It\u2019s a free web app that can take any number of images<\/strong> (under 10MB) and optimize their file size without quality loss<\/strong>. Typically, when exporting images in Photoshop you\u2019ll notice artifacts<\/a><\/strong> if you dramatically lower export quality.<\/p>\n

But with Compressor, you won\u2019t find any artifacts<\/strong>\u2014even though your images can have file sizes reduced by 20%-50% or more<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Right now, the project runs entirely in the browser<\/strong> but it may come with a downloadable program in the future. It supports four image formats<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

  1. JPEG<\/li>\n
  2. PNG<\/li>\n
  3. GIF<\/li>\n
  4. SVG<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Note all of these formats can run on the web<\/strong>, so it\u2019s the perfect tool for web designers who want to reduce the size of HTTP requests<\/strong>. Images are typically the biggest bottlenecks for site optimization<\/a><\/strong> and that\u2019s where Compressor can help.<\/p>\n

    To get started<\/strong>, just visit the \u201cUpload\u201d page<\/a> or click the \u201cTry it!\u201d button from the home page<\/a>. This brings you to a new screen where you can choose between \u201clossy\u201d or \u201clossless\u201d<\/strong> before uploading your file.<\/p>\n

    These two options define whether the original data of the image can be recovered<\/strong> by decompressing at a later date. Lossless compression reduces the file size<\/strong> while keeping original data intact and accessible<\/strong> by decompressing the data later.<\/p>\n

    Usually, people use these terms<\/a> when discussing MP3s or audio compression. But it applies to all compression<\/strong>, images as well.<\/p>\n

    If you don\u2019t care much about the extra data<\/strong>, then Lossy compression is fine.<\/p>\n

    Now click the \u201cUpload\u201d field and select an image<\/strong> from your computer. All the data processing is done on the server<\/strong> and once completed, you\u2019ll see a neat comparison slider<\/strong> to study the original against the compressed version.<\/p>\n

    Some images may see no difference<\/strong> in file size. Others may see a 15%-20% file size decrease<\/strong>, while others might see a decrease of 50% or more<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Compressor uses a number of free open source programs<\/strong> such as OptiPNG<\/a><\/strong>, JpegOptim<\/a><\/strong>, and Scour<\/a><\/strong> (among others). So it\u2019s tough to say exactly how this process works, but I can say it works well.<\/p>\n

    Once the compression finishes, you can either download the new file<\/strong> or save it to cloud accounts<\/strong> like Dropbox or Google Drive.<\/p>\n
