Ever wonder how these guys draw their Web 2.0 Logos? Sometimes it\u2019s nice to learn from others, build up the basic skills and start your own creativity from there. In this Photoshop tutorial, I\u2019m going to reveal you some of the nice Web 2.0 logos, how you can draw their logo exactly the same (well, not really 100%, though) with Photoshop.<\/p>\n

1. Download and Install style file<\/h2>\n

First of all, you will need to download a style I\u2019ve created and load it into Photoshop.<\/p>\n

  1. Download Photoshop style here.<\/a> (Right-click -> Save as)<\/li>\n
  2. For Photoshop users, put this style file into Program Files\\Adobe\\Adobe Photoshop\\Presets\\Styles<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    2. Load style<\/h2>\n

    Call up your Style Dialog box in Photoshop<\/p>\n

    1. Windows<\/strong> > Styles<\/strong><\/li>\n
    2. Notice a small arrow button on the top right corner. Click on it and select Load Styles<\/strong> from the drop down<\/li>\n
    3. Find web20<\/strong> from the list and click Load<\/strong>. If you don\u2019t find web20, try closing Photoshop, re-open it repeat Step 1.<\/li>\n
    4. Click on the arrow button again and select Large List<\/strong> from drop down<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Your result should look something similar to the image below.<\/p>\n

      3. The six Web 2.0 Logos<\/h2>\n

      Here are six Web 2.0 Logos; MyBlogLog, Imified, mixd, skype, Linked In, and Go2Web20. The style you\u2019ve just installed is going to reveal how to draw them. I\u2019ll go through \u201cmixd<\/strong>\u201d and \u201cGo2Web20<\/strong>\u201d logos, the rest is just reusing the same technique.<\/p>\n

      4. How to draw<\/h2>\n

      The reason I use Style here is that once they are saved into a .asl file (the file you downloaded), they are convenient to apply. Let\u2019s go about drawing some of these logos.<\/p>\n

      Drawing mixd Logo<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Initial observation, mixd logo consist of<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. \u201cmixd\u201d text<\/li>\n
      2. rounded rectangular<\/li>\n
      3. small dot<\/li>\n
      4. smaller dot<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        We will roughly draw them out in Photoshop, each element in a different layer, as illustrated in the image below.<\/p>\n

        Now, here\u2019s the trick. Look for \u201cmixd-label\u201d in the Style Dialog<\/strong>. Drag them directly to the background layer, small dot layer, and smaller dot layer, respectively. If you drag them correctly, you will notice that the layer will now inherit the colors and blending of the style. Find \u201cmixd-font\u201d in Style Dialog<\/strong>, drag it to the text layer, and your mixd logo is complete, 90% like the original, I\u2019ll say.<\/p>\n

        Have 4 new layers created, each for \u201cGO<\/strong>\u201c, \u201c2<\/strong>\u201c, \u201cWEB<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c2.0<\/strong>\u201c<\/p>\n

        Drag \u201cgo2web20-purple\u201d from Style Dialog into \u201cGO\u201d & \u201cWEB\u201d, drag \u201cgo2web20-green\u201d into \u201c2\u201d & \u201c2.0\u201d and you will get this final output.<\/p>\n

        As for the rest (MyBlogLog, imified, skype and Linked In), it\u2019s all about dragging their respective style in and match with the correct font.<\/p>\n

        5. Conclusion<\/h2>\n

        If you look into the Blending Options<\/strong> of each style, you will be noticed that most Web 2.0 logos are a matter of playing with gradients and strokes with the combination of the right fonts. This may not the \u201cexact\u201d way how these guys had done their logo, but it\u2019s at least a way to achieve it. I\u2019m not encouraging you to fake their style and redraw your logo, but try to understand it, and hopefully, you can come out with a nice sleek Web 2.0 logo.
