However, there are <strong>certain tasks Cortana cannot do<\/strong>. And so, I went on to find a way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/cortana-tips-tricks\/\">do more with Cortana<\/a> without waiting for Microsoft to add more commands.<\/p>\n<p>My goal was to extend the functionality of Cortana and fortunately, it allows to <strong>call or run any script or program<\/strong> installed on the computer, so that means I can create a batch or shell script or create my own program to do almost anything. Alright, let\u2019s get on with it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Read Also:<\/strong> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/windows-productivity-tips-tricks\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10 Windows 10 Tips to Boost Productivity<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>\u201cHey Cortana, open\u2026\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>I usually say \u201cHey <em>Cortana, open Chrome<\/em>\u201d to open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/google-chrome-59-whats-new\/\">Google Chrome<\/a>, and this is the same command that came to my rescue in this situation. I figured out it can not just open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/handy-windows-built-in-tools\/\">system tools<\/a> (like Task Scheduler) or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/free-windows-tools\/\">installed programs<\/a> (like Google Chrome), but can <strong>run any shortcut present in the Start menu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That means, such a shortcut can point to any program or script \u2014 even custom ones.<\/p>\n<h3>How to create custom shortcut in Start menu<\/h3>\n<p>As any shortcut in the Start menu can be executed by Cortana, so here\u2019s how you can create it:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press <span class=\"key\">Win<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">R<\/span> keys to open the Run window.<\/li>\n<li>Type <code>shell:programs<\/code> in the window, then click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/make-cortana-do-custom-chores-in-windows-10\/open-run-window.jpg\" width=\"399\" height=\"206\" alt=\"Open Run window\"><\/figure>\n<li>File Explorer will open showing <strong>\u201cStart Menu &gt; Programs\u201d<\/strong> folder.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on an empty area <strong>&gt;<\/strong> choose <strong>New<\/strong> and select <strong>Shortcut<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/make-cortana-do-custom-chores-in-windows-10\/choose-new-shortcut.jpg\" width=\"848\" height=\"739\" alt=\"Choose New > Shortcut\u201d\/><\/figure>\n<li>A <strong>Create Shortcut<\/strong> window will show up where you need to give details.<\/li>\n<li>In \u2018Type the location of the item\u2019 textbox, you need to <strong>enter a command or the path<\/strong> of a program or script you wish to run. You can also click the <strong>Browse<\/strong> button and choose the program or script file interactively.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\" lazy><\/figure>\n<li>When you are done entering the path, just click the <strong>Next<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<li>Now you need to <strong>give a name to your shortcut<\/strong>. I will suggest to keep it meaningful and speakable because this will be the command you must say to Cortana to run your custom task. For example, if I give \u2018Sesame\u2019 as the name of my shortcut, then I need to say \u201c<em>Hey Cortana, open Sesame<\/em>\u201c.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/make-cortana-do-custom-chores-in-windows-10\/enter-name-shortcut.jpg\" width=\"1186\" height=\"775\" alt=\"Enter name for the shortcut\"><\/figure>\n<h3>How to place custom shortcut in Start menu<\/h3>\n<p>We can also place a shortcut in Start menu, if we already have one. Although this method does not work for commands but we can <strong>create shortcuts for programs or scripts easy way<\/strong> and then place that shortcut in the Start menu.<\/p>\n<p>Follow the below steps to quick-create as well as place a shortcut:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Right-click any program<\/strong> or script you wish to create shortcut for.<\/li>\n<li>You will see the context menu <strong>&gt;<\/strong> choose \u2018<strong>Create shortcut<\/strong>\u2018 option.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/make-cortana-do-custom-chores-in-windows-10\/create-shortcut-program-script.jpg\" width=\"741\" height=\"758\" alt=\"Create shortcut of program or script\"><\/figure>\n<li>Now you will see a new shortcut along with the program or script.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click the shortcut, choose \u2018<strong>Rename<\/strong>\u2018 from the option list.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/make-cortana-do-custom-chores-in-windows-10\/rename-shortcut-file.jpg\" width=\"655\" height=\"535\" alt=\"Rename the shortcut file\"><\/figure>\n<li>Type in a purposeful and <strong>speakable name<\/strong> for the shortcut. This will be the name you will use to tell Cortana to execute it. For example, if you name it \u2018Secret\u2019, then you must say \u201c<em>Hey Cortana, open Secret<\/em>\u201d to run it.<\/li>\n<li>Now press the <span class=\"key\">Win<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">R<\/span> keys and you will see the Run window.<\/li>\n<li>Enter <code>shell:programs<\/code> in the window and click the <strong>OK<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/make-cortana-do-custom-chores-in-windows-10\/type-run-window.jpg\" width=\"399\" height=\"206\" alt=\"Type in Run window\"><\/figure>\n<li>You will see the File Explorer with \u201cStart Menu &gt; Programs\u201d folder.<\/li>\n<li>Now cut the shortcut created in step #2 and paste it in this folder.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/make-cortana-do-custom-chores-in-windows-10\/paste-shortcut-programs.jpg\" width=\"1200\" height=\"565\" alt=\"Paste shortcut in Programs\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Custom Tasks<\/h2>\n<h3>Run a command \/ program<\/h3>\n<p>If you wish to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/web-designers-essential-command-lines\/\">run a command<\/a> or a command-line program (say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/internal\/ccleaner\">CCleaner<\/a>) by just speaking to Cortana, then you can use this method. Follow the aforementioned steps under \u2018Create a shortcut in Start menu\u2019 and <strong>while doing its step #6<\/strong>, enter the full command in the \u2018Type the location of the item\u2019 field.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you need to create a shortcut to hibernate your computer, then you need to give the following command <code>shutdown \/h<\/code> in step #6. Also, if you name the shortcut as \u201chibernate me\u201d, then whenever you need to hibernate, you can just speak \u201c<em>Hey Cortana, open <\/em><strong><em>hibernate me<\/em><\/strong>\u201d to Cortana.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/make-cortana-do-custom-chores-in-windows-10\/create-shortcut-hibernate.jpg\" width=\"767\" height=\"567\" alt=\"Create shortcut to hibernate\"><\/figure>\n<p>Moreover, let\u2019s say you need to clean your computer using CCleaner, then you can use its command-line options to ease the cleaning process. However, in the flow of daily life, we...\t\t\t\t\t\t<span>Read more<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Run a batch script<\/h3>\n<p>A batch script is a <strong>file with multiple commands<\/strong> that get executed by Windows Command Prompt. If you wish to run multiple commands, then you must create a batch script file (with .bat extension). For that, follow the steps in <strong>\u2018Place a shortcut in Start menu\u2019<\/strong> tutorial from above to place that file\u2019s shortcut in Start menu.<\/p>\n<h3>Run a Bash shell script<\/h3>\n<p>A shell script is a <strong>file with multiple commands<\/strong>, like a batch script. Although a shell script (with .sh extension) is known to run on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/most-asked-questions-linux\/\">Linux\/Unix<\/a> distributions but with the arrival of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/bash-ubuntu-windows-10\/\">Bash on Ubuntu in Windows 10<\/a>, fortunately, it is now <strong>possible to run shell commands or scripts directly on Windows<\/strong> as well. In fact, it is one of my favorite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/windows-10-features\/\">features of Windows 10<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike batch scripts, shell scripts do not execute directly by just opening, so we cannot use the same method as with batch script. After you create a shell script, <strong>follow the steps under \u2018Create a shortcut in Start menu\u2019<\/strong> and under its step #6, enter this command <code>bash '\/mnt\/SCRIPT-PATH'<\/code>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/make-cortana-do-custom-chores-in-windows-10\/create-shortcut-run-shell-script.jpg\" width=\"767\" height=\"567\" alt=\"Create shortcut to run shell script\"><\/figure>\n<p>In place of SCRIPT-PATH, you must enter the <strong>script\u2019s path in Linux\/Unix style<\/strong>. For example, a file named \u2018my_script.sh\u2019 on my desktop has the following path in this style: <code>\/mnt\/c\/Users\/aksinghnet\/Desktop\/my_script.sh<\/code>.<\/p>\n<h3>Run a PowerShell command<\/h3>\n<p>PowerShell is the new, more powerful shell than Command Prompt in Windows. It brings in a lot <strong>more commands and scripting functionalities<\/strong> than the older prompt, and thus, it can help you do a lot more things in your system.<\/p>\n<p>In order to create a shortcut for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/windows-powershell-commands\/\">PowerShell command<\/a>, you must use the steps given above under \u2018Run a command or program\u2019. Again, in the step #6, you must <strong>enter the PowerShell command that you want to execute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/make-cortana-do-custom-chores-in-windows-10\/create-shortcut-run-powershell-command.jpg\" width=\"767\" height=\"567\" alt=\"Create shortcut to run PowerShell command\"><\/figure>\n<p>Moreover, you must write your <strong>command in following format<\/strong>: <code>PowerShell -Command \"& { COMMAND-HERE }\"<\/code>. For example, if you wish to disconnect and then again connect the Wi-Fi to a network named \u201cFastWifi\u201d, then you must use the command <code>PowerShell -Command \"& { netsh wlan disconnect ; netsh wlan connect name=FastWifi }\"<\/code> while creating a shortcut.<\/p>\n<h3>Run a PowerShell script<\/h3>\n<p>PowerShell can also run scripts (with .ps1 extension) having a bunch of its commands. It is more helpful for automating a handful of tasks (even complex ones) and I find it has <strong>more powerful scripting<\/strong> than batch scripts.<\/p>\n<p>If you need to create a shortcut for running a PowerShell script, then you have to follow the same procedure as given above under \u2018Run a PowerShell command\u2019 but you must keep the <strong>command in format<\/strong>: <code>PowerShell -File FILE-PATH<\/code>.
