But other than security and privacy factors; VPN can also be useful for gaming and streaming through a gaming console, like the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.playstation.com\/en-sg\/ps5\/\">Sony PlayStation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, the discount coupons and gift cards on the PlayStation store may only be applicable in a particular region or certain games may launch earlier in some countries. So, using a VPN, you can circumvent this geo restriction. Also, if you like watching <em>Netflix<\/em>, <em>Youtube<\/em>, <em>Twitch<\/em>, or other digital content through your PlayStation, the VPN will allow you to access region-restricted content easily.<\/p>\n<p>So in this post, we\u2019re going to talk about how to get your Playstation connected to a VPN. Here <strong>we will be using <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/go\/surfshark\">SurfShark VPN<\/a><\/strong>, and we will show you two different methods to set it up:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#method01\">VPN on Playstation via router<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#\">VPN on Playstation via PC Hotspot<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you don\u2019t have a SurfShark account, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/go\/surfshark-signup\">click here<\/a> to sign up for one.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"method01\">Method 1 \u2013 Connect PS to VPN via Router<\/h2>\n<p>First, we are going to see how to set up VPN directly in your Router. This will allow any device, including your PlayStation, connected to this router to automatically connect to VPN so you don\u2019t need to enable VPN on your device.<\/p>\n<p>Before we get started, here are a few things you will need:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#routerip\">Router\u2019s IP Address<\/a>,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#surffshark-crendentials\">SurfShark Service Credentials<\/a>,<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#surfsharkl-config-file\">SurfShark server configuration file<\/a>, and<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#compatible-router\">Compatible router<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 id=\"routerip\">1. Router\u2019s IP address<\/h3>\n<p>In general, your router\u2019s IP address could be <code>192.168.1.1<\/code>, <code>192.168.100.1<\/code> or <code>10.0.0.1<\/code>, but if that\u2019s not the case, you can follow the instructions below to retrieve it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Windows users (Method #1):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click the <strong>Search Icon<\/strong> on the bottom left, type <strong>\"Command Prompt\"<\/strong> and hit <strong>Enter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/search-icon-command-prompt.jpg\" alt=\"windows search icon\" width=\"1097\" height=\"680\"><\/figure>\n<li>Type<strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows-server\/administration\/windows-commands\/ipconfig\"> <code>ipconfig<\/code><\/a><\/strong> in Command Prompt app and hit <strong>Enter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/command-prompt.jpg\" alt=\"ipconfig command prompt\" width=\"1116\" height=\"688\"><\/figure>\n<li>Your router\u2019s IP address is displayed under <strong>\"Default Gateway\"<\/strong>. Note the IP address down for later use.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Windows users (Method #2):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click <strong>Search Icon<\/strong> on bottom left, type <strong>\"Control Panel\"<\/strong> and hit <strong>Enter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Control Panel<\/strong> windows. click \u201c<strong>View network status and tasks<\/strong>\u201d under <strong>\u201cNetwork and Internet\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/windows-control-panel.jpg\" alt=\"network status and tasks\" width=\"1323\" height=\"688\"><\/figure>\n<li>Under <strong>\"View your active networks\"<\/strong>, look for <strong>Connections<\/strong>. SurfShark Service Credentials<\/h3>\n<p>To retrieve your SurfShark service credentials, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Login to SurfShark, then navigate to the <strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/my.surfshark.com\/vpn\/manual-setup\/router\">Manual Setup &gt; Router<\/a><\/strong> on SurfShark dashboard.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the <strong>Credentials<\/strong> tab. SurfShark server configuration file<\/h3>\n<p>We also need the OpenVPN configuration file. Follow these instructions below to get one:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Navigate to <strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/my.surfshark.com\/vpn\/manual-setup\/router\">Manual Setup &gt; Router<\/a><\/strong> on your SurfShark dashboard.<\/li>\n<li>Click<strong>\"Locations\" <\/strong>tab. Here\u2019s a list of locations with the OpenVPN config you can download.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/surfshark-locations.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"480\"><\/figure>\n<li>Single click on the location you want to use.<\/li>\n<li>In the new pop up window, click<strong>\"Download TCP\" <\/strong>to download the desired location\u2019s .ovpn file.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/surfshark-locations-download.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"480\"><\/figure>\n<li>Keep the downloaded .ovpn file easily accessible (i.e, on Desktop) for later use.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 id=\"compatible-router\">4. Compatible router<\/h3>\n<p>Last but not least, you will need a compatible router in order for this to work.<\/p>\n<p>In this tutorial, we <strong>will be using an ASUS router <\/strong>as it has built-in support for OpenVPN in their firmware right out of the box (no need to install new firmware in the router).<\/p>\n<p>Other compatible routers include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wiki.dd-wrt.com\/wiki\/index.php\/Supported_Devices\"><strong>DD-WRT wireless router<\/strong><\/a> <em>(<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.surfshark.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360003086114-How-to-set-up-Surfshark-VPN-on-DD-WRT-router-\">tutorial<\/a>)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/openwrt.org\/toh\/start\"><strong>OpenWRT<\/strong><\/a> <em>(<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.surfshark.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360010347939-How-to-set-up-a-router-with-OpenWRT\">tutorial<\/a>)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tomato.groov.pl\/?page_id=69\"><strong>Tomato<\/strong><\/a> <em>(<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.surfshark.com\/hc\/en-us\/articles\/360003780834-Tomato-router-tutorial\">tutorial<\/a>)<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If, however, you are using a non-compatible router, try our <a href=\"#method02\">second method<\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Let\u2019s get started\u2026<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Type the IP address <a href=\"#routerip\">we retrieved earlier<\/a> in the browser and hit <strong>Enter<\/strong>. You will be directed to the router\u2019s admin interface. (In this case, we\u2019re using an ASUS router, as seen below.)<\/li>\n<li>Login with your username and password. The Playstation should now be connected to your newly created SurfShark VPN.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/surfshark-vpn-on-playstation.jpg\" alt=\"surfshark vpn playstation\" width=\"1694\" height=\"940\"><\/figure>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"method02\">Method 2 \u2013 Connect PS to VPN via PC<\/h2>\n<p>In case, you don\u2019t have a compatible router to install a VPN configuration, you can use your PC as a tunnel for your PlayStation to the VPN-enabled connection.<\/p>\n<p>The only thing you need in order to proceed in this method is to download, and install the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/surfshark.com\/\">SurfShark VPN app<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Navigate to TAP adapter settings<\/h3>\n<p>To begin, we are going to check the Windows TAP adapter. TAP adapter is a network driver that\u2019s required for the VPN to establish a secure connection on your computer.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click the <strong>Wi-Fi icon<\/strong> on the bottom right of your screen, then click <strong>\"Open Network & Internet settings\"<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/\/network-settings.jpg\" alt=\"network settings\" width=\"497\" height=\"267\"><\/figure>\n<li>Depending on your current computer connection to the Internet, go to either<strong>\"Wi-Fi\"<\/strong>or<strong> \"Ethernet\" <\/strong>section.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/\/wifi-ethernet.jpg\" alt=\"internet options\" width=\"881\" height=\"362\"><\/figure>\n<li>Scroll down, find and click on <strong>\"Change adapter options\"<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/\/adapter-options.jpg\" alt=\"adapter options\" width=\"1176\" height=\"491\"><\/figure>\n<li>In this new window, you should see the <strong>SurfShark TAP<\/strong> adapter along with other adapter as seen below, including one that we are currently using to connect to the Wi-Fi. Keep this open, proceed to the next step.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/\/network-adapters.jpg\" alt=\"network adapter\" width=\"1003\" height=\"263\"><\/figure>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Step 2: Enable Mobile Hotspot<\/h3>\n<p>We need to enable the mobile hotspot that will other device to connect to the Internet through our Windows PC.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click <strong>Wi-Fi icon<\/strong> again, then go to <strong>\"Open Network & Internet settings\"<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/\/network-settings.jpg\" alt=\"network settings\" width=\"497\" height=\"267\"><\/figure>\n<li>Then, on the left sidebar, look for <strong>\"Mobile hotspot\"<\/strong>. Click on it.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/\/mobile-hotspot-check.jpg\" alt=\"mobile hotspot check\" width=\"949\" height=\"631\"><\/figure>\n<li>Under \"<strong>Share my Internet\u2026.<\/strong>\", click once to turn on Mobile hotspot. Your <strong>Network name<\/strong> and <strong>Network password<\/strong> will be displayed. (<strong>Note:<\/strong> You can change the network\u2019s name or password by clicking <strong>Edit<\/strong>.)<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/\/mobile-hotspot.jpg\" alt=\"mobile hotspot\" width=\"834\" height=\"444\"><\/figure>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Step 3: Configure the VPN adapter<\/h3>\n<p>Switch over to the previous <strong>Network Connections<\/strong> window that we\u2019ve opened up in the initial steps to check the TAP adapter.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You should see a new network adapter has appeared after Mobile Hotspot has been enabled. This adapter will be used to share the Internet connection from the PC.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/\/network-adapter-new.jpg\" alt=\"network adapter\" width=\"993\" height=\"263\"><\/figure>\n<li>Left-click once on <strong>\"SurfShark TAP\" <\/strong>adapter, then right-click and select the<strong>\"Properties\"<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/\/surfshark-adapters.jpg\" alt=\"surfshark adapter\" width=\"997\" height=\"403\"><\/figure>\n<li>In the new window, go to the <strong>\"Sharing<\/strong>\" tab.<\/li>\n<li>Next, check <strong>\u201cAllow other network users to connect\u2026.\u201d<\/strong>. Then, under <strong>\u201cHome networking connection:\u201d<\/strong> add the exact name of the new network adapter for the Mobile hotspot.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/\/sharing-choose-adapters.jpg\" alt=\"shareing choose adapters\" width=\"900\" height=\"388\"><\/figure>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Step 4: Connect to the VPN<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, we are going to enable the VPN on our PC.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Lauch the SurfShark app. Navigate to <strong>Settings &gt; Advanced &gt; Protocol<\/strong>, then select the <strong>OpenVPN (UDP)<\/strong> protocol.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/use-vpn-playstation\/\/udp-protocol.jpg\" alt=\"udp protocols\" width=\"693\" height=\"696\"><\/figure>\n<li>Connect to the VPN location.
