UX designers bicker over the use of hamburger menus<\/a><\/strong> in web design. They serve a purpose for mobile users<\/strong> but also have lower discoverability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t say if they\u2019re worth using on your website or not, but if you\u2019re looking for an easy way to set up a sliding menu<\/strong> then the Slidebars Framework<\/a><\/strong> is a handy resource.<\/p>\n

Slidebars is totally free and open-source, built on top of the jQuery library<\/strong>. It works just like you\u2019d expect where you click a hamburger icon to open a sliding menu and it pushes the screen off-canvas<\/strong> to make room.<\/p>\n

\"Slidebars<\/a><\/figure>\n

One feature I especially like is the tap-to-hide setup<\/strong> where you can tap anywhere on the page to immediately hide the menu<\/strong>. This isn\u2019t built into every sliding menu plugin but it\u2019s a feature that greatly improves the user experience<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This plugin is totally open-sourced and the code is available for free on GitHub<\/a><\/strong> if you wanna poke around. However, the repo is missing a clear set of documentation which makes setup tougher.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, you can find this on the main site<\/a> with full usage guides<\/strong> for getting Slidebars up & running fast.<\/p>\n

\"Slidebars<\/a><\/figure>\n

It supports sliding menus from all four sides of the screen<\/strong>, along with custom features<\/strong> for animation effects, color choices, and total width\/height of the menu.<\/p>\n

The entire sliding menu works on an off-page element<\/strong>, so you need to set up the off-canvas menu<\/a> properly<\/strong>. This includes both proper HTML and the proper CSS for styling.<\/p>\n

All of this is detailed thoroughly in the documentation, so if you follow the pages step-by-step you should get it working just fine. And, the default setup doesn\u2019t require any custom properties<\/strong>, so if you just follow the basic steps you\u2019ll have no trouble.<\/p>\n

Slidebars really is a full framework<\/strong> and it even has a custom API<\/a><\/strong> you can work over. It allows you to call jQuery functions<\/strong> to add features or customize default functionality. An excellent choice for developers who need a sliding menu but don\u2019t want to create one from scratch.<\/p>\n
