using its platform.
