Did you ever struggle trying to make your design work for different versions of Internet Explorer? You had to use many tools and tricks, right? Good news! With Windows 10, Microsoft has finally replaced the old browser.<\/p>\n

Now, we have a brand new browser called Microsoft Edge<\/a>. Even though its logo looks a lot like the old one, our tests show that Edge is modern and fast.<\/p>\n

In this article, we\u2019ll explore some of its simple and useful features.<\/p>\n

1. Search Easily with Cortana<\/h2>\n

Cortana is the new helpful assistant for Windows 10. You can use it from the Start menu. Plus, it\u2019s now part of Microsoft Edge to help with quick online searches.<\/p>\n

To use this, turn on Cortana in your system settings. Also, make sure the \u201cLet Cortana assist me in Microsoft Edge<\/strong>\u201d option is switched on in Advanced Settings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Cortana uses the Bing search engine. You\u2019ll know she\u2019s there when you see two circles on the left side<\/strong> of your screen. The color of these circles depends on your chosen theme in Windows 10.<\/p>\n

How to Use Cortana<\/h3>\n

Cortana understands everyday language. Right now, she responds to specific search words, but she\u2019ll get smarter over time.<\/p>\n

For example, if you type \u201cweather\u201d, she displays the current weather for your location with a clear weather icon.<\/p>\n

Need to check the value of foreign money in your own currency? Cortana can do that quickly. She can also act like a dictionary. Just type \u201cdefine\u201d followed by any word you want to understand better. Plus, she\u2019s handy for converting time zones or checking a flight\u2019s status.<\/p>\n

2. Draw Directly on a Web Page<\/h2>\n

Designers and creatives, this is for you! With Microsoft Edge, you can now add notes directly on a web page<\/strong>. Just click the \u201cMake a Web Note<\/strong>\u201d button at the top (it looks like a paper and pen). When you see the purple toolbar, you can start drawing.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll find a pen, a highlighter, an eraser, a text note, and a clipping tool. Pick your favorite colors and brush sizes. The text notes let you add neat text comments on the page.<\/p>\n

Done with your notes? You can save them<\/strong> for later. Save them in your OneNote account, which is part of Microsoft Office. If you don\u2019t have Office, you can use Office Online. Or, simply save your notes to your \u201cFavorites\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cReading List\u201d<\/strong> folder.<\/p>\n

3. Read Without Interruptions<\/h2>\n

Ever get bothered by flashing ads or comment sections when reading online? Microsoft Edge\u2019s \u201cReading View<\/strong>\u201d can help.<\/p>\n

This feature works mainly on individual articles<\/strong>, not on home or category pages.<\/p>\n

It gives a clean, reader-friendly layout, similar to RSS readers. One thing to note: it\u2019s so clean that it might hide images<\/strong> too. So, think twice before using it on sites where pictures are key (like hongkiat.com).<\/p>\n

If you just want to read without distractions, this is perfect. Once done, simply click the link at the top to go back to the regular view.<\/p>\n

4. Make a Simple Reading List<\/h2>\n

With Microsoft Edge\u2019s \u201cReading List<\/strong>\u201c, you get a basic reading list manager right in the browser. It\u2019s simpler than apps like Pocket and doesn\u2019t let you add tags. But it\u2019s built-in, so you don\u2019t need a separate app.<\/p>\n

To add a page to your Reading List, click the Favorites star icon at the top, then pick the \u201cReading List\u201d tab.<\/p>\n

Find your Reading List by clicking the Hub icon (three lines) at the top. Your saved articles will be listed, with the most recent one shown larger at the top. If you want, you can pin the Reading List<\/strong> so it stays visible as you browse.<\/p>\n

5. Choose Your Theme: Dark or Light<\/h2>\n

Microsoft now lets you pick a theme<\/strong> for your browser. It\u2019s a small change; right now, there are only two themes for Edge: light and dark. But it\u2019s a step showing Microsoft cares about user preferences.<\/p>\n

Switch themes by clicking the \u201cMore actions\u2026\u201d dots at the top, then \u201cSettings\u201d. The theme switcher is easy to find at the top.<\/p>\n

Edge comes with a handy Share Panel, making it simple to share what you find<\/strong> online. Click the Share icon at the top (it looks like 3 circles connected by arcs). This panel shows the sharing apps you\u2019ve set up.<\/p>\n

Add more sharing options by getting new apps from the Windows Store. The Share Panel\u2019s color will match your chosen theme.<\/p>\n

7. Quickly Add Web Pages to Start<\/h2>\n

Want quick access to your favorite sites? Use the \u201cPin to Start<\/strong>\u201d feature. It lets you add web pages to your Start Menu<\/strong>. Find it in the \u201cMore actions\u201d menu (the 3 dots) at the top left.<\/p>\n

Choose this, and the current page becomes a live tile on your Start menu. Below, see the two pages I added. They\u2019re the blue tiles with the white Edge logo.<\/p>\n

8. Dive Into Your Site\u2019s Speed<\/h2>\n

Edge\u2019s Developer Tools got a makeover and some added features. Access them with F12, as in Internet Explorer, or through the \u201cMore actions\u201d menu.<\/p>\n

The Unified Performance Profiler<\/strong> is under the \u201cPerformance\u201d tab. It helps you understand what\u2019s slowing your site down<\/strong>. In Edge, tools from Internet Explorer come together for a streamlined developer experience.<\/p>\n

Other developer updates include SASS & LESS source maps, a new Network tool, and Debugger improvements like XHR breakpoints.<\/p>\n

9. Stay Protected from Risky Extensions<\/h2>\n

Microsoft Edge skips extensions known for risks, like ActiveX, VML, and VB scripts. It focuses on safer options like JavaScript<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If your website still uses ActiveX, consider updating to HTML5 for Edge compatibility.<\/p>\n

Edge packs additional security features<\/strong>, such as the Edge Login Process, Sandboxing, and an enhanced Microsoft SmartScreen. Look for settings like Smart Screen Filtering<\/strong> and cookie management<\/strong> in the Advanced Settings.<\/p>\n
