It\u2019s never been easier to add Ajax to any website<\/strong>. In fact it\u2019s pretty common to build entire websites based around Ajax requests<\/strong> called Single-Page Apps (or SPAs<\/a>)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

However this has always required a bit of jQuery and some technical wrangling to update page content<\/strong>. If you just need some basic Ajax functionality<\/strong> you can use intercooler.js<\/a><\/strong> to mix this right into your HTML.<\/p>\n

Intercooler lets you write HTML attributes that natively contain Ajax request URLs<\/strong>. When users click certain links, you can dictate that Ajax requests run<\/strong> instead of the normal click action.<\/p>\n

This all relies on HTML5 data-* attributes<\/a><\/strong> such as ic-post-to<\/code>. You can add this attribute to a button or an anchor link, and it\u2019ll automatically connect into jQuery<\/strong> for an Ajax POST request.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s actually a page full of these attributes<\/a><\/strong> on the plugin website. Here\u2019s a bit of sample code<\/strong> to see how it looks:<\/p>\n

This would send an Ajax POST request to the URL \/buton_click<\/code><\/strong>, and load the response<\/strong> into the container element. Intercooler is a pretty simple library and incredibly powerful once you understand how it works.<\/p>\n
Granted this won\u2019t solve all your Ajax problems because it can\u2019t auto-update other areas of the page<\/strong>. It also can\u2019t append too many custom features<\/strong> without slowing down the page, so a detailed SPA<\/abbr> should really use custom Ajax code<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
Intercooler.js offers a more semantic way for writing Ajax code<\/strong> so that it loads and even offers a native fallback.<\/p>\n
To install intercooler<\/strong> you just need a copy of jQuery<\/strong> along with a copy of the intercooler library<\/strong> which can be found on GitHub<\/a>. You can even test without downloading<\/strong> any files by using a jQuery CDN and the local Intercooler CDN<\/a>.<\/p>\n
Put both into a <script><\/code> tag in the header of your page<\/strong>, and then just place the HTML attributes wherever you want!<\/p>\n
Take a peek at the demos page<\/a><\/strong> to see a full list of demos<\/strong> you can toy with. I especially like the \u2018Click to Edit\u2019<\/a> demo because it shows exactly what\u2019s possible and how far you can take this plugin.<\/p>\n
