It\u2019s a great idea to do some <strong>benchmarking research<\/strong>. Identify the leaders in your industry and check if their logos have something in common.<\/p>\n<p>Then, you have an important choice to make at the beginning, precisely, whether your logo will be <strong>iconic<\/strong>, <strong>logotype<\/strong>, or a <strong>combination of both<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Iconic logos, as the name suggests, are <strong>drawn around an icon<\/strong>. Photos are <strong>pixelated<\/strong> and converting them into vectors would be a wasted effort, as the resulting logo surely <strong>wouldn\u2019t look good<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Understand the color wheel<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to design a great logo you should be well-equipped with some <strong>solid industry research<\/strong> and a <strong>vector graphics tool<\/strong> to work with. Before you mess around with some icons and text, make sure you understand <strong>how to use colors right<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the <abbr title=\"Red-Yellow-Blue\">RYB<\/abbr> color model, <strong>red, yellow, and blue<\/strong> are considered the primary colors. The three secondary colors are <strong>green, orange, and purple<\/strong>. They are created by <strong>mixing two primary colors<\/strong>. For example, think of red vs. green or blue vs. orange. The <strong>high contrast<\/strong> of complementary colors creates a <strong>bright and vibrant look<\/strong>, especially at full saturation.<\/p>\n<p>Complementary colors are not very good for text but are <strong>good for most logos<\/strong>. For instance, the logotype of <strong>Visa<\/strong> is one of these successful logo designs. The design uses blue and (orangish) yellow as complementary colors. However, be sure to <strong>have enough of contrast<\/strong> when using analogous colors.<\/p>\n<p>The logo of <strong>McDonald\u2019s<\/strong> is one of the most famous examples for using an analogous color scheme. Red, orange, and light-yellow match really well here. And, it\u2019s a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/why-are-fast-food-signs-red-2015-9\">proven fact<\/a> that the red color <strong>makes people hungry<\/strong>\u2014a definitely smart choice from McDonald\u2019s.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/logo-design-tips-beginners\/04-mcdonalds-logo.jpg?2\" width=\"854\" height=\"648\" alt=\"McDonald's logo\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Triadic color schemes<\/h3>\n<p>A triadic color scheme includes colors that are <strong>evenly spaced around the color wheel<\/strong>. For example, imagine purple, green, and orange. Triadic color schemes tend to be <strong>quite bright<\/strong>, even if you use somewhat pale colors. It can also be a good idea to <strong>let one color dominate<\/strong> and use the other two <strong>for accent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, 7-Eleven has a logo with a triadic color scheme. Green is used as the <strong>main color<\/strong> and red and orange are <strong>for contrast<\/strong>. As a result, the logo is <strong>well-balanced and dynamic<\/strong>. Triadic logos work especially well for <strong>retail brands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/logo-design-tips-beginners\/05-7eleven-logo.jpg?2\" width=\"1400\" height=\"986\" alt=\"7eleven logo\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Master grids and structure<\/h2>\n<p>When designing a logo, always <strong>use a grid<\/strong> and <strong>pay attention to details<\/strong>. Make sure that the individual parts of your logo, such as letters and icons, are <strong>aligned proportionally<\/strong>. What you want to achieve is the <strong>instant recognition<\/strong> of your logo by your customers and business partners. Therefore, it\u2019s better to focus on making your logo <strong>minimalistic and straightforward<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The famous example of a simple minimalistic logo that made history is <strong>Nike<\/strong>. Created by a young designer, Carolyn Davidson in 1971, the image resembles a wing which is a <strong>hint for the brand name<\/strong>, Nike, named after the Greek goddess of victory. The logo later evolved into various formats but the core element has always remained same.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/logo-design-tips-beginners\/07-nike-logo.jpg?2\" width=\"1200\" height=\"432\" alt=\"Nike logo\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Use negative space wisely<\/h2>\n<p><strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Negative_space\">Negative space<\/a><\/strong> can be both <strong>your best friend and worst enemy<\/strong>. Some fonts and shapes create more negative space than others; make sure you <strong>balance them wisely<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You can also use negative space very creatively. For instance, <strong>FedEx<\/strong> is famous for an <strong>almost hidden arrow sign<\/strong> in its logo.
