The blogging platform Medium<\/a> uses a custom image zooming effect<\/strong> on their blog pages. Whenever the user clicks an image it\u2019ll automatically zoom into a larger size.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a great effect and certainly unique to Medium, but it was never something that could easily be copied.<\/p>\n

Now, with the MediumLightbox<\/a><\/strong> script, it\u2019s easier than ever. This JS script is lightweight and easy to add into any website or blog.<\/p>\n

He spent a while nailing down the exact transition and custom animation effect to create a mirror image of Medium\u2019s image zoom<\/strong>. The entire library is written in pure JavaScript<\/strong>, so it doesn\u2019t rely on any 3rd<\/sup> party scripts such as jQuery.<\/p>\n

You will need to know a little JS to set it up but you certainly don\u2019t need to be an expert.<\/p>\n

Each image can take data-* attributes<\/a><\/strong> for setting the full-sized height & width, all of which are pulled dynamically<\/strong> from the lightbox plugin. The setup code is very simple and it can target the images themselves<\/strong>, or containers like the <figure><\/code> element<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the single code snippet you need to get the plugin running:<\/p>\n

Inside the function, you\u2019ll pass a selector<\/strong> for all elements (e.g. <figure><\/code>) with the .zoom-effect<\/code> class. This class is specifically defined<\/strong> in the MediumLightbox stylesheet, so it\u2019s the best to use this on your page, too.<\/p>\n
And, once that\u2019s set up, you\u2019re all set!<\/p>\n

In your page content area, you can wrap all images into a <figure><\/code> tag using this class. They\u2019ll automatically get this beloved Medium click-to-zoom effect for both desktop and mobile users<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
