There are many ways to access Windows 10 boot options<\/strong> with each having its own use case, and in this post, we will show you 5 different ways to access Windows 10 advanced boot options<\/strong>. Let\u2019s take a look at these options.<\/p>\n

If you can access Desktop<\/h2>\n

If Windows is working fine and you can access the desktop, then you can use the below-mentioned methods<\/strong> to access Windows 10 boot options.<\/p>\n

I \u2013 Hold the Shift key and restart <\/h3>\n

This is the easiest way<\/strong> to access Windows 10 boot options.<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. All you need to do is hold down the Shift key<\/strong> on your keyboard and restart the PC<\/strong>. <\/li>\n
  2. Open up the Start menu<\/strong> and click on \"Power\"<\/strong> button to open power options. <\/li>\n
  3. Now press and hold the Shift key<\/strong> and click on \"Restart\"<\/strong>. <\/li>\n
  4. Windows will automatically start in advanced boot options<\/strong> after a short delay. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This trick can work from anywhere<\/strong>, whether you click on \"Restart\"<\/strong> from the start menu, \"Shutdown\"<\/strong> dialog or the start screen<\/strong>. You just need to make sure you hold the Shift key<\/strong> while doing so. Do keep in mind that this method doesn\u2019t work with the virtual keyboard<\/strong>. If your physical keyboard isn\u2019t working, then this method will not work either.<\/p>\n

    II \u2013 Access Windows 10 boot options from Windows settings<\/h3>\n

    If you can\u2019t use the Shift<\/span> + Restart<\/span> option, then don\u2019t worry. You can also boot Windows 10 in advanced startup options<\/strong> from its settings.<\/p>\n

    1. Launch Windows 10 \"Settings\"<\/strong> from the Start menu<\/strong> and click on \"Update & Security\"<\/strong> at the bottom of the window. <\/li>\n

    2. Here move to the \"Recovery\"<\/strong> option and click on \"Restart now\"<\/strong> under \"Advanced startup\"<\/strong> option. Your PC will now restart into advanced boot options. <\/li>\n

      III \u2013 Use Command Prompt to access Windows 10 boot options <\/h3>\n

      If you are interested, you can also use a quick Command Prompt command<\/strong> to access the advanced boot options<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

      1. Right-click on the Windows 10 Start menu<\/strong> and select \"Command Prompt (Admin)\"<\/strong> from the menu.<\/li>\n
      2. In the Command Prompt window, type shutdown.exe \/r \/o <\/strong>and hit \"Enter\"<\/strong>. <\/li>\n

        You will see a prompt saying you are being signed out<\/strong>, just close it and Windows 10 will reboot to boot options. However, unlike the above methods where Windows restarts immediately, there will be a tiny delay before the Windows restart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

        And if can\u2019t access Desktop<\/h2>\n

        If you are unable to reach the desktop and the Windows keep crashing or restarting<\/strong>, then follow the below methods to access Windows 10 boot options and fix the problem.<\/p>\n

        I \u2013 Force Windows to start in advanced boot options <\/h3>\n

        By default, Windows is set to restart in advanced boot options<\/strong>, if it fails to start up. If any startup error is causing your Windows to crash, then it may automatically launch the boot options<\/strong> for you. However, it is not compulsory and Windows may get stuck in a boot cycle.<\/p>\n

        In such situation, you can force Windows to crash and open boot options<\/strong>. To do so,<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Start the Windows and as soon as you see Windows logo; press and hold the power button to force shutdown it<\/strong>. <\/li>\n
        2. You can also pull out the power supply<\/strong> (or battery) to force shutdown it. <\/li>\n
        3. Repeat this 2-4 times<\/strong> and Windows will open up boot options for you. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          For me, 2 times was enough to open up the boot options, your mileage may vary.<\/p>\n

          II \u2013 Use Windows 10 recovery drive <\/h3>\n

          A Windows recovery drive can troubleshoot many Windows problems<\/strong> in case Windows is not starting. If a force shutdown didn\u2019t help open up boot options, then this will definitely work<\/strong> for you.<\/p>\n

          If you haven\u2019t created a recovery driver for your PC already, then you can easily create one right now. All you need is a USB drive and a PC running Windows 10<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

            \n
          1. Use any Windows 10 PC<\/strong>, whether your own or friend\u2019s; there is no licensing issue. <\/li>\n
          2. Follow the instructions<\/strong> provided by Microsoft to create a recovery drive<\/a>. <\/li>\n
          3. Now attach the recovery drive to your faulty PC<\/strong> and restart it from this drive. <\/li>\n
          4. You will be asked to choose a keyboard layout<\/strong>. Choose the appropriate one (U.S in most cases) and the boot options will open up. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            III \u2013 Use Windows 10 installation drive\/disc<\/h3>\n

            You can also use a Windows 10 Installation drive\/ disc to access boot options<\/strong>. If you installed Windows 10 using a USB drive or disc,<\/p>\n

              \n
            1. You can boot from that USB\/disc<\/strong> and click on the \"Repair\"<\/strong> option to access Windows 10 boot options.<\/li>\n
            2. This is also a good option if you don\u2019t have access to another Windows 10 PC<\/strong> to create a recovery drive. <\/li>\n
            3. You can download Windows installer<\/strong><\/a> using any other PC and use it to create an installation drive<\/strong>. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              Exit Windows 10 boot options<\/h2>\n

              The aforementioned options should be enough to access Windows 10 boot options and let you troubleshoot whatever the problem is. When you are done, click on the \"Continue\"<\/strong> button to exit boot options<\/strong> and launch Windows 10.<\/p>\n

              If you have multiple operating systems, then the default operating system will launch. In that case, select \"Launch Another Operating System\"<\/strong> option and then select Windows 10 to launch it.<\/p>\n

              To summerize<\/h2>\n

              Holding Shift<\/span> key and restarting the PC is definitely the easiest option <\/strong>to access Windows 10 boot options. However, if Windows is acting up and you are unable to boot properly, then a recovery or installation drive will help<\/strong>.
