There is also a chance that the owner of the video may have personally transcribed the video and made it available for the readers.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the case is, you can <strong>easily access the transcript<\/strong> and copy it along with timestamps.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to do it:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click on the <strong>More<\/strong> button below the video and select <strong>Transcript<\/strong> from the menu.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/three-ways-transcribe-youtube-videos\/youtube-transcript.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"449\" alt=\"youtube transcript\"><\/figure>\n<li>Below you\u2019ll be asked to select a language. Make your choice and you\u2019ll see a <strong>full transcript along with timestamps<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Now <strong>click and drag to highlight all the text<\/strong> and press <span class=\"key\">Ctrl<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">C<\/span> to copy the text. You can paste this text anywhere and your transcript will be ready. <\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/three-ways-transcribe-youtube-videos\/copy-transcript.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"536\" alt=\"copy transcript\"><\/figure>\n<\/ol>\n<p>YouTube <strong>automatically highlights words that it might have picked wrong<\/strong> which makes it easy to edit the transcript. Just click on the <strong>CC<\/strong> button in the YouTube player to <strong>enable subtitles<\/strong> and you will see the subtitles in white.<\/p>\n<p>However, the <strong>subtitles with gray color are the ones that might have some mistakes<\/strong>. You can see this to easily amend the transcription. Although do keep in mind that subtitles uploaded by the video owner will not have gray words.<\/p>\n<h2>Method #2 Transcribe with Google Doc<\/h2>\n<p>The above two methods work fine when an automatic or owner-uploaded transcript of the YouTube video is available. However, if you want to transcribe a video <strong>without an available transcript<\/strong>, then you can use the Google Docs\u2019 <strong>built-in voice typing feature<\/strong> to listen to the video audio and automatically type everything.<\/p>\n<p>In order to have a good quality transcript, it is recommended to make the PC <strong>directly listen to the audio coming out of its speakers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is how to do it:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In Windows, right-click on the sound icon in the taskbar and select <strong>Recording devices<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/three-ways-transcribe-youtube-videos\/recording-devices.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"515\" alt=\"recording devices\"><\/figure>\n<li>Now select \"<strong>Stereo Mix<\/strong>\" from the list and click<strong> \"Set Default\" <\/strong>to set it as default source of recording.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In case <strong>Stereo Mix<\/strong> option isn\u2019t supported by your PC\u2019s sound card (like mine), then you can <strong>download and install<\/strong> the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vb-audio.com\/\"><strong>VB Virtual Audio Cable<\/strong><\/a> tool and get an alternative option in the same menu.<\/p>\n<p>After installing the drivers of the tool, you should see a<strong> \"<\/strong><strong>Cable Output<\/strong>\" option in the same sound options. Select this option and then click \" <strong>Set Default<\/strong>\".<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/three-ways-transcribe-youtube-videos\/enable-cable-output.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"472\" alt=\"enable cable output\"><\/figure>\n<p>After this, your <strong>PC will listen to the audio coming out of the speakers<\/strong> for recording purposes. Now you just need to start Google Docs Voice typing and the required video simultaneously to start the transcription.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to do it:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Open Google Docs in Chrome<\/strong> or any other Chromium based browsers (Voice Typing isn\u2019t supported in non-Chromium browsers).<\/li>\n<li>Now create a new document and select<strong>\"Voice typing\" <\/strong>from the <strong>Tools<\/strong> menu on top.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/three-ways-transcribe-youtube-videos\/google-docs-voice-typing.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"397\" alt=\"google docs voice typing\"><\/figure>\n<li>A tiny box will show up with a microphone icon in the middle. <strong>Click on it to start recording<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Move to the YouTube video tab and <strong>play the video<\/strong>. Google Docs Voice typing also has <strong>support for over 40 languages<\/strong>, you can click on the Voice typing box menu to change the language.<\/p>\n<p>The resulted transcript should be as good as YouTube\u2019s own automatic captioning service as both use the same Speech Recognition technology.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion and suggestions<\/h2>\n<p>I like watching YouTube videos with captions turned on, and I can confirm that <strong>YouTube automatic captions is really good<\/strong> and makes very little mistakes. Even videos with minor background noise are transcripted with great accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, if you don\u2019t want to make edits in your transcription or correct punctuations, then you can always pay a professional to do it for you.
