We whistle while we tinker away at the next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/android-wear-fitness-apps\/\">fitness app<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/wearable-gadgets\/\">wearable tech<\/a>, <strong>making every effort to stay naively unaware<\/strong> of the shaky underpinnings of our techie culture.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re shaky <strong>because they\u2019re inconsistent<\/strong>, and many of the visions and routines we boast of are glaringly at odds. With <strong>no way of knowing what works<\/strong> and what doesn\u2019t, not before enough time passes as to see which \"holy grail\" <strong>works and which is plain nonsense<\/strong>, we nonetheless tout our way as <em>the <\/em>way because\u2026 <em>who\u2019s to tell it isn\u2019t? <\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"recommended_top\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<strong>Read Also:<\/strong>\u00a0\n\t\t\t\t\t<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/unraveling-social-media\/\">How Social Media Evolves and Influences Us [Op-Ed]<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<h2>Big-picture inconsistencies<\/h2>\n<p>Living <strong>inside the tech ecosystem<\/strong> is risky, as it might endear us all to the notion that that\u2019s all there is to the world. To keep yourself <strong>grounded in reality<\/strong>, you might want to put up a post-it somewhere within eyeshot that reads: <strong>4 billion people still haven\u2019t got <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/4-billion-people-are-still-without-internet-1732277571\">access to the internet<\/a><\/strong>, that\u2019s more than half the world\u2019s population.<\/p>\n<h3>The app industry<\/h3>\n<p>We glorify cloning (code, apps) and <strong>innovation all in one breath<\/strong>. To get an idea of what I mean by the former, look no further than aggregators or app-skinning mavens or <strong>Rocket Internet that keep raking it in<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techmeme.com\/\">Techmeme<\/a> uses <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/ten-years-later-how-techmeme-has-avoided-click-bait-auto-play-rivera\">humans and algorithms<\/a> at the same time, and while it came up it only used the bots. <\/li>\n<li>Fitness apps\/trackers that basically do the exact same thing (and can even <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.shape.com\/lifestyle\/mind-and-body\/do-fitness-apps-actually-help-you-lose-weight\">hinder your <\/a>health goals) keep cropping up to much media ballyhoo, while <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/170264\/adult-obesity-rate.as\">obesity rates are holding<\/a> steady. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you\u2019re <strong>limiting yourself to the copycat model<\/strong>, but you\u2019ve got a marketer playing up your app, chances are <strong>you\u2019ll be landing on your feet<\/strong>, and on the front page of tech mags, side by side with the new Apple dongle. And that\u2019s as much a <strong>product of lazy journalism<\/strong> practiced by some media outlets, as a need for<strong> exaggerated coverage that might validate a still nascent industry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/techie-culture-paradoxes\/the-app-industry.jpeg\" alt=\"the-app-industry\" width=\"800\" height=\"408\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Online privacy<\/h3>\n<p>Perhaps the <strong>higher-profile dichotomy in the cyber ecosystem<\/strong> right now is the privacy issue. While we all put a premium on users\u2019 data and make sure everybody knows it, <strong>the breaches are becoming so prevalent<\/strong>, there\u2019s even a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mainstreet.com\/article\/hackers-for-hire-the-2015-way-to-snoop-on-lovers-even-scores-even-erase-government-records\">marketplace<\/a> where hackers peddle DDOS attacks and <strong>any kind of hacking imaginable to whoever\u2019s willing to pay \u2013 no questions asked<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Also, while the <strong>warnings are everywhere these days<\/strong> (read, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2015\/08\/26\/ashley-madison-hack\/\">Ashley Madison<\/a>) many apps, like custom keyboards for the iPhone, require a <strong>high level of trust from the get-go<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Social media<\/h3>\n<p>And I won\u2019t even get into social media, which facilitates interaction between people on opposite sides of the world\u2026 <strong>lumped together with harassment, cyber-bullying, and ever more ways of attack<\/strong>. I\u2019m thinking about the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gamergate_controversy\">GamerGate ploys<\/a>, for instance, but also automated systems that (lets anyone) prey on <strong>sensitive information online to wreak havoc in real life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It increasingly seems like, to get the most out of the internet these days, the trade-off is steep. And tech companies\u2019 <strong>interest in developing \"antidotes\" to these problems created by tech is minimal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/techie-culture-paradoxes\/social-media-2.jpeg\" alt=\"social-media\" width=\"800\" height=\"408\"><\/figure>\n<p>On the one hand, we\u2019re stressing <strong>commitment to social issues<\/strong>, on the other, we\u2019ve got <strong>Ellen Pao whose fight against Silicon Valley gender bias<\/strong> has just been shut down in court. And the non-techies are enraged, with good reason too, by the gentrification dividing the cities where tech plants its flag \u2013 you can <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebolditalic.com\/articles\/7266-an-open-letter-to-anyone-moving-to-san-francisco-for-a-tech-job\">read about<\/a> <strong>\"the ultimate selling out of San Francisco\u2019s soul\"<\/strong> to get an idea of what I\u2019m on about.<\/p>\n<h2>Office culture inconsistencies<\/h2>\n<p>Remember how <strong>Google introduced the open office trend<\/strong>, which took off like gangbusters, only to fail miserably industry-wide when it turned out the <strong>sharing plan was hindering people\u2019s well-being, health or productivity<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean <strong>countless other startups aren\u2019t still following suit<\/strong>, in hopes that the open office will foster a better collaboration between employees. As it turns out, <strong>the entrepreneurial CEO is a contradiction onto himself<\/strong>, eager to see people get along and share a meal, cafeteria-style, as well as be productive individually; to <strong>put a playful spin on work, as well as toil relentlessly towards the bottom line<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So, which is it, <strong>a culture that nurtures office friendships<\/strong> or a cold sweatshop-style company that only notices and rewards those sacrificing life for work, while <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/08\/16\/technology\/inside-amazon-wrestling-big-ideas-in-a-bruising-workplace.html\">punishing<\/a> everyone else?<\/p>\n<p>While everyone is <strong>publicizing their support for a healthy work-life balance<\/strong>, some even suggesting a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/business\/archive\/2015\/06\/four-day-workweek\/396530\/\">4-day work week<\/a> should be the norm, \"the dream\", aka the Google way, is a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/silicon-valley-tech-companies-isolate-workers-inside-a-bubble\/\">close-knit, closed-off work ecosystem<\/a> where the<strong> hours are long inside the bubble <\/strong>(with perks and downtime included) and socializing outside of work is rendered unnecessary as well as impossible. Ersatz meaning, <strong>top-down manufactured experiences for the company win<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/techie-culture-paradoxes\/office-inconsistencies.jpg\" alt=\"office-inconsistencies\" width=\"800\" height=\"408\"><\/figure>\n<p>To circle back to the perks, which are always salient on job ads for software companies, the <strong>eating-together mantra is one of the big ones<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>So there are <strong>highly advertisable perks<\/strong> \u2013 cooking classes, and Michelin-star chefs on standby, and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/spoonuniversity.com\/lifestyle\/see-what-employees-at-nycs-hottest-startups-are-eating\">fast food heaped floor to ceiling<\/a> \u2013 provided for employees at the <strong>well-oiled happiness machines commonly known as tech startups<\/strong>. On the one hand, you\u2019ve got <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/05\/25\/technology\/in-busy-silicon-valley-protein-powder-is-in-demand.html\">Soylent everything<\/a> being seen and consumed by the bucketfuls, as <strong>the secret to engineers\u2019 productivity<\/strong>, seeing as it takes the thought, decision-making and time (and taste!) out of eating.<\/p>\n<p>So which is it, <strong>mindfulness, yoga classes and health before work<\/strong>, or bodily concerns sped-up or obliterated for the good of the company? <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/slideshow\/249467\"> Generous parental leave<\/a> for a happier employee or <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@jcheiffetz\/i-had-a-baby-and-cancer-when-i-worked-at-amazon-this-is-my-story-9eba5eef2976\">fine-print-heavy parental leave<\/a>?<\/p>\n<h2> Sum and substance<\/h2>\n<p>Most of these <strong>contradictions inherent in our always renewing techie lifestyle are puzzling <\/strong>\u2013 many are just par for the course, normal in an industry still trying to find its identity. But the <strong>problem lies with perception<\/strong> \u2013 if you\u2019re expected to be tied to your desk while the world around you is starting to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/the-future-is-happening-now-ok_n_6887998\">redefine the workplace<\/a> as remote, <strong>there\u2019s going to be friction<\/strong>.
