System Customization<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019re not satisfied after applying the theme, you can always switch back to the original theme named \u201c<strong>Windows 10<\/strong>\u201c. But sometimes, you may like the color of a theme, however, maybe you don\u2019t like its background or sounds. This brings us to the question: <strong>what can you do if you dislike a part of a theme?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You can customize the theme itself. You can click on each option to change it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What will be the result? Using third-party themes<\/h2>\n<p>So far, it was all about the native themes available in Windows 10. If those don\u2019t suffice your creative mind, you can always <strong>opt for third-party themes<\/strong>. However, you must know that themes from third-party developers may not be as perfect as the default themes. Don\u2019t worry \u2014 they\u2019re elegant!<\/p>\n<p>However, they may just break your system or mess things up in Windows 10. Therefore, you must always <strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-in\/help\/4027538\/windows-create-a-system-restore-point\">create a restore point<\/a> before trying out anything<\/strong> given below. Since I warned you, let\u2019s check the places to get them. I found two good repositories to download third-party themes for Windows 10:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deviantart.com\/customization\/skins\/windows\/win10\/popular-all-time\/?offset=0\">Windows 10 Themes on DeviantArt<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/themepack.me\/\">Windows 10 Themes on ThemePack.me<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Install the prerequisite tools<\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s begin by installing the prerequisite software for supporting the third-party theme\u2019s installation in Windows 10.<\/p>\n<p>There are two tools we need for the theme we\u2019re going to install in this tutorial, but if you\u2019re downloading some other theme, please <strong>check its prerequisites properly<\/strong> and install them.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/msfn.org\/board\/topic\/170375-oldnewexplorer-118\/\">OldNewExplorer<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 It rolls back modern changes made to the File Explorer, thus making the explorer compatible with third-party themes.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.syssel.net\/hoefs\/software_uxtheme.php?lang=en\">UltraUXThemePatcher<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 It patches the system files for letting third-party themes to make design or theme changes to Windows 10.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Install a third-party theme<\/h3>\n<p>In this tutorial, we\u2019re going to install Ades \u2014 a theme by Unisira. Please note that the steps may differ per theme (for example, the folder to copy the theme files to or the need to install icon packs), so always <strong>check the guide given with a third-party theme<\/strong> before trying to install it. That said, let\u2019s install Ades:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>First off, search for \u201c<strong>Create a restore point<\/strong>\u201d and open the tool.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Create<\/strong>, then enter a name and click the <strong>Create<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/truly-customizing-windows-10\/create-restore-point-windows-10.jpg\" width=\"546\" height=\"572\" alt=\"Create a restore point in Windows 10\"><\/figure>\n<li>After the point is created, install the prerequisites given above.<\/li>\n<li>Now, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deviantart.com\/unisira\/art\/Ades-Theme-for-Windows-10-600210043\">download Ades from DeviantArt<\/a> and extract the archive.<\/li>\n<li>In the extracted files, open the folder per your system version (I need the files for 1709 since my version is 1803) <strong>&gt; Themes<\/strong>, and copy all content to this folder: \u201cC:\\Windows\\Resources\\Themes\u201d (confirm if asked).<\/li>\n<li>Then, open <strong>Settings &gt; Personalization<\/strong> and head over to <strong>Themes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/truly-customizing-windows-10\/apply-ades-theme-windows-10.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"636\" alt=\"Apply Ades theme in Windows 10\"><\/figure>\n<li>On the screen, under <strong>Apply a theme<\/strong>, you\u2019ll see <strong>Ades &gt;<\/strong> click it.<\/li>\n<li>Voila! You\u2019ll now see your screen themed as in the given screenshot.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/truly-customizing-windows-10\/ades-theme-applied-windows-10.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" alt=\"Ades theme applied in Windows 10\"><\/figure>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Optionally, you can download and install <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/snowie2000\/mactype\/releases\">MacType<\/a> for displaying <strong>cleaner fonts<\/strong> on your system. The same also applies for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deviantart.com\/unisira\/art\/WinRemix-iPACK-for-windows-7-8-8-1-and-10-601279163\">WinRemix iPACK<\/a>, which will install the <strong>green icons<\/strong> shown in the above screenshot. But, they\u2019re totally optional.<\/p>\n<h3>Remove a third-party theme<\/h3>\n<p>If you wish to go back to the default theme or one of the themes from Microsoft Store, you can go to <strong>Settings &gt; Personalization &gt; Themes<\/strong> and select a new theme. Alternatively, you can <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-in\/help\/12415\/windows-10-recovery-options#section1\">recover from the restore point<\/a> you created in the previous section to alter back all the system changes done by you.<\/p>\n<p>The second option is especially necessary if you wish to <strong>roll back all the changes<\/strong> made for applying the third-party theme. Let\u2019s say you wish to stick only to the default themes or remove the fonts or icon packs, then you must do it.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Display Widgets on Desktop<\/h2>\n<p>You must have remembered Desktop Gadgets (or Windows Sidebar) if you\u2019ve used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/history-of-windows\/\">Windows XP or Vista<\/a>. Unfortunately, they were removed in Windows 7, which was one of the reasons for me to hate Windows 7. Don\u2019t you too?<\/p>\n<p>In case you aren\u2019t aware, desktop gadgets or widgets in Windows are same as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/android-widget-packs\/\">home screen widgets in Android<\/a>. They\u2019re small pieces of software that run on your desktop and <strong>display live, useful information<\/strong>. For example, a weather widget may show weather info, a system widget may show storage info, etc.<\/p>\n<p>However; didn\u2019t I just said that Microsoft removed them starting from Windows 7? So how are we going to get them back in Windows 10? The answer: a free and open-source program known as Rainmeter. It\u2019s a desktop customization tool to <strong>display fully customizable and functional skins<\/strong> (widgets) on your desktop.<\/p>\n<p>But what\u2019s the catch? Since Rainmeter has a community of skin developers and enthusiasts, it\u2019s easy to search for and get new skins, i.e., new widgets. However, Rainmeter has a long learning curve. That\u2019s why, we\u2019ll install Win10 Widgets \u2014 <strong>a ready-made set of widgets<\/strong> built over Rainmeter. So let\u2019s get going:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/win10widgets.com\/\">Download Win10 Widgets<\/a> and install using the downloaded file.<\/li>\n<li>After installing it, just go to your desktop and you\u2019ll see the widgets as shown below. If not, then search for \u201cRainmeter\u201d and run it.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/truly-customizing-windows-10\/win10-widgets-desktop-windows-10.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"712\" alt=\"Win10 Widgets on the desktop in Windows 10\"><\/figure>\n<li>If you wish to configure any widget, right-click it, and click \u201c<strong>Manage skin<\/strong>\u201c. You can change its coordinates (its position on the desktop), set a level of transparency, enable click and drag events, choose monitor, etc.<\/li>\n<li>In case you need to add more widgets, you can right-click a widget, then go to \u201c<strong>Win10 Widgets<\/strong>\u201d <strong>&gt;<\/strong> choose a widget <strong>&gt;<\/strong> click on one of its sizes.<\/li>\n<li>If you wish to remove a widget, right-click it, and click \u201c<strong>Unload skin<\/strong>\u201c.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Of course, if you\u2019re unhappy with Win10 Widgets, you can try out other widget packs like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/8gadgetpack.net\/\">8GadgetPack<\/a> or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/p\/widgets-hd\/9wzdncrdqfbt?activetab=pivot:overviewtab\">Widgets HD<\/a>.
