This is what we will be creating with this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/41-nicest-photoshop-photo-effects-photoshop-tutorials\/\">Photoshop tutorial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll start with a selection exercise with the old car, then we\u2019ll add flying rocks with tower and wires. Then, we will add in three birds, including one that is in mid-motion. We will also be utilizing some free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/download-free-stl-3d-models\/\">3D render<\/a> and fractal packs to enhance the abstract aspect of the illustration. Check that the <strong>Contiguous<\/strong> option is ticked. Click on the white background using the <strong>Magic Wand tool<\/strong> to select the background.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-01.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"474\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 2<\/h2>\n<p>You will notice that in some areas the selection edge is leaking because of the color range\u2019s similarity. We need to use the  Quick Mask Mode to smooth out these selection edges.<\/p>\n<p>Change to <strong>Quick Mask<\/strong> mode by clicking the button in the toolbar. The unselected areas are now shown in transparent red.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-02.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"465\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 3<\/h2>\n<p>To fix this selection manually, we will draw the selection path using the <strong>Pen<\/strong> tool. Set <strong>Pen<\/strong> mode to <strong>Path<\/strong>, then start adding selection points covering the car\u2019s roof.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-03.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"378\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 4<\/h2>\n<p>Add another selection path covering the car\u2019s emblem.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-04.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"513\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 5<\/h2>\n<p>Next, add selection paths covering the right headlight and its surroundings.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-05.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"534\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 6<\/h2>\n<p>Right click on one of the paths and select <strong> Make Selection<\/strong> from the pop-up menu.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-06.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"486\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 7<\/h2>\n<p>Click <strong>OK<\/strong> when the Make Selection dialog appears. This will convert our paths into selection marquee.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-07.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"447\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 8<\/h2>\n<p>Fill selected areas with <strong>Black<\/strong>. Do this by going to <strong>Edit<\/strong>&gt; <strong>Fill<\/strong> menu, select Use: <strong>Black<\/strong>. Click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-08.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"490\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 9<\/h2>\n<p>Press <strong>Ctrl+D<\/strong> to deselect. Now the car is selected, press <strong>Ctrl+C<\/strong> to copy it.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-10.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"468\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 11<\/h2>\n<p>Press <strong>Ctrl+N <\/strong>to create new file, set the Width: <strong>1600<\/strong> pixels and Height: <strong>1142<\/strong> pixels. Click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-11.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"439\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 12<\/h2>\n<p>Press <strong>Ctrl+V<\/strong> to paste the old car we copied previously. Use the <strong>free transform<\/strong> command to adjust the car size and position.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-12.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"469\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 13: Adding the Background<\/h2>\n<p>Open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freeimages.com\/photo\/1290355\" rel=\"nofollow\">sky photo<\/a>. Copy and paste it into our document. Place sky layer below car layer.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-13.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"506\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 14<\/h2>\n<p>Fill the background layer with <strong>blue<\/strong> <strong>(#15487d). <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-14.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"520\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 15<\/h2>\n<p>Add a layer mask for the sky layer. Use the linear gradient tool to draw a diagonal gradient (black to white) from  bottom left to top right.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-15.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"590\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 16<\/h2>\n<p>Add a new layer. Use the linear gradient tool to draw a linear gradient diagonally similar to the previous step.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-16.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"526\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 17<\/h2>\n<p>Change the current layer blend mode to <strong>Soft Light<\/strong>. This will darken the  color of the sky a bit.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-17.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"572\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 18<\/h2>\n<p>Add one more new layer, fill it with a linear gradient diagonally like the previous step but this time, make the black colored portion bigger.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-18.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"508\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 19<\/h2>\n<p>Set the current layer blend mode to <strong>Screen<\/strong>. The sky\u2019s top right corner is now brighter.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-19.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"381\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 20<\/h2>\n<p>Go back to the car layer to remove unecessary objects below the old car. First, select it using the <strong>Polygonal Lasso<\/strong> tool, press <strong>Delete<\/strong> to clear the selected area. Press <strong>Ctrl+D<\/strong> to deselect.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-20.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"465\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 21<\/h2>\n<p>Press <strong>Ctrl+J<\/strong> to duplicate the car layer. Go to <strong>Filter<\/strong>&gt; <strong>Other<\/strong>&gt; <strong>High Pass<\/strong>. Set the <strong>Radius<\/strong> value around 1.0 Pixels. Click <strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-21.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"600\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 22<\/h2>\n<p>Change the current layer blend mode to <strong>Overlay<\/strong>. This will increase the car detail and make it look sharper.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-22.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"574\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 23<\/h2>\n<p>Within the <strong>Layer<\/strong> panel, right click the current layer and select <strong>Merge Down<\/strong>. This will merge both car and car copy layer.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-23.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"351\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 24<\/h2>\n<p>Press <strong>Ctrl+M <\/strong>to call the <strong>Curves<\/strong> command. Select Preset: <strong>Strong Contrast<\/strong>, click <strong>OK<\/strong> to apply.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-24.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"522\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 25<\/h2>\n<p>Go to <strong>Image<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Adjustment<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Vibrance<\/strong>. Increase Vibrance value to<strong> +10<\/strong>0 and Saturation: <strong>+10<\/strong>. Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to apply Vibrance command. The Car now looks more colorful and shiny.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-25.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"512\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 26: Adding the Flying Rocks<\/h2>\n<p>Open the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freeimages.com\/photo\/626210\" rel=\"nofollow\">cliff image<\/a>; we\u2019re going to use it as our flying rock island. First, select the area you want  with the <strong>Polygonal Lasso<\/strong> tool. Press <strong>Ctrl+C<\/strong> to copy the selected area.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-26.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"600\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 27<\/h2>\n<p>Go back to our document, press <strong>Ctrl+V<\/strong> to paste. Make the rock smaller, press <strong>Ctrl+T<\/strong> to resize, and move its position to the car\u2019s left side. Hit <strong>Enter<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-27.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"420\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 28<\/h2>\n<p>Make the bottom side of the rock smaller.  Do this by drawing a selection with the <strong>Polygonal Lasso<\/strong> tool, then press <strong>Delete<\/strong> to erase. Deselect with <strong>Ctrl+D.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-28.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"372\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 29<\/h2>\n<p>Create a new selection on the  bottom left area with the <strong>Polygonal Lasso<\/strong> tool. Simply drag the selected area with the <strong>Move<\/strong> tool to move it.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-29.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"354\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 30<\/h2>\n<p>Next, we want to make the rock look 3D. Use the <strong>Burn<\/strong> tool to darken the rock\u2019s edge.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-30.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"453\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 31<\/h2>\n<p>Then, use the <strong>Dodge<\/strong> tool to brighten the rock\u2019s top edge.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-31.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"462\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 32<\/h2>\n<p>Grab the <strong>Sponge<\/strong> tool, set the mode to <strong>Saturate<\/strong>. Use the sponge tool to saturate the rock\u2019s color.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-32.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"441\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 33<\/h2>\n<p>Go back to the <strong>Burn<\/strong> tool, but this time <strong>turn off the Protect Tones<\/strong> option. Use the <strong>Burn<\/strong> tool to darken the rock\u2019s edges once more until they turn black.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-33.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"438\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 34: Adding the Tower<\/h2>\n<p>Open the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freeimages.com\/photo\/1331251\" rel=\"nofollow\">tower<\/a> picture. Go to <strong>Select<\/strong>&gt; <strong>Color Range<\/strong> menu. Click on any part of the tower to sample its color. Increase the <strong>Fuzziness<\/strong> value until the overall tower shape is selected. Click <strong>OK<\/strong> to apply selection. Copy selected tower with <strong>Ctrl+C.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-34.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"600\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 35<\/h2>\n<p>Paste the tower by pressing <strong>Ctrl+V.<\/strong> Place the tower layer behind the flying rock layer. Press <strong>Ctrl+T<\/strong> for free transform and make the tower smaller, so it can \u2018stand\u2019 on top of the flying rock.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-35.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 36<\/h2>\n<p>Delete the  unecessary tower cable wires using the hard round <strong>Eraser<\/strong> tool. Change tower layer blend mode to <strong>Multiply<\/strong>. We have ourselves our first flying rock.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-36.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"564\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 37<\/h2>\n<p>Now we need another flying rock with its own tower on the bright side (right side) of the car. You can repeat steps 26 to 36 to add the second flying rock and tower to the right side of the document or you can duplicate both the flying rock and tower layers by selecting the layers and pressing Ctrl+J.<\/p>\n<p>Make the second rock-tower smaller, and move it to the right.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-37.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"420\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 38: Drawing the Cables<\/h2>\n<p>Add a new layer, name it \u2018cables\u2019. Set the foreground color to <strong>Black<\/strong>, and then press F5 to show the <strong>Brush<\/strong> Panel. Set the brush Size: <strong>1 px<\/strong>, Hardness <strong>100%<\/strong> and Spacing: <strong>1%<\/strong>. We will use this brush to draw new cable wires between the two towers.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-38.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"600\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 39<\/h2>\n<p>Shift to the <strong>Pen<\/strong> tool, set the <strong>Pen<\/strong> mode to <strong>path<\/strong>, then draw a curve path connecting both left and right towers.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/photo-manipulation-making-car-fly\/step-39.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"432\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Step 40<\/h2>\n<p>Right click the path using the <strong>Pen<\/strong> tool, select <strong>Stroke Path<\/strong> menu. Inside Stroke Path dialog, select Tool: <strong>Brush<\/strong> and click <strong>OK<\/strong>.
