I like Google Gtalk because it\u2019s light and fast. It uses less CPU memory compared to MSN Live Messenger. Here are some shortcuts, tips, and tricks to make your Gtalk experience better and more interesting. Full list after the jump.<\/p>\n

Line Break<\/h3>\n

Hold SHIFT<\/strong> and press ENTER<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bold Text<\/h3>\n

To make your text bold, put an asterisk (*) before and after the content. [Example] *this will be bold*<\/p>\n

Italic Text<\/h3>\n

To italicize your text, put an underscore (_) before and after the content. [Example] _this will be italic_<\/p>\n

Switch Between Chat Windows<\/h3>\n

Hold CTRL<\/strong> and press I<\/strong> to cycle through each chat window<\/p>\n

Minimize Chat Window<\/h3>\n

ALT<\/strong> + ESC<\/strong> will minimize the chat window. (For Gmail talk, it only works when the chat window is a popup)<\/p>\n

Restore Chat Window<\/h3>\n

WINDOWS<\/strong> + ESC<\/strong> will restore your Gtalk from minimized mode.<\/p>\n

Open Multiple Gtalk Applications<\/h3>\n

Click Start<\/strong> -> Run<\/strong> and enter the following in the Open dialog: \"C:\\Program Files\\Google\\Google Talk\\googletalk.exe\" \/nomutex<\/code><\/p>\n

Misc Gtalk Information<\/h2>\n

  1. You don\u2019t have to say YES or NO when someone adds you. Simply ignore it and the request will go away.<\/li>\n
  2. A message can be 32,767 characters long.<\/li>\n
  3. You can change your Gtalk chat name on the Account Page<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  4. Adding a web URL in a custom message will make it clickable.<\/li>\n
  5. Gtalk supports the following emoticons, and they appear in blue: \n :-| :-O :-x :-P :-D ;-) :-( :| :O :x :P :D :) :( ;-| ;-O ;-x ;-P ;-D ;-) ;-( ;| ;O ;x ;P ;D ;) ;( B-| B-O B-x B-P B-D B-) B-( B'( BO Bx BD B) B( B) <\/code> <\/li>\n

    Here\u2019s a complete list of what you can do with Gtalk in the run command prompt:<\/p>\n

    \"C:\\Program Files\\Google\\Google Talk\\googletalk.exe\" \/parameter<\/em> <\/code><\/p>\n

      \n
    • \/nomutex<\/em>: Open more than one Gtalk instance.<\/li>\n
    • \/autostart<\/em>: Check the registry settings to see if Gtalk needs to be started. If the \u201cStart automatically with Windows\u201d option is unchecked, it won\u2019t start.<\/li>\n
    • \/forcestart<\/em>: Similar to \/autostart, but forces Gtalk to start.<\/li>\n
    • \/S upgrade<\/em>: Used when upgrading Google Talk.<\/li>\n
    • \/register<\/em>: Registers Google Talk in the registry, including the Gmail Compose method.<\/li>\n
    • \/checkupdate<\/em>: Check for newer versions.<\/li>\n
    • \/plaintextauth<\/em>: Uses plain authentication mechanism instead of Google\u2019s GAIA mechanism. Used for testing the plain method on Google\u2019s servers.<\/li>\n
    • \/nogaiaauth<\/em>: Disables the GAIA authentication method. The same as above.<\/li>\n
    • \/factoryreset<\/em>: Resets settings back to default.<\/li>\n
    • \/gaiaserver servername.com<\/em>: Uses a different GAIA server to connect to Google Talk. Used for debugging purposes only; there are no other known GAIA servers.<\/li>\n
    • \/mailto email@host.com<\/em>: Send an email with Gmail.<\/li>\n
    • \/diag<\/em>: Start Google Talk in diagnostic mode.<\/li>\n
    • \/log<\/em>: Probably related to diagnostic logging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
