In simple terms, it is a free service that helps you manage banner ads. It also includes a comprehensive inventory report module. <strong>Ad Manager integrates with AdSense<\/strong>, allowing webmasters to serve AdSense ads if there\u2019s no banner for a particular slot. Here are some advantages of using <strong>Google Ad Manager<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ad Targeting ability<\/strong>. You can control who sees the ads based on geographical location, browser type, or language preference.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Efficient ad serving<\/strong>. No script installation is required. Everything, including the creatives, is hosted by Google. This saves space and bandwidth and ensures that banners are delivered quickly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multi-user support<\/strong>. You can assign multiple salespersons to handle sales, with all activities documented and recorded within Google Ad Manager.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Simple User Interface<\/strong>. Full guide after the jump.<\/p>\n<h2>Create <em>Ad Slots<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Ad Slots<\/strong> are the reserved spaces on your site for ad placements. If you want to insert four 125\u00d7125 banners on your sidebar, you need to create four ad slots. At hongkiat.com, we have eight 125\u00d7125 image banners. This means we\u2019ll need to create eight different ad slots. Let\u2019s get started.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Under <strong><em>Inventory<\/em><\/strong> -&gt; <strong><em>Ad Slots<\/em><\/strong>, click on <strong><em>New Ad Slots<\/em><\/strong>. <\/li>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/google-ad-manager\/create-new-ad-slots.jpg\" alt=\"Create new ad slots screen\"><\/figure>\n<li><strong>Compulsory fields<\/strong>: Give your slot a unique <strong><em>Ad slot name<\/em><\/strong>. Select the <strong><em>banner size<\/em><\/strong> from the drop-down menu, or create a custom size if needed. Choose whether the banner should open in a new window (<em>_blank<\/em>) or in the current window (<em>_top<\/em>) upon click.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optional fields<\/strong>: Check the <em>AdSense checkbox<\/em> if you want to maximize revenue on the slot with AdSense, but we recommend not doing this for now. Provide a meaningful <em>description<\/em> for the Ad Slot, or skip this if your <em>Ad slot name<\/em> is descriptive enough.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Save<\/em><\/strong> it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 to create all the ad slots you need. In our case, we will create eight ad slots with different names. Here\u2019s how one of them looks.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/google-ad-manager\/ad-slots-sample.jpg\" alt=\"Ad slot sample\" width=\"500\" height=\"399\"><\/figure>\n<p>Once you have created all your ad slots, here\u2019s how your <strong>Inventory page<\/strong> will look. Next, we will create <strong>ad placements<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/google-ad-manager\/inventory-page-summary.jpg\" alt=\"Inventory page summary\" width=\"500\" height=\"297\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Create <em>Ad Placements<\/em><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Ad Placements<\/strong> group your ad slots together. For hongkiat.com, since we have eight 125\u00d7125 banners on the sidebar, we\u2019ll need one ad placement to hold them together. Ad placements also ensure each ad gets a fair chance of being in the top position if you set them to rotate. Here\u2019s how you create an ad placement.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Under <strong><em>Inventory<\/em><\/strong> -&gt; <strong><em>Placements<\/em><\/strong>, click on <strong><em>New Placement<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compulsory fields<\/strong>: Give your ad placement a meaningful <em><strong>name<\/strong><\/em>. For example, we named ours \"<em>HKC-125-RightTop-Zone<\/em>\" because it will store all 125\u00d7125 banners positioned at the top right corner of the blog.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optional fields<\/strong>: If you allow AdSense to bid for ad slots in this placement, check <em><strong>Targeting<\/strong><\/em>, otherwise, uncheck it. The <em><strong>Internal Description<\/strong><\/em> is for personal use only, helping you understand your ad placements better.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Add<\/strong><\/em> all ad slots that belong to this new ad placement you\u2019ve created. In our case, we added all.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Save<\/strong><\/em> it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here\u2019s a sample of how our <strong>Ad Placement<\/strong> settings look.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/google-ad-manager\/new-ad-placement.jpg\" alt=\"New ad placement settings\" width=\"500\" height=\"365\"><\/figure>\n<p>Once you save your ad placement, you\u2019ll return to the <em><strong>Inventory<\/strong><\/em> -&gt; <em><strong>Placements<\/strong><\/em> main page, which looks like this.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/google-ad-manager\/inventory-placement-page.jpg\" alt=\"Inventory placement page\" width=\"500\" height=\"200\"><\/figure>\n<p>Here\u2019s a quick summary: You\u2019ve created the necessary <strong>Ad Slots<\/strong> and grouped them under an <strong>Ad Placement<\/strong>. The next step is to add \u201creal\u201d banners into each of these ad slots.<\/p>\n<h2>Create <em>Orders<\/em><\/h2>\n<h3>Orders<\/h3>\n<p>Think of <strong>Orders<\/strong> as banner order requests. They store information about who the advertisers are, the start and end dates of the ad campaigns, and more. When an advertiser places an order for a banner ad on your website, you create a new <strong>Order<\/strong>. If you have eight Ad Slots, expect to create up to eight different Orders. Makes sense? Let\u2019s create some Orders.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Under <strong><em>Orders<\/em><\/strong>, click on <strong><em>New Order<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compulsory fields<\/strong>: Give each order a <em><strong>Order name<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>External ID<\/strong><\/em> that you can easily recognize. Specify when the banner will start and end by choosing the <em><strong>Start date<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>End date<\/strong><\/em>. Choose <em>unlimited<\/em> if it\u2019s likely to be permanent.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Optional fields<\/strong>: You might also want to fill out the <em><strong>Advertiser<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Agency<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Contacts<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>User Assignments<\/strong><\/em>, and <em><strong>Notes<\/strong><\/em> to help you understand the Order better.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Save<\/strong><\/em> it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now we\u2019ll create a <strong>Line Item<\/strong> for this order.<\/p>\n<h3>Line Items<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Line Items<\/strong> are associated with <strong>Orders<\/strong>. Every time an Order is entered, you\u2019ll need to create a Line Item for it. Line items allow you to determine the nature of the ad, whether it\u2019s serving as CPC, CPM, or CPD. You also set the cost\/price for the ad here.<\/p>\n<p>Every time you hit the <em><strong>Save<\/strong><\/em> button after creating an <strong>Order<\/strong>, you\u2019ll be directed to create a <em>Line Item<\/em>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Click <em><strong>New line items<\/strong><\/em>. <\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/google-ad-manager\/create-new-line-item.jpg\" alt=\"Create new line item\" width=\"500\" height=\"173\"><\/figure>\n<li>Give it a <em><strong>Name<\/strong><\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Determine the <em><strong>Delivery Priority<\/strong><\/em>. If your order is a direct ad, change to <em><strong>Exclusive<\/strong><\/em> from the drop-down box so you can use CPD (Cost per Day).<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you\u2019ve correctly entered the <em><strong>Start date<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>End date<\/strong><\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Under the <em><strong>Placement<\/strong><\/em> section, associate the <strong>Line Item<\/strong> with its respective placement.<\/li>\n<li>The <em><strong>Targeting<\/strong><\/em> section allows you to control who should see the ad. In other words, under what conditions the ad will appear on your website. This setting is optional; by default, the ad will be visible to all.<\/li>\n<li>The <em><strong>Delivery Options<\/strong><\/em> section determines the appearance of the ad. Setting the <em><strong>Delivery rate<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Creative rotation<\/strong><\/em> to <em>Even<\/em> will ensure all your orders get equal impressions.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Save<\/strong><\/em> it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Here\u2019s how your line item will look.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/google-ad-manager\/new-line-item.jpg\" alt=\"New line item settings\" width=\"500\" height=\"634\"><\/figure>\n<p>A quick recap before we continue: We\u2019ve created an <strong>Order<\/strong> with advertiser information and campaign start and end dates. Then we created a <strong>Line Item<\/strong> for the <strong>Order<\/strong> where it stores information like cost type (CPC, CPM, CPD), cost, targeting behaviors, etc. The next step is to add <em>creatives<\/em> for the ad.<\/p>\n<h3>Creatives<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Creatives<\/strong> are the images of the ads. Every time a <strong>Line Item<\/strong> is added, you\u2019ll need to add (and approve) at least one creative for it.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>After saving a <em><strong>Line item<\/strong><\/em>, click on <em><strong>need creatives<\/strong><\/em> to add an image for the ad.<\/li>\n<li>Fill in the <em><strong>Name<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Ad slot size<\/strong><\/em> (banner size), <em><strong>Creative type<\/strong><\/em>, and <em><strong>Manual Weight<\/strong><\/em> (if you need to control the priority of banner rotations).<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Save<\/strong><\/em> it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The <strong>Creative type<\/strong> determines how you serve the banner image. Google Ad Manager can host your banners internally (whether they are jpg, flash, gif, or png) or you can host them elsewhere and insert the image URL. Use <em>rich media<\/em> if you need to manually insert HTML codes.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a sample of how the creative upload page should be filled.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/google-ad-manager\/upload-creatives.jpg\" alt=\"Creative upload page\" width=\"500\" height=\"342\"><\/figure>\n<p>Remember to <em><strong>Approve and activate<\/strong><\/em> the creative.<\/p>\n<p>Repeat all the steps in <strong>Orders<\/strong>, <strong>Line Items<\/strong>, and <strong>Creatives<\/strong> for every individual banner. In our case, we will repeat this eight times to fill up all our ad slots.<\/p>\n<h2>Display <em>Banners<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s the final step before ads start showing on our website \u2013 generating the codes and pasting them into our source code.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Go to <strong><em>Inventory<\/em><\/strong> -&gt; <strong><em>Ad Slots<\/em><\/strong> and click on <strong><em>Generate Sample HTML<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Add<\/strong><\/em> all slots needed to the <em><strong>Selected Items<\/strong><\/em> section.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em><strong>Generate Sample HTML<\/strong><\/em>. <\/li>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/google-ad-manager\/generate-sample-html.jpg\" alt=\"Generate sample HTML\"><\/figure>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Scroll to the bottom to find your generated codes.
