But, why design something from scratch when you can use a JS library<\/strong>? I have collected the best free JavaScript-powered modal scripts<\/strong> here for you to peruse and single out your favorites.<\/p>\n

All of these are completely free and open-source<\/strong>, so you can edit the code and restyle them to fit your site as needed.<\/p>\n

1. Tingle<\/a><\/h2>\n
\"Tingle.js<\/a><\/figure>\n

One of my favorite free modal scripts is Tingle.js<\/a><\/strong>. It\u2019s built on vanilla JavaScript with no dependencies<\/strong>, so you don\u2019t need any jQuery or Zepto libraries.<\/p>\n

Plus, it\u2019s a fairly small library, although it does have a lot of options for customization<\/strong>. You can change the CSS transitions, the JavaScript modal animations, and the whole user experience with just a few settings.<\/p>\n

Tingle.js is designed to be fully accessible and responsive<\/strong>, so it works on mobile devices and supports older browsers, too.<\/p>\n

You can see all the documentation on GitHub<\/a><\/strong>, along with the free source code. They also have a demo link, so you can check out Tingle in action<\/strong> to see if it could fit on your website.<\/p>\n

2. Vanilla Modal<\/a><\/h2>\n

Here\u2019s a modal I just found recently and it\u2019s a whole lot simpler than most<\/strong>. Vanilla Modal<\/a><\/strong> stands true to its name with a pure vanilla script<\/strong> powering the modal, along with CSS transitions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This thing is pretty small and super flexible, with custom CSS to restyle the windows<\/strong>. It also has quite a few options you can alter with JavaScript<\/strong>, making it perfect for running DOM functions or even callback functions.<\/p>\n

Take a peek at the demo page<\/a><\/strong> to see the default style. It\u2019s a really basic design, so it\u2019ll require customizations to use it on a production site<\/strong>. But this also cuts down on the total code requirements, so it\u2019s one of the slimmest JavaScript modal libraries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

3. plainModal<\/a><\/h2>\n
\"plainModal<\/a><\/figure>\n

If you want a really simple script I highly recommend plainModal<\/a><\/strong>. It is built on jQuery<\/strong>, but it\u2019s one of the smallest modal scripts available<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It does not use any external CSS or image files<\/strong>. Just one single JS script is all you need.<\/p>\n

Once the plainModal script is added to your page, you just target the modal button<\/strong> and you\u2019re good to go. This grants you control over the display and how much you want to alter the modal interface.<\/p>\n

Plus, you can set up the modal with one line of JavaScript<\/strong> keeping with the minimalist theme of this plugin.<\/p>\n

4. Modaal<\/a><\/h2>\n

There\u2019s no denying accessibility is huge<\/a> on the web<\/strong>. Every designer\u2019s goal should be a more inclusive experience<\/strong> for people around the world on various devices & with possible limitations.<\/p>\n

With Modaal<\/a><\/strong>, you get that perfect experience which passes the WCAG 2.0 test with a solid AA accessibility rating<\/strong>. You can see a fantastic example on the main page<\/a>, along with some code documentation.<\/p>\n

Overall, I recommend this vanilla JavaScript plugin for anyone who really cares about accessibility<\/strong>. The AA rating can be required on some web projects, so Modaal is a really handy script to keep bookmarked.<\/p>\n

5. Scotch JS Modal<\/a><\/h2>\n
\"Custom<\/a><\/figure>\n

The development team at Scotch.io<\/a> publish tutorials and guides for coders. Their work is incredible and it really shows in this JavaScript modal script<\/a>, hosted on the Scotch GitHub<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The modal was developed by Ken Wheeler and this script even has a full tutorial<\/a><\/strong> if you want to learn how it works. However, the free code should be enough for most developers since this is super lightweight and easy to set up<\/strong>. No dependencies, and even a sample demo<\/a> on CodePen.<\/p>\n

6. Bootbox.js<\/a><\/h2>\n

The fastest way to launch a new web project<\/strong> is through Bootstrap<\/a>. It\u2019s a powerful frontend framework that encourages developers to create their own add-ons<\/a> to the library<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

One such example is Bootbox.js<\/a><\/strong>, a small JavaScript library, designed solely for modal windows in Bootstrap<\/strong>. It actually works on dialog boxes<\/strong> where the user can click OK or cancel, based on your request.<\/p>\n

Typical JavaScript dialogs are awful, just like alert boxes. The Bootbox script offers a solid alternative for anyone working in the BS3\/BS4 ecosystem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Again, it\u2019s totally free and open-source<\/strong>, along with a lengthy documentation page<\/a><\/strong> to get you up & running fast.<\/p>\n

7. iziModal.js<\/a><\/h2>\n

If you need a solution a little more customized<\/strong> check out iziModal.js<\/a><\/strong>. This tool is fully responsive<\/strong> and designed to work in all modern browsers perfectly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve yet to find another modal script that offers such an aesthetically pleasing design. It comes out the gate with a gorgeous UI that can blend into practically any website<\/strong>. However, you can also restyle the design<\/strong> to suit your needs.<\/p>\n

Just note this plugin does run on jQuery<\/strong>, so it\u2019s one of the few here that has a dependency<\/strong>. But, if you want the iziModal styles it\u2019s a small price to pay for such sleek popover windows.<\/p>\n

8. jQuery Modal<\/a><\/h2>\n
\"jQuery<\/a><\/figure>\n

The jQuery Modal plugin<\/a><\/strong> is perhaps the simplest modal script on jQuery you\u2019ll ever find<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It can be programmed to automatically bind with certain HTML elements<\/strong> based on various attributes. It also supports keyboard shortcuts<\/strong> such as ESC<\/span> for closing the window.<\/p>\n

In total, this plugin measures less than 1KB<\/strong> and it works in every possible browser you can imagine<\/strong>. jQuery developers should keep this plugin saved for quick access to a simple modal script without the extra frills.<\/p>\n

9. PicoModal<\/a><\/h2>\n
\"PicoModal<\/a><\/figure>\n

Getting back towards vanilla JavaScript, we have the PicoModal library<\/a><\/strong>. This is probably one of the smallest scripts you\u2019ll find and it\u2019s designed to run perfectly on a vanilla JavaScript backbone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It supports all modern browsers<\/strong>, including mobile browsers for Android and Mobile Safari for iOS. It even supports older IE browsers, dating back to IE7!<\/p>\n

PicoModal\u2019s developer created a small JSfiddle script<\/a><\/strong> to demonstrate how it works. This is a very small example and it\u2019s not tied to a click event or anything else<\/strong>, but it\u2019s not hard to script in a few toggle buttons<\/strong> to run this modal window properly.<\/p>\n

10. Avgrund<\/a><\/h2>\n
\"Avgrund<\/a><\/figure>\n

Avgrund<\/a><\/strong> is probably one of the most unique modals in this list. It uses a custom page fading effect, along with a shrinking animation<\/strong> to bring the modal right into view.<\/p>\n

Not everyone will appreciate this animation, so I can\u2019t say this script would fit every website. But, it is a pure vanilla modal<\/strong> and it\u2019s super easy to set up, with just a CSS and a JavaScript fil<\/strong>e.<\/p>\n
