There are plenty of settings<\/strong> that Firefox offers besides general ones you can find in the Options menu. Many of these advanced settings can be found on specific browser pages<\/strong> that use the about:<\/code><\/a> protocol. In this article, I\u2019m going to show you 10 less-known Firefox settings<\/strong> that can come useful in your everyday workflow.<\/p>\n

When you visit any of the about:<\/code> pages in the list below, and are prompted with a warning message, just click either the OK<\/span> or the I\u2019ll be careful, I promise!<\/span> button \u2014 whichever one you encounter.<\/p>\n

1. Perform DNS Lookup<\/h3>\n

You can perform an in-house DNS lookup<\/strong> (finding the IP address of a domain) in Firefox.<\/p>\n

Type about:networking<\/code> into the URL bar, and press Enter. On the upcoming page, click \u201cDNS Lookup\u201d in the sidebar menu, type the domain name, and click Resolve<\/span> to see its IP address(es).<\/p>\n

2. Block Auto-Refresh<\/h3>\n

Sometimes web pages come with Refresh HTTP headers that make pages refresh frequently.<\/p>\n

If you want to stop that from happening, go to about:preferences#advanced<\/code>, and under the subtitle Accessibility, check the checkbox labeled \u201cWarn me when websites try to redirect or reload the page\u201d.<\/p>\n

3. Search As You Type<\/h3>\n

Pressing Ctrl<\/span>+F<\/span> opens an in-page search-box in Firefox that allows users to search for a string in a webpage. But it\u2019s possible to spare the key combo pressing and start searching as you start typing.<\/p>\n

In the \u201cAccessibility\u201d section of the about:preferences#advanced<\/code> page check the checkbox labeled \u201cSearch for text when I start typing\u201d.<\/p>\n

From now on, when you start typing, and the cursor isn\u2019t in a text input field on the page<\/strong>, Firefox will immediately start looking for the text on the web page.<\/p>\n

4. Unmap Backspace Key<\/h3>\n

To prevent being surprised by someone trying to sneakily backspace<\/em> their way into your browser history, you can replace the backspace action<\/strong> with one that scrolls the page up on pressing Backspace<\/span>, scrolls it down on Shift<\/span> + Backspace<\/span>. You can also configure the Backspace<\/span> key not to give any action at all.<\/p>\n

Go to about:config<\/code>, and type browser.backspace_action<\/code> into the search bar. The default value of this browser setting is 0<\/code>.<\/p>\n

Double-click on it, and change it to 1<\/code> for mapping scrolling action<\/strong> to the Backspace<\/span> key, or change it to 2<\/code> for unmapping it from any action<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

5. Move Around With Cursor Keys<\/h3>\n

Reading a long article or story online, and want more control while jumping line<\/strong>? You can use the cursor for in-text navigation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Under \u201cAccessibility\u201d on the about:preferences#advanced<\/code> page, check the option \u201cAlways use the cursor keys to navigate within pages\u201d.<\/p>\n

\"Move<\/figure>\n

Besides the default arrow cursor, a blinking text cursor<\/strong> will also appear on websites. You can move it around by using the arrow keys.<\/p>\n

6. Paste On Middle Click<\/h3>\n

Got a mouse with a middle button? Use it to paste text from the clipboard<\/strong> into text fields on web pages.<\/p>\n

Go to about:config<\/code>, and type middlemouse.paste<\/code> into the search bar. The default value is false<\/code>, double-click on it, and change it to true<\/code>.<\/p>\n

7. Customize Print Header & Footer<\/h3>\n

When you print a web page in Firefox, it uses a default layout<\/strong>. At the top-left corner of the print page there\u2019s the title of the web page, at top-right the URL, at bottom-left the page number of total pages, and at bottom-right the date-time.<\/p>\n

You can change this arrangement<\/strong>, for instance you can add something to the center of the header or footer, remove some of the default info altogether, or replace them with your custom text.<\/p>\n

On the about:config<\/code> page, there are six settings<\/strong> for the customization the print header and footer:<\/p>\n

  1. print.print_headercenter<\/code><\/li>\n
  2. print.print_headerleft<\/code><\/li>\n
  3. print.print_headerright<\/code><\/li>\n
  4. print.print_footercenter<\/code><\/li>\n
  5. print.print_footerleft<\/code><\/li>\n
  6. print.print_footerright<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    You need to type the name of the setting from the above list into the search bar on the about:config<\/code> page in order to change its value. The value can be any of the following strings, or your custom text<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

    1. &D<\/code> \u2013 Date-time<\/li>\n
    2. &P<\/code> \u2013 Page number<\/li>\n
    3. &PT<\/code> \u2013 Page number of total pages<\/li>\n
    4. &T<\/code> \u2013 Title of the web page<\/li>\n
    5. &U<\/code> \u2013 URL<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      8. Change Default Colors<\/h3>\n

      You have the option to change the default background, text, and link colors<\/strong> in Firefox.<\/p>\n

      Go to about:preferences#content<\/code>, click on the Colors\u2026<\/span> in the \u201cFonts & Colors\u201d section, and select the new colors.<\/p>\n

      9. Filter Awesome Bar Links<\/h3>\n

      Awesome Bar<\/a>, the location bar of Firefox shows a list of links when you start typing. The displayed links are taken from your bookmarks, browser history and currently open pages.<\/p>\n

      You can filter these Awesome Bar links<\/strong> by typing one of the following special characters into the location bar, either before your query or just on its own:<\/p>\n

      2. @<\/code> \u2013 Match URL<\/li>\n
      3. *<\/code> \u2013 Match only to links in bookmarks<\/li>\n

      5. +<\/code> \u2013 Match only to links that\u2019re tagged<\/li>\n
      6. %<\/code> \u2013 Match only to links that are open currently<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        10. Auto-Export Bookmarks In HTML<\/h3>\n

        If you want Firefox to auto-save your bookmarks<\/strong> in HTML format as a list of links, you can do so by going to about:config<\/code>, typing browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML<\/code> into the search bar, and changing the default false<\/code> value to true<\/code> by double-clicking on it.<\/p>\n

        When you restart your browser, a file named bookmarks.html<\/code> will appear in your Firefox profile folder with all the bookmark links.<\/p>\n

        To see your profile folder, go to about:support<\/code>, and press the button Show Folder<\/span>. Note that you may need to restart<\/strong> your whole system to make the change take effect.<\/p>\n
