Chrome named the option <strong>Incognito Mode<\/strong>, Firefox and Safari call it <strong>Private Browsing<\/strong>, while IE calls it <strong>InPrivate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The descriptions give you the impression that if you don\u2019t want your browsing to be recorded, you should switch to this mode and you should be safe. However, <strong>any software is only as safe as the person who\u2019s using it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this article is to explain <strong>what private browsing actually helps with<\/strong> (you might be surprised by some of the revelations) and <strong>how you can expand the security possibilities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Private Browsing Defined<\/h2>\n<p>Before I start describing what your private browser does not do, let\u2019s quickly review <strong>what the regular browsers actually do when you\u2019re surfing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Record what websites you visited to help you find the same URLs again and recall previously visited sites<\/li>\n<li>Manage (create, store, open) cookies to personalize your browsing experience, let you stay logged in, help you with auto-completed forms<\/li>\n<li>Let installed extensions modify and record what shows when and how<\/li>\n<li>Allow search engines to record your search history<\/li>\n<li>Allow ad engines to record your browsing details and to store information on which ads you click on<\/li>\n<li>Allow social engines to record which sites you visit while staying logged on at their site<\/li>\n<li>Allow your internet service provider to track pages you visit<\/li>\n<li>Allow anyone with proper (or illegal) access to your hard drive or cloud storage to find and do whatever with your files<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s take a look at <strong>what to expect from private browsing<\/strong>, no matter which browser you use:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Private browsing discards browsing history while in incognito mode, so your movement will not be recorded in your browser history.<\/li>\n<li>Your cookies, although created, will be deleted as soon as you close a private window, so you\u2019ll be able to utilize the possibility of those cookies only while the original window\/tab is still open.<\/li>\n<li>Some extensions\/plugins will be disabled if their developer decided on that on your behalf.<\/li>\n<li>Private browser windows have access to previously stored data like saved passwords, browsing history that are acquired though non-private browsing. The data is still accessible in private mode.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That\u2019s about it. Now, if you compare the list to the one before about who stores data on your online activity, you\u2019ll see that a lot of tracking points are still active.<\/p>\n<h2>Wait, What Tracking Points?<\/h2>\n<p>Just in case you didn\u2019t know: basically <strong>every single site knows and records your actions on that particular site<\/strong>. What\u2019s more, on most places you\u2019ll have more than just one party eyeing you.<\/p>\n<p>But why track me, you ask. Here are some reasons (and the parties most likely responsible):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Usually some kind of analytics software\/plugin\/engine (most often <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com.my\/analytics\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Analytics<\/a>) want to know how much time is spent by how many people on a site<\/li>\n<li>They want to be able to advertise their services to you even after you\u2019d left their site (via <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com.my\/adwords\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Google AdWords<\/a> and\/or Facebook advertising and\/or any other integrated social engines)<\/li>\n<li>They want to be able to provide more personalized services based on your previous actions on the site, such as recommended articles or videos (so most websites that make you log in for all or certain services are \u2018guilty\u2019 of such tracking)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For a less technical but way funnier (yet sadly true) explanation, here\u2019s a summary of your online privacy.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/private-browsing\/privacy.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" alt=\"Online privacy explained\" title=\"Online privacy explained\"><\/figure>\n<p>You should also know that your Internet Service Provider will also <strong>record your online behavior regardless of your browser settings <\/strong>for<strong> security and statistic purposes<\/strong>. I hope you\u2019re starting to see why private browsing is <em>not<\/em> the real solution for true privacy.<\/p>\n<h2>So What Can You Use Private Browsing For?<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Make your browser forget your logins<\/h3>\n<p>Since cookies are unrecognized in private mode, you can log in to any site, say your <strong>Facebook or an email service in private mode and you don<\/strong>\u2018t have to worry that your account will stay active for others <strong>once you\u2019re finished browsing <\/strong>and<strong> closed the window<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This is an excellent feature if you\u2019re using a shared computer\/terminal that is probably going to be used after you\u2019d finished, e.g. at school or at an internet cafe.<\/p>\n<p>For the same reason I suggest private browsing if you\u2019re using someone else\u2019s private computer. For one, you\u2019re making sure the <strong>browser doesn\u2019t remember your credentials<\/strong> \u2013 and also, you\u2019re making it <strong>more convenient for the other person<\/strong> to get back to their account once you\u2019ve finished.<\/p>\n<h3>2. Log in with multiple accounts at the same time<\/h3>\n<p>Most login-required services <strong>do not share Google Accounts\u2019 possibility to handle multiple accounts at the same time<\/strong> \u2013 in this case, private browsing is your solution. After you\u2019ve logged in to any of your accounts in a regular or private window, open a new private window and you\u2019ll see that the same service asks for login credentials again. A new tab probably won\u2019t do the trick as your cookies most probably haven\u2019t been deleted yet.<\/p>\n<p>Hint: Developers also find his feature useful when <strong>testing different user roles<\/strong> on a site they\u2019re working on \u2013 this way they needn\u2019t have any plugins or extensions just to test multiple accounts.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Visiting sites after which you\u2019d be clearing your browsing history<\/h3>\n<p>For some reason or another, most people on the Internet have probably deleted their browsing history at least a couple of times.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easier to activate private browsing before you visit those not-to-be-remembered sites than it is to remember to clear the browsing history when you\u2019re finished. Especially if your surfing is interrupted suddenly (for the sake of an appropriate example, let\u2019s say your teacher or boss enters the room where you\u2019re not supposed to use the Internet at all).<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/private-browsing\/3.jpg\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" alt=\"private\"><\/figure>\n<h2>So how can I stay hidden?<\/h2>\n<p>For the truly paranoid, a good, old fashioned nomadic lifestyle without the Internet is a great idea. Thankfully though, there are options for the  rest of us sane people as well.<\/p>\n<h3>Just Log Out<\/h3>\n<p>The easiest (and least effective) is to <strong>always log out of any accounts<\/strong> (especially social networks and email providers) before closing the services\u2019 websites. This way they might not be able to track your steps.<\/p>\n<h3>Do Not Track<\/h3>\n<p>Another easily achieved solution would be turning on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.mozilla.org\/kb\/how-do-i-stop-websites-tracking-me\" rel=\"noopener\">Do Not Track<\/a> on Firefox (as explained <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/do-not-track\/\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>). This feature lets you <strong>express a preference not to be tracked by websites<\/strong>. When the feature is enabled, Firefox will tell advertising networks and other websites and applications that you want to opt-out of tracking for purposes like behavioral advertising. It should be noted though that nothing and nobody compels these sites to actually honor your wish, although Firefox says that companies are starting to support this feature.<\/p>\n<h3>Use Another Browser<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re concerned with your searches being tracked, give <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/duckduckgo.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">DuckDuckGo<\/a> a chance. Their vision is simple: \u201cTo give you great search results without tracking you.\u201d It\u2019s awesome.<\/p>\n<p>If you want a truly secure browser that helps obfuscate you from all sites you visit (instead of just hiding your steps locally), you should check out <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/introductions-to-bitcoins-tor-network\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Tor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Hide!<\/h3>\n<p>Finally, if you want to stay as hidden as possible and willing to take a few extra steps, you should consider using <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anonymizer.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Anonymizer<\/a> to hide your IP address.<\/p>\n<p>Or you might opt for the whole deal and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/vpn-protocols\/\" rel=\"noopener\">install a Virtual Private Network<\/a>, such as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pango.co\" rel=\"noopener\">AnchorFree<\/a>. They secure your browsing session, block malware, enable you to access any site anywhere and also protect your IP address. It doesn\u2019t really get any more secure than that.
