Well, if you do want to install macOS on your computer, I would suggest you to do it via USB.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple of reasons why:<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can do it offline<\/strong> \u2013 Installing macOS via USB will allow you to do it offline meaning that you wouldn\u2019t need to wait for the re-downloading of the entire macOS installer, which could take a while depending on your internet speed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can do it faster<\/strong> \u2013 All it takes to reinstall macOS on a computer is to simply plug in the USB drive and get the mac to boot via external source (your thumb drive).<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can do it anytime you want<\/strong> \u2013 As long as you keep the USB drive bootable with the macOS installer in it, you can reformat and reinstall the macOS again anytime you want.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Prerequisites<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Before we get started, here are some prerequisites that you need to take into consideration. Make sure you\u2019ve got all of them as it will make the entire process much faster.<\/p>\n<h3>A thumb drive<\/h3>\n<p>A thumb drive, aka USB flash drive, is what you would need for this to work. I would suggest you to<strong> get the one with a capacity of 16 GB or higher<\/strong> to store the macOS installer file.<\/p>\n<h3>The required macOS version<\/h3>\n<p>Whether you want to reinstall the latest macOS Catalina, or you want to revert or downgrade to Mojave, or High Sierra, you will need to decide now as it dictates which installer file you will be downloading in a second.<\/p>\n<p>Ready? Let\u2019s get started.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 1. Download macOS installer file<\/h2>\n<p>Let\u2019s start with this first as the downloading of the macOS installer file may take a while.<\/p>\n<p>Click on the following links to choose which macOS\u2019s installer file you would like to download:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/sg\/app\/macos-catalina\/id1466841314?mt=12\">macOS Catalina<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/macos-mojave\/id1398502828?ls=1&mt=12\">macOS Mojave<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/macos-high-sierra\/id1246284741?ls=1&mt=12\">macOS High Sierra<\/a><\/li>\n<li>OS X El Capitan \u2013 Click <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-sg\/HT206886\">this link<\/a>, scroll down to to step 4 and click \u201cDownload OS X El Capitan\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> Clicking on any of the above links will launch the App Store, which brings you to the official download page of the specific macOS.<\/p>\n<p>Next, click <strong>Get<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Download<\/strong> to initiate downloading.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/create-bootable-macos-usb-stick\/mojave-download-via-itunes.jpg\" alt=\"mojave download via itunes\" width=\"1000\" height=\"564\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> Download will take around 10 minutes to a few hours, depending on your internet connection.<\/p>\n<p>While waiting for the download, let\u2019s move on to the next step \u2013 formatting your thumb drive.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2. Format your thumb drive<\/h2>\n<p>If you are using an existing thumb drive, make sure to backup all existing data inside as we are going to format the thumb drive, getting it ready and compatible for the bootable mac installer.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Plug the thumb drive into the USB port of your computer.<\/li>\n<li>Launch Spotlight (<span class=\"key\">Command<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">Space<\/span>), type in \u201c<strong>Disk Utility<\/strong>\u201d and hit <strong>Return<\/strong> to launch the app.<\/li>\n<li>Look for the name of your thumb drive under the \u201c<strong>External<\/strong>\u201d section on the sidebar of Disk Utility App.<\/li>\n<li>Click once to select your thumb drive, then click the \u201c<strong>Erase<\/strong>\u201d icon on the top.<\/li>\n<li>Give it a name, or just use \u201c<strong>Untitled<\/strong>\u201c, make sure the format is <strong>Mac OS External (Journaled)<\/strong>, then click the \u201c<strong>Erase<\/strong>\u201d button below.\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/create-bootable-macos-usb-stick\/erasing-thumbdrive-and-options.jpg\" alt=\"erasing thumbdrive options\" width=\"1000\" height=\"525\"><\/figure>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> The entire process will take around 5 minutes, depending on the capacity of your thumb drive.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 3. Make your thumb drive bootable<\/h2>\n<p>To proceed, you will need to <strong>ensure the downloading of the macOS installer (step 1) has completed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch Spotlight (<span class=\"key\">Command<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">Space<\/span>), type \u201c<strong>Terminal<\/strong>\u201d and hit return to launch Terminal app.<\/li>\n<li>Copy one of the command below that matches your criteria, replace <code>VOLUMN_NAME<\/code> to your thumb drive\u2019s new name and paste it inside Terminal.\n<h3>Catalina installer<\/h3>\n<pre>sudo \/Applications\/Install\\ macOS\\ Catalina.app\/Contents\/Resources\/createinstallmedia --volume \/Volumes\/VOLUMN_NAME<\/pre>\n<h3>Mojave installer<\/h3>\n<pre>sudo \/Applications\/Install\\ macOS\\ Mojave.app\/Contents\/Resources\/createinstallmedia --volume \/Volumes\/VOLUMN_NAME<\/pre>\n<h3>High Sierra installer<\/h3>\n<pre>sudo \/Applications\/Install\\ macOS\\ High\\ Sierra.app\/Contents\/Resources\/createinstallmedia --volume \/Volumes\/VOLUMN_NAME<\/pre>\n<h3>El Capitan<\/h3>\n<pre>sudo \/Applications\/Install\\ OS\\ X\\ El\\ Capitan.app\/Contents\/Resources\/createinstallmedia --volume \/Volumes\/VOLUMN_NAME --applicationpath \/Applications\/Install\\ OS\\ X\\ El\\ Capitan.app<\/pre>\n<h3>Example<\/h3>\n<p>If you are downloading <em>Mojave installer<\/em>, and your thumb drive\u2019s name is <em>Untitled<\/em>, your command would be the following. Take note of the changes in bold.<\/p>\n<pre>sudo \/Applications\/Install\\ macOS\\\u00a0<strong>Mojave.app<\/strong>\/Contents\/Resources\/createinstallmedia --volume \/Volumes\/<strong>Untitled<\/strong><\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Hit Return after confirming your command.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the administrator password and hit Return again.<\/li>\n<li>Type \u201cY\u201d, and hit Return to confirm erasing your thumb drive to begin the process of creating a bootable thumb drive.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/create-bootable-macos-usb-stick\/createinstallmedia-confirm.jpg\" alt=\"createinstallmed confirmation\" width=\"1000\" height=\"240\"><\/figure>\n<\/ol>\n<p>When you see \u201cInstall media now available at\u2026.\" in Terminal, that means the entire process is done.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/create-bootable-macos-usb-stick\/createinstallmedia-progress.jpg\" alt=\"createinstallmed progress\" width=\"1000\" height=\"298\"><\/figure>\n<p>You can then Eject your thumb drive and quit the Terminal app.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 4. Test your bootable thumb drive<\/h2>\n<p>If you have managed to follow through till this step, this means you have created a bootable thumb drive with macOS installer.
