Generate CSR<\/h2>\n<p>There are many ways to generate CSR, however, in this guide, I will walk you through generating CSR via cPanel and WHM, and we will start with the former.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#csr-whm\"><strong>Click here to skip to how to generate CSR with WHM.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"csr-cpanel\">Generate CSR via cPanel<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open a new browser window, go to the cPanel of your website, and login. Your cPanel URL should be either <em>cpanel.domain.com<\/em> or <em>domain.com\/cpanel<\/em>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/8-login-to-cpanel.jpg\" alt=\"logi to cpanel\" width=\"1500\" height=\"624\"><\/figure>\n<li>After logging in, look for <strong>Security<\/strong> and under this option click on <strong>SSL\/TLS<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/9-look-for-ssl-tls-security.jpg\" alt=\"ssl tls security\" width=\"1500\" height=\"759\"><\/figure>\n<li>The SSL\/TLS page will show different options. Here click <strong>\"Generate, view, or delete SSL certificate signing requests.\"<\/strong> to generate a new CSR.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/10-generate-csr-cpanel.jpg\" alt=\"generate csr cpanel\" width=\"1500\" height=\"850\"><\/figure>\n<li>On the next page, fill up all required information:<\/li>\n<\/ol><ul>\n<li>Key \u2013 Leave this to its default.<\/li>\n<li>Domain \u2013 Enter the domain name of website for which you want to install the SSL certificate.<\/li>\n<li>City, State, Country, and Company \u2013 Add all the respective information \u2013 these are compulsory. <\/li>\n<li>Company division, Email, Passphrase, and Description \u2013 Add this information if you want \u2013 these are optionals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now click <strong>Generate<\/strong> to get your CSR code.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/11-ssl-tls-fields.jpg\" alt=\"ssl tls fields\" width=\"1500\" height=\"2942\"><\/figure>\n<li id=\"encode-cer-cpanel\">After clicking the Generate button, you will be provided the following 4 sets of codes: <\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Encoded Certificate Signing Request. <\/li>\n<li>Decoded Certificate Signing Request <\/li>\n<li>Encoded Key.<\/li>\n<li>Decoded Key.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"note\">Keep this browser window open as we will be needing it in the later step.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/12-csr-codes-generated-cpanel.jpg\" alt=\"generated csr codes\" width=\"1500\" height=\"860\"><\/figure>\n<h3 id=\"csr-whm\">Generate CSR via WHM<\/h3>\n<p>If you are running your website from a dedicated server, chances are you will have access to WHM. Therefore you can also generate CSR via WHM.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#csr-cpanel\"><strong>Click here to learn how to generate CSR via cPanel.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open a new browser window and login to WHM.\n<p class=\"note\"><strong><em>Note:<\/em><\/strong> If you don\u2019t already know the URL to your WHM login, it would most likely be <strong>ipaddress\/whm<\/strong>, or <strong>domain.com\/whm<\/strong>. If these don\u2019t work, contact your web host.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/13-login-whm.jpg\" alt=\"login whm\" width=\"1500\" height=\"663\"><\/figure>\n<li>After logging in, look for <strong>\u201cGenerate an SSL Certificate and Signing Request\u201d<\/strong> under <strong>SSL\/TLS<\/strong> on the left panel.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/14-generate-csr-whm.jpg\" alt=\"generate csr whm\" width=\"1500\" height=\"809\"><\/figure>\n<li>First, check the box that says <strong>\u201cWhen complete, email me the certificate, key and CSR\u201d<\/strong> and then enter your email address to get a copy of the generated CSR later.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/15-email-me-when-complete.jpg\" alt=\"email when completed\" width=\"1242\" height=\"470\"><\/figure>\n<li>Next, fill up all the required information as follows: <\/li>\n<\/ol><ul>\n<li>Key Size \u2013 Leave it to its default. <\/li>\n<li>Domains \u2013 Enter the domain you will install your SSL certificate. <\/li>\n<li>City, State, Country, and Company \u2013 Add all the respective information \u2013 these are compulsory. <\/li>\n<li>Company Division, Email and Passphrase \u2013 these are optional. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once done, click the <strong>Create<\/strong> button.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/16-ssl-tls-fields-whm.jpg\" alt=\"ssl tls fields whm\" width=\"1500\" height=\"3142\"><\/figure>\n<li id=\"encode-cer-whm\">After clicking the Create button, you\u2019ll be given the following 3 sets of codes:<\/li>\n<ul>\n<li>Signing Request.<\/li>\n<li>Certificate.<\/li>\n<li>Key.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"note\">After these steps, keep this browser window open, you will need it in the later step.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/17-cert-generated-whm.jpg\" alt=\"generated cert whm\" width=\"1500\" height=\"2265\"><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"activate-cert\">3. Activate Certificate<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve reached this far, that means you\u2019ve either generated your CSR via <a href=\"#csr-cpanel\">cPanel<\/a> or <a href=\"#csr-whm\">WHM<\/a>. Now let\u2019s proceed to activating your SSL certificate.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Copy all codes from <a href=\"#encode-cer-cpanel\"><strong>Encoded Certificate Signing Request<\/strong> (cPanel)<\/a> or <a href=\"#encode-cer-whm\"><strong>Signing Request<\/strong> (WHM)<\/a> from the previous browser window into <strong>Enter CSR<\/strong>. The Primary domain will be auto-retrieved from your CSR. Once this is done, click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/18-activate-step-1.jpg\" alt=\"activate 1\/5\" width=\"1500\" height=\"958\"><\/figure>\n<li>Next, double-check to make sure the correct web hosting server is selected and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/19-activate-step2.jpg\" alt=\"activate 2\/5\" width=\"1500\" height=\"866\"><\/figure>\n<li>Now choose a method to verify your domain. Validate Certificate<\/h2>\n<p>Since we choose the email for DCV method, we\u2019ll be <strong>expecting an email<\/strong> asking us to verify that we are the owner of the domain we intend to install the SSL certificate. Here\u2019s how you can validate the SSL certificate via email.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Check your inbox for an email sent by the SSL provider. It should look something like the screenshot below.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/22-dcv-email.jpg\" alt=\"dcv email\" width=\"1500\" height=\"171\"><\/figure>\n<li>Go into that email and follow the instructions to verify your domain.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/23-dcv-email-validate.jpg\" alt=\"dcv email validate\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1605\"><\/figure>\n<h2 id=\"download-cert\">5. Download SSL Certificate<\/h2>\n<p>You will verify the certificate via email, you\u2019ll be sent the certificate to be downloaded. Here\u2019s how you can do it.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The emails you\u2019ll receive, of which one of them will contain the certificate, would look like the screenshot below.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/24-email-download-cert.jpg\" alt=\"email dowload cert\" width=\"1500\" height=\"198\"><\/figure>\n<li>You\u2019ll have to look for the email from SSL provider with an attachment in .zip format.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/25-cert-email-attachment.jpg\" alt=\"cert email attachment\" width=\"1500\" height=\"195\"><\/figure>\n<li id=\"crt-ext\">Download and extract the attachment. It should consists two text files; one <strong>ending with <em>.ca-bundle<\/em><\/strong> extension and the other <strong>ending with <em>.crt<\/em><\/strong>. Open them up in your preferred text editor.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/26-dowloaded-cert-files.jpg\" alt=\"download cert files\" width=\"1500\" height=\"806\"><\/figure>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 id=\"install-cert\">6. Install SSL Certificate<\/h2>\n<p>Before we go on to install the SSL certificate, let\u2019s do a recap. First we <a href=\"#purchase-cert\">purchased an SSL certificate<\/a>, <a href=\"#generate-csr\">generated  CSR<\/a> (via cPanel, or WHM) to <a href=\"#activate-cert\">activate the certificate<\/a>. Then we\u2019ve also <a href=\"#validate-cert\">validated<\/a>, <a href=\"#download-cert\">downloaded the certificate<\/a> and finally have it <strong>opened in a text editor<\/strong>. And now, we\u2019re going to install the certificate.<\/p>\n<p>We will start with the guide on how to install the certificate via cPanel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#install-whm\"><strong>Click here to skip to installing via WHM.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"install-cpanel\">Install Certificate via cPanel<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Back in cPanel, navigate to <strong>Security<\/strong> &gt; <strong>SSL\/TLS<\/strong> and click on <strong>\u201cManage SSL Sites\u201d<\/strong> under <strong>Install and Manage SSL for your site (HTTPS)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/setting-up-ssl-for-your-website\/27-cpanel-manage-ssl-sites.jpg\" alt=\"cpanel manage ssl sites\" width=\"1579\" height=\"1033\"><\/figure>\n<li>Information on this next page needs to be <strong>carefully and accurately entered<\/strong> to ensure successful installation of the SSL certificate.
