People these days love everyday objects with a touch of technology. A gleaming example of it are the feature-filled handheld devices called e-book readers<\/strong> that enable you to easily download e-books<\/a> and read them at home or on the go.<\/p>\n

One of the most famous and top notch e-readers<\/strong> available today is the Amazon\u2019s Kindle. It comes in four different versions<\/strong> that offer various features and price points:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Kindle (8th Generation)<\/a><\/li>\n
  2. Paperwhite<\/a><\/li>\n
  3. Voyage<\/a><\/li>\n
  4. Oasis<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Besides the usual tasks of reading, highlighting and looking up dictionaries, there are many other ways<\/strong> you can make most of your Kindle device<\/strong>. In this article, I will share 20 tips with you on how to do so.<\/p>\n

    Note that all of the following tips are applicable to Kindle (8th Generation)<\/strong>, and some for the later editions as well.<\/p>\n

    1. Take screenshots<\/h2>\n

    Tap any two opposite corners<\/strong> (top-right and bottom-left, or top-left and bottom-right corners) of the screen at the same time to take a screenshot of the current page<\/strong> on your Kindle device.<\/p>\n

    The screenshots are saved as PNG files<\/strong> on the device. You can later connect your Kindle to a computer and access those images via File Explorer or Finder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    2. Email documents to your Kindle<\/h2>\n

    To email your personal documents to your Kindle, you need to know your Kindle email ID<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Go to the \u201cSettings\u201d<\/strong> page by either tapping at the top of the screen<\/strong> and then on the quick action icon, or by tapping on the menu icon at the top-right corner of the Home screen<\/strong> and then on \u201cSettings\u201d.<\/p>\n

    Once the \u201cSettings\u201d page is open:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Select \u201cDevice Options<\/strong> and go to Personalise Your Kindle\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    2. Under \u201cSend-to-Kindle E-mail\u201d<\/strong>, you will see your Kindle email ID.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Note that you can email to your Kindle only from your registered email ID<\/strong> in Amazon.<\/p>\n

      If you want to include another email ID<\/strong> to send documents from:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Sign in to your Amazon account.<\/li>\n
      2. Tap on your name at the top-right corner.<\/li>\n
      3. Select the \u201cManage Your Content and Devices<\/strong> and go to the \u201cSettings\u201d<\/strong> menu.<\/li>\n
      4. Under \u201cApproved Personal Document E-mail List\u201d<\/strong>, add a new email ID to receive documents from.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        3. Convert e-books to Kindle format<\/h2>\n

        Amazon\u2019s command-line tool<\/strong> called KindleGen<\/a><\/strong> can convert your non-Kindle format e-books<\/strong> (ePub, even HTML) to Kindle format. Once you have downloaded the tool, unzip it, and follow the instructions for your OS<\/strong> in the README file<\/a> to make the conversion.<\/p>\n

        4. Turn off the screen<\/h2>\n

        If you don\u2019t want to see the screensaver<\/strong> you can turn it off. All you need to do is to press and hold the power button<\/strong> for about seven seconds until a dialog box appears with the options \u201cCancel\u201d, \u201cRestart\u201d<\/strong>, and \u201cScreen Off\u201d<\/strong>. From here, select \u201cScreen Off\u201d, and you wont be seeing the screensaver any further.<\/p>\n

        \"Kindle<\/figure>\n

        5. Get a custom screensaver<\/h2>\n

        In order to use custom screensavers in Kindle, you\u2019ll need to jailbreak the device<\/strong>. If you are comfortable with tech hacks<\/strong> head on to this Lifehacker article<\/a> on jailbreaking Kindle. Once the device is ready, you can add your images<\/strong> and use them as a screensaver<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        Remember that jailbreaking a Kindle<\/strong> might void its warranty<\/strong>, so check the warranty terms and conditions of your device before proceeding.<\/p>\n

        6. Send web pages to Kindle<\/h2>\n

        Download and install the \u201cSend to Kindle\u201d browser extension<\/strong> for Chrome<\/a> or Firefox<\/a> to send web articles to your Kindle device. You can also use services like IFTTT<\/a> to send articles to Kindle<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        7. Add a \u201cSend to Kindle\u201d button<\/h2>\n

        If you have a website where you want to add<\/strong> a \u201cSend to Kindle\u201d option for your contents, such as articles or blog posts, go to Amazon\u2019s Send to Kindle Button<\/a> page<\/strong> and fill in all the relevant information to get the code<\/strong> for a \u201cSend to Kindle\u201d button that you can add to your website.<\/p>\n

        8. Subscribe for books<\/h2>\n

        In some countries, the Amazon Prime membership includes Prime Reading where certain selected titles are free to read<\/strong>. But, if you can\u2019t avail that offer, or you\u2019re not a Prime member, you can still get unlimited reading of over a million titles<\/strong> using Kindle Unlimited<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        This Amazon subscription service<\/strong> lets you read any number of titles under its label<\/strong>. Some popular series such as Harry Potter<\/a> and Hunger Games<\/a> are available under this scheme. You can look for more Kindle Unlimited Eligible books<\/strong> here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

        \"Kindle<\/a><\/figure>\n

        9. Unfreeze the Kindle<\/h2>\n

        Your Kindle can freeze (hang or stop working temporarily) at time. If such a thing happens turn off the screen<\/strong> and choose \u201cRestart\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        If this doesn\u2019t work (i.e. the dialog box doesn\u2019t appear) press and hold the power button for 30 seconds<\/strong>. After 30 seconds, the indicator light will turn orange and blink four times. Release it<\/strong> then and the device will restart.<\/p>\n

        10. Hide recommendations<\/h2>\n

        By default, you\u2019ll see book recommendations on the Home screen<\/strong>. If you don\u2019t want to see them<\/strong> follow these steps:<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Go to \u201cSettings\u201d<\/strong> and tap \u201cDevice Options\u201d<\/strong>. From this menu go to \u201cPersonalise Your Kindle\u201d<\/strong> and tap on \u201cAdvanced Options\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
        2. From \u201cAdvanced Options\u201d turn off the \u201cHome Screen View\u201d<\/strong> option.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          In Kindle Voyage and later editions, you might find an option to turn off recommendations on the \u201cPersonalise Your Kindle\u201d<\/strong> page itself.<\/p>\n

          11. Convert scans into Kindle books<\/h2>\n

          You can convert the scanned version of a physical book<\/strong> (in English) to a Kindle e-book by using Amazon\u2019s Kindle Convert<\/a><\/strong> software.<\/p>\n

          12. Check remaining space<\/h2>\n

          You can check how much space you have left<\/strong> in your Kindle by following these steps:<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Tap at the quick action icon at the top of the screen in order to go to the \u201cSettings\u201d page<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
          2. Tap the menu icon<\/strong> shown at the top-right corner of the \u201cSettings\u201d page.<\/li>\n
          3. Select \u201cDevice Info\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Or, on the \u201cSettings\u201d<\/strong> page, select \u201cDevice Options\u201d<\/strong>, then \u201cDevice Info\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

            The \u201cDevice Info\u201d page shows the MAC Address<\/strong>, Serial Number<\/strong>, Network Capability<\/strong>, and Firmware Version<\/strong> of the Kindle, along with the available free space<\/strong> in MB.<\/p>\n

            13. Update software manually<\/h2>\n

            In case you are unable to connect your Kindle device to WiFi and want to manually update its software<\/strong>, head to Amazon\u2019s software update page<\/a><\/strong> to download the latest software update for your device.<\/p>\n

              \n
            1. Connect the Kindle to your computer via USB and open the Kindle drive<\/strong> in the computer (from My Computer or Finder).<\/li>\n
            2. Copy the software update file<\/strong> into the root folder of your Kindle device.<\/li>\n
            3. Disconnect the device<\/strong> from the computer.<\/li>\n
            4. Go to the \u201cSettings\u201d page<\/strong> on your Kindle, and tap the menu icon.<\/li>\n
            5. Tap the \u201cUpdate Your Kindle\u201d<\/strong> option to start the update process.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              14. Borrow public library books<\/h2>\n

              If you live in the US you can borrow Kindle books<\/strong> available in selected public libraries and send them to your device. The book you\u2019ll borrow will only be available for a limited time<\/strong>. Also, you\u2019ll need a library card<\/strong> and a PIN<\/strong> from the public library to borrow the books.<\/p>\n

              15. Get clear white portion<\/h2>\n

              The E Ink technology<\/strong> used in Kindle leaves behind an imprint of previous text<\/strong> after changing the text on the screen at times. If that happens to you and you\u2019re finding the trace<\/strong> of previously appeared text on the screen interfering with your reading experience, then you can enable \u201cPage Refresh\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

              It causes the screen to be refreshed<\/strong> for every new page that appears on the screen and keeps the white portion clear of any marks.<\/p>\n

                \n
              1. Go to the \u201cSettings\u201d<\/strong> page.<\/li>\n
              2. Select \u201cReading Options\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
              3. Turn on \u201cPage Refresh\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                16. Zoom images<\/h2>\n

                Press on an image<\/strong> in an e-book and hold for a second<\/strong> before lifting back your finger. A zoom icon<\/strong> (magnifying glass with a plus sign) will appear on the image. Tap the icon to zoom<\/strong>. To zoom further, pinch out with two fingers<\/strong> on the image.<\/p>\n

                17. Add \u201cSend to Kindle\u201d menu to your desktop<\/h2>\n

                You can add a \u201cSend to Kindle\u201d context menu<\/strong> to your desktop. So, when you have a document you want to send to your Kindle device, just right-click (or two-finger-click) on the document<\/strong>, and select \u201cSend to Kindle\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                To add this context menu, download the installer software<\/strong> created by Amazon, that installs the context menu to your computer. Here are the download links for PC<\/a><\/strong> and for Mac<\/a><\/strong>. Once downloaded, open the installer (or package), and follow the instructions to install the software<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

                18. Export highlights and notes<\/h2>\n

                You can email your notes and highlights<\/strong> to yourself. When a book is open:<\/p>\n

                  \n
                1. Tap at the top of the screen and then on the menu button<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
                2. Select \u201cNotes\u201d<\/strong> and tap \u201cExport Notes\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                  There\u2019s another way to export all the notes in your Kindle. When your device is connected to a computer<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

                    \n
                  1. Open the Kindle in File Explorer<\/strong> (from My Computer) or Finder<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
                  2. Open the \u201cDocuments\u201d<\/strong> and go to \u201cMy Clippings.txt\u201d<\/strong> file. It will have all the highlights and notes from the device.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                    19. Accessorize your Kindle<\/h2>\n

                    Besides a typical flip cover<\/a>, there are other Kindle accessories<\/strong> you might find useful. If you have the starting-priced Kindle you won\u2019t have the backlight feature<\/strong> in the hardware to be able to read in the dark. For such a device, check out clip-on reading lights<\/a><\/strong> to solve that problem.<\/p>\n

                    The device comes with a USB cable only for charging<\/strong> but not with power adapters. Although you can use pretty much any USB power adapter that you already have, Amazon sells its own range<\/strong> of AC adapters<\/a> that claim a less than four-hour charging time<\/strong> for Kindle.<\/p>\n

                    If you have bought the pricier Kindle versions<\/strong> there are protection plans<\/a><\/strong> you might be interested in.<\/p>\n

                    20. Get AWS Documentation<\/h2>\n

                    If you use an Amazon Web Service (AWS)<\/a> you can get its documentation<\/strong> in Kindle format. To do so, go to the AWS Documentation page<\/a>. Click on the service you want the documentation of, then on the link \u201cKindle\u201d to get the free Kindle document<\/strong> sent to your device.<\/p>\n
