Google Pixel, Google\u2019s first phone inside and out<\/strong> (but built by HTC), has landed. This marks Google\u2019s late entry into the foray of premium smartphones currently dominated by explosive names like Apple and Samsung. As the keynote and promo video for Google Pixel makes its rounds\u2026 you know what? Let\u2019s address the elephant in the room.<\/p>\n

If you have watched the keynote and the video that introduces the Google Pixel phone, it almost seems like Google is content to just unveil their first ever #madebygoogle phone, exactly<\/em> like how Apple has been announcing all<\/em> of their phones.<\/p>\n

First, the Keynote was very Apple-y<\/h3>\n

For starters, it was much more toned down, and it happened on a much smaller stage with white backgrounds, as opposed to how Apple releases their \"best iPhone ever\", every single time.<\/p>\n

To be fair, it\u2019s not like Google can\u2019t splurge on the presentation. Here\u2019s what Google\u2019s I\/O Conference in 2015 looked like.<\/p>\n

But I digress. If you have watched Apple\u2019s Keynotes, you might find a few quirks that almost always turn up in such an event: the multiple uses of the million numbers<\/strong>, excessive use of adjectives<\/strong>, the summary of features<\/strong> fitting for 5-year-olds (the Internet standard), down to that dreary monologue of how developers create seamless, smart technology to work in the shadows so you, the user, can live life to the fullest (yadda, yadda, you enslaved us already, get on with it).<\/p>\n

Oh yes, let\u2019s not forget the intimate look at a flying, spinning phone.<\/p>\n

Then, the dissing began<\/h3>\n

As it\u2019s customary in every new smartphone to reveal, the \"dissing of the competition\" is a tradition that cannot be skipped \u2013 if only to elicit the \"oooooooo\"\u2019s and \"shots fired\" responses from both sides of the fence.<\/p>\n

There was the mention of a \" doesn\u2019t have a version number new\", the \"no unsightly camera bump\" jab, and of course, the \" satisfyingly not new\" headphone jack burn.<\/p>\n

But the icing on top came when they announced the phone colors: Quite Black, Really Blue, Very Silver.<\/p>\n

One can argue that it doesn\u2019t look like they give AF. One could also argue that are mocking the way smartphone manufacturers claim colors<\/em> that they are pulling out of the sky as their own invention.<\/p>\n

\"so<\/figure>\n

Or one could also argue that Google understand how the Internet works<\/a> \u2013 remember, they do<\/em> know what you search for.<\/p>\n

Personally, I think they know what they are doing<\/a> (if you didn\u2019t click that last link, it just says that the limited-edition (so Apple) Really Blue<\/em> Google Pixel and Pixel XL are sold out. Really.)<\/p>\n

These two phones, they really look alike<\/h3>\n

I have no arguments against this; there is only a limited number of ways a smartphone can look these days. Unlike how it was back when Nokia was the brand to beat.<\/p>\n

Sigh. Good times.<\/p>\n

That said, you can argue that many phones out there look like an iPhone these days, like this HTC One A9 (pictured) and the Sisley s90 (pictured) , the Dakele 3<\/a>, ZTE Blade Z6 etc. And for what it\u2019s worth, Pixel has the fingerprint sensor at the back, and still comes with a headphone jack.<\/p>\n

And Pixel\u2019s starting price isn\u2019t any cheaper than an iPhone<\/h3>\n

Pricing starts at $649 for the smaller phone with 32 GB storage, while the larger phone sells for $769. For 128 GB, the smaller phone goes for $749 and $869 for the plus size version. Which phone am I talking about? Why, the Google Pixel\/Pixel XL AND the iPhone 7\/7 Plus.<\/p>\n

Note that Google Pixel is available as an unlocked phone or direct from Verizon, plus a few more places.<\/p>\n

There are plenty of parallels too<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Device Protection for Pixel is AppleCare for iPhone<\/li>\n
  2. Google Store is Apple Store<\/li>\n
  3. Google Assistant is Apple Siri<\/li>\n
  4. Duo is FaceTime (Is Allo = Messages?)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Just to name a few.<\/p>\n

    Apple fanboys, it\u2019s time for revenge?<\/h3>\n

    If you follow the reactions of Pixel\u2019s announcement on social network, you might see a role reversal in progress. Android fans used to mock Apple fans for buying overpriced phones with innovations that Android or Motorola (or some other non-Apple brand) did first. This time around, it\u2019s the opposite.<\/p>\n

    Just read any comment section under a Google Pixel news story.<\/p>\n

    In all fairness, Pixel still has its perks<\/h3>\n
      \n
    1. The quick charging time is effing awesome: 7 hours in 15 mins. I just hope it won\u2019t explode. I\u2019m serious.<\/li>\n
    2. Unlimited storage for your photos and files. \"Storage almost full\" not found.<\/li>\n
    3. Customized Live Cases, designed with Google Earth and Google Trends, featuring work by \"artists\" like Chris Hadfield<\/a>, who is simply out of this world.<\/li>\n
    4. Pixel works with the Daydream VR Headset. VR has now leveled up from Cardboard to fabric.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      [Update 07\/10\/2016]<\/h3>\n

      Based on the reactions to this post, I\u2019ve added a necessary update.<\/p>\n

      1. I\u2019m an Android user. Never owned an iPhone.<\/p>\n

      2. Not that it mattered, because declaring whichever phone you own on the Internet opens you up to abuse from the other team anyways.<\/p>\n

      3. That said, we don\u2019t earn points for defending brands we buy. Technology will be replaced in a timely fashion, no matter how good or bad they are.<\/p>\n

      4. There are plenty more issues in the world that require equal, if not more, attention \u2013 a worrying presidential race that will affect the fate of more than one country, a crazy clown epidemic that is the stuff of nightmares, the global problems on Gates\u2019 and Zuckerberg\u2019s to-do list, Zika, wars, more hurricanes and disastrous climate changes etc. Maybe it\u2019s time for a priority check.<\/p>\n
