The menu usually comprises...\t\t\t\t\t\t<span>Read more<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Remove items from the context menu<\/h2>\n<p>With time, <strong>many entries become a part of the context menu<\/strong> making it long and sluggish, and so the solution is simple \u2013 <strong>remove the unwanted entries<\/strong>. Unfortunately, <strong>Windows doesn\u2019t offer any user interface to easily get rid of items in the context menu<\/strong>. However, all these entries are made in the Windows registry and we can manage them from there.<\/p>\n<p>You can <strong>either manually delete the entry from the registry or use a third-party program<\/strong> to do it for you. We are going to show you how to do it using both methods:<\/p>\n<h3>Manually delete entries from Windows registry<\/h3>\n<p>If you are <strong>not comfortable using a third-party program<\/strong> or don\u2019t have rights to install one (limited user account), you can <strong>manually delete the entries<\/strong> from the registry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Warning!<\/strong> Make sure you <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/kb\/322756\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">create a backup of your registry<\/a> before making any changes in it. Any <strong>wrong tweak could negatively affect your experience<\/strong> or even corrupt the Windows.<\/p>\n<p>To access Windows registry, press <span class=\"key\">Ctrl<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">R<\/span> keys and type \u201c<strong>regedit<\/strong>\u201d in the <em>Run <\/em>dialog. Once the registry is open, <strong>you need to search for the context menu<\/strong> entries in the below mentioned locations.<\/p>\n<pre>\r\nHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\*\\shellex\\ContextMenuHandlers\\\r\n\r\nHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\AllFileSystemObjects\\ShellEx\\ContextMenuHandlers\r\n\r\nHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\*\\shell\r\n\r\nHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Directory\\Background\\shell\r\n\r\nHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Directory\\Background\\shellex\\ContextMenuHandlers\r\n\r\nHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Folder\\shellex\\ContextMenuHandlers\\\r\n\r\nHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Directory\\shell\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>These <strong>locations will list context menu entries for folders, desktop and drives<\/strong>. You might even see same entry in multiple locations, so you will have to get rid of it from all the locations. To remove the entries from the context menu, <strong>simply delete it from the said locations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you are <strong>interested in re-enabling the items later in time<\/strong>, then you should disable it instead. To disable an item:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Double-click on its entry and add \u201c<strong>\u2013<\/strong>\u201d (minus sign)<\/strong> at the end of the string to corrupt it. <\/li>\n<li>When you want to enable it again, <strong>simply remove the minus sign<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/manage-windows-context-menu\/01-Manage-Windows-Context-Menu-delete-entry.jpg\" alt=\"delete entry\" width=\"800\" height=\"360\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Third-party program to remove context menu items<\/h3>\n<p>There are <strong>dozens of third-party tools that can help you manage Windows context menu<\/strong>. All these tools fetch entries from the registry and show them to you in a simple interface.<\/p>\n<p>From there you can <strong>remove, add, edit, disable or enable items<\/strong>. For this purpose, I trust <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.door2windows.com\/ultimate-windows-context-menu-customizer-customize-context-menu-in-windows-xp-vista-7\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ultimate Windows Context Menu Customizer<\/a>. It is a light, easy to use and free context menu customizer tool that <strong>works on all versions of Windows<\/strong> (Microsoft <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=21\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">.Net Framework 3.5<\/a> may be required).<\/p>\n<p>We will be using this tool to both <strong>remove and add items to Windows context menu<\/strong>, so you should download it now.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch the program and you will see <strong>all six types of Windows context menu at the top left corner<\/strong>, including Computer, Desktop, Drivers, Files, Folder and Desktop and Folders. <\/li>\n<li>You can <strong>click on each of the context menus<\/strong> to see all the entries inside them. <\/li>\n<li>To disable an entry, click on the entry and then check the checkbox next to \u201c<strong>Disabled<\/strong>\u201d below in the settings. <strong>This will disable the item and it can be enabled again when needed<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/manage-windows-context-menu\/02-Manage-Windows-Context-Menu-disable-entry.jpg\" alt=\"disable entry\" width=\"800\" height=\"365\"><\/figure>\n<p>You can also <strong>remove the entry if you don\u2019t plan on using it in the future<\/strong>. To do so, select the entry from the list and then click on \u201c<strong>Remove Item<\/strong>\u201d at the bottom to remove it immediately.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/manage-windows-context-menu\/03-Manage-Windows-Context-Menu-Disable-Item.jpg\" alt=\"disable item\" width=\"800\" height=\"717\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Keep programs from adding items in the context menu<\/h2>\n<p>Your <strong>Windows context menu should look a lot tidier now<\/strong> that the unwanted items have been removed. However, <strong>the context menu can again get cluttered as you add more programs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there is no one-shot method to prevent programs from adding options in the context menu. <strong>You will have to be careful while installing the program to prevent it from adding items in the context menu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the programs will ask you whether a context menu entry should be created or not. If you will blindly click on \u201c<strong>Next<\/strong>\u201d and then \u201c<strong>Install<\/strong>\u201c, then your context menu will be cluttered very soon. You just need to be careful while installing programs and <strong>decline the offer to add context menu entry<\/strong> if you don\u2019t need it.<\/p>\n<p>Some rogue programs <strong>may not give this option while installing<\/strong>, and in that case you will have to <strong>remove the entry yourself<\/strong> using the explanation above.<\/p>\n<h2>Add items in Windows context menu<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Windows context menu is one of the fastest ways to access features and programs on your PC<\/strong>. You just need to right-click and select your prefered item and it will instantly open up, and so <strong>adding items in the context menu can be very productive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, <strong>it is very easy to add any type of item in the context menu using Ultimate Windows Context Menu Customizer<\/strong> tool that we shared above.<\/p>\n<p>Launch the tool and <strong>you will see dozens of pre-defined Windows apps in the right column<\/strong>. This will be used to identify what program the entry opens. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Command:<\/strong> Click on the button at the end of this option (it has 3 horizontal dots) and Windows explorer will open up. <strong>Now navigate and look for executable file of the item that you would like to launch<\/strong>. A shortcut to the program will work as well. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Icon: <\/strong>This is an optional feature, but a handy one to easily find items. Here <strong>search and select the executable file of the item again<\/strong> (that has the icon) and its icon will be used to show in the context menu. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Position: <\/strong>Select <strong>where the item should show up in the context menu<\/strong>, top, middle or bottom. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once all the information is provided, click on the \u201c<strong>Add Item<\/strong>\u201d button below and <strong>it will be added in the context menu<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/manage-windows-context-menu\/05-Manage-Windows-Context-Menu-interface.jpg\" alt=\"menu customizer\" width=\"800\" height=\"717\"><\/figure>\n<p>Now just <strong>open the context menu where you have added the entry<\/strong> and it will be accessible.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/manage-windows-context-menu\/06-Manage-Windows-Context-Menu-add-item-to-context-meni.jpg\" alt=\"add item to context menu\" width=\"800\" height=\"711\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Add folders in the context menu<\/h2>\n<p>The Ultimate Windows Context Menu Customizer will not help you add specific folders in the context menu, and <strong>you will have to depend on a different app<\/strong> for this purpose. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coretechnologies.com\/products\/MyFolders\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MyFolders<\/a> is a good tool for this purpose that will add a <strong>single entry in the context menu from which you can access all your favorite folders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Once MyFolders is installed, <strong>right-click anywhere and hover your mouse<\/strong> cursor over \u201c<strong>MyFolders<\/strong>\u201d entry. <\/li>\n<li>From the side menu, click on \u201c<strong>Settings<\/strong>\u201d to customize the tool.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/manage-windows-context-menu\/07-Manage-Windows-Context-Menu-item-added.jpg\" alt=\"items added\" width=\"800\" height=\"447\"><\/figure>\n<li>In the settings, you can use the \u201c<strong>Add<\/strong>\u201d button <strong>to start adding important folders in MyFolders<\/strong>.
