Add Relevant Upsells <\/h2>\n<p>First of all, an upsell is a sales technique where you <strong>offer your customers the chance to purchase upgrades<\/strong> (better features, better specifications, more volume) or to <strong>get the more expensive version<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>of what they\u2019re buying, so you can maximize the value of their purchase (higher price).<\/p>\n<p>In order to add relevant upsells into your store, there are four main things you need to do:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make a list of all the products you sell.<\/li>\n<li>Separate those products into two lists: the <em>regular<\/em> ones and the <em>expensive<\/em> ones<\/li>\n<li>Tie the better products with the regular ones<\/li>\n<li>Talk to a developer to add a section in your product page, where you show your upsells<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Depending on which e-Commerce platform you use, you can skip all those steps and add a plugin that automatically gets it done for you.<\/p>\n<p>For example: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.shopify.com\/product-upsell\">Product Upsell<\/a> by Shopify, or OpenCart\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.opencart.com\/index.php?route=marketplace\/extension\/info&extension_id=28902&filter_member=e-intelligence\">Also Bought<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Upsell In Action<\/h3>\n<p>As always, the best way to see an upsell in action is to go to the king of e-Commerce sites: <strong>Amazon<\/strong>. Let\u2019s say you want to buy a great DSLR camera. You <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B00RUBJKU8\">select<\/a> the Nikon D5500 as a great option to buy. This is what you\u2019ll see at first.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/boosting-online-sales-revenue\/upsell-01.jpg\" alt=\"upsell image 01\" width=\"962\" height=\"413\"><\/figure>\n<p>So you\u2019ve found what you\u2019re looking for but wait, if you scroll down, you\u2019ll see the following upsells:<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/boosting-online-sales-revenue\/upsell-02.jpg\" alt=\"upsell image 01\" width=\"1330\" height=\"292\"><\/figure>\n<p>And more:<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/boosting-online-sales-revenue\/upsell-03.jpg\" alt=\"upsell image 01\" width=\"1340\" height=\"270\"><\/figure>\n<p>In these two cases you\u2019ll notice that <strong>not every product is more expensive<\/strong>. In some cases, they even add cross-sells (see next point). That\u2019s fine. What this says is you don\u2019t have to show your upsells and cross-sells separately; you can use them together to have a bigger impact in your sales.<\/p>\n<p>The key is that <strong>you must offer items that can add value or improve the user experience<\/strong> of your client.<\/p>\n<h3>Why This Is Simple<\/h3>\n<p>Because once you add your upsells to your website, it\u2019s just a matter of waiting for them to take effect. Of course, you need to check daily or weekly how they\u2019re performing. Also, the best thing you could do before launching your upsells is <strong>testing them first<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Create an A\/B test, where in the A version your store is the same as usual, and where the B has the upsells. Add Timely Cross-sells <\/h2>\n<p>If upsells represent upgrades and more expensive versions of a product a customer is buying, a cross-sell is <strong>giving options for add-ons<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the previous example I showed you how Amazon tries to sell you other expensive items related to the one you wanted to buy at first. But as you saw, they don\u2019t always show more expensive items next to your desired product. Sometimes they show other <strong>similar items<\/strong> \u2013 that\u2019s <strong>cross-selling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the previous case, cross-sells for the Nikon D5500 are lenses, bags and flashes, among other accessories. Cross-selling works so good for Amazon that it\u2019s said it\u2019s responsible of <strong>35% of their e-Commerce revenue <\/strong>back in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>Adding cross-sells to a store is a more difficult process than adding upsells, because <strong>there are many ways to choose what products to cross-sell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, an online store that sells sneakers has many cross-selling options to choose from, such as socks, laces, jeans, other sneakers from the same brand, similar sneakers from other brands.<\/p>\n<p>However, just because it\u2019s hard it does not mean you can\u2019t do it. If you want to add cross-sells to your store, I\u2019ll give you two recommendations:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Take the time to adapt the upselling steps I previously mentioned to cross-selling (be patient) <\/li>\n<li>Depending on the e-Commerce platform of choice, buy and install a cross-selling plugin for instance:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.shopify.com\/cross-sell\">Cross-Sell<\/a> by Shopify<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/addons.prestashop.com\/en\/cross-selling-product-bundles\/2412-cross-selling-on-cart-and-cross-selling-on-product.html\">Cross Selling on Cart<\/a> by Prestashop<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/autorespondermax.com\/\">AutoResponder Max<\/a> by Volusion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Similarly to upselling, the key to effective cross-sells is <strong>providing value to the customer\u2019s life<\/strong> \u2013 think about the customer first before suggesting a cross-sell.<\/p>\n<h3>Why This Is Simple<\/h3>\n<p>Because cross-selling has shown its effectiveness in many companies, including Amazon. Also, just as with Upselling, once you set up your cross-sells, there\u2019s nothing much to do except to analyze its impact on your company\u2019s revenue. If it goes up, <em>it works<\/em>. Define Your Best-Selling Products <\/h2>\n<p>Do you really know which your best selling products are? You may think this is an obvious thing, but it\u2019s usually not. Knowing your best sellers is key, because it helps you understand your customers better, and most importantly, it allows you to know what you should be selling more of.<\/p>\n<p>To learn which are your best selling products, access your Google Analytics account, and go to <strong>Conversions &gt; e-Commerce &gt; Product Performance<\/strong>. In that report, you can choose to sort your products by <strong>units sold <\/strong>and <strong>revenue<\/strong>, among other metrics.<\/p>\n<p>Once you know which your best selling products are, it\u2019s just a matter of selling more of them, either by setting up paid ads, upsell and cross-selling them, among other strategies.<\/p>\n<h3>Why This Is Simple<\/h3>\n<p>Because knowing what is selling the most is the best way to know what you <strong>should keep selling<\/strong>. Test Your CTA<\/h2>\n<p>Testing is a great way to increase revenue because it takes a specific element of a page, and it shows if a change in that element can help you increase your conversion rates. If it does, you get an increase in your revenue. If you don\u2019t, well, you don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>You can test many elements of a page, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your site structure <\/li>\n<li>Your product page structure <\/li>\n<li>Your checkout process <\/li>\n<li>Your product\u2019s copy <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, I say, to test specifically your <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/call-to-action-button-templates\/\" rel=\"noopener\">call-to-actions<\/a> (i.e. the buttons that your customers click when they want to buy your products) because it\u2019s the simplest thing you can test that can help you increase your revenue. Also, testing your call-to-actions (aka. First and foremost, develop a hypothesis that you want to test, like \u201cI think changing the CTA\u2019s color to blue will increase its contrast, which will increase the CTR (click-through rate).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>2. Construct a plan of action to test those hypotheses, in which you define what tasks need to be done for your tests to take effect. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Step 1: Sign up for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.optimizely.com\/\">Optimizely<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Step 2: Develop the A\/B test in Optimizely.<\/li>\n<li>Step 3: Run the test for 2 weeks, or until <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/cro-statistics-how-to-avoid-reporting-bad-data\">statistical significance is reached<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Step 4: Analyze results.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3. Run the test.<\/p>\n<p>4. Finally, analyze the results. If the newer version (the B version) increased your conversion rates, then keep it. If not, reject it.<\/p>\n<p>(Even though testing is a complex topic, I don\u2019t want to make things more complicated than they are. Of course, tests can fail, so if they do, don\u2019t panic. In fact, I\u2019d say most of them will, especially when you first start. Add Better Product Images <\/h2>\n<p>What\u2019s the one big advantage offline shopping has over its online counterpart? The product\u2019s touch and feel .<\/p>\n<p>If I had to choose one serious advantage of offline shopping it is that I can see, feel, touch, smell (yeah, it sounds weird, but hey, I don\u2019t judge) and even try the products on.<\/p>\n<p>The closest thing to that experience online are the <strong>product\u2019s pictures<\/strong> and things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Different angles <\/li>\n<li>Zoom in <\/li>\n<li>Product test, or in action<\/li>\n<li>A video <\/li>\n<li>A 360 degree view of the product <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, don\u2019t forget to make the images <strong>look professional<\/strong>. Things like lighting, filters and custom touches make a huge difference when it comes to making a product look good. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to always err on the side of choosing professional photographs instead of taking a DIY solution.<\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t afford a professional photographer, try what Richard Lazazzera did with his own <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.abetterlemonadestand.com\/thegreatbuild-inside-6-month-old-ecommerce-business\/\">store<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Why This Is Simple<\/h3>\n<p>Adding extra images (2 or 3) can give your customer the final push to buy a product. Every time you add or change something to your store, think about how this will affect your customer. Competing with offline stores is hard.
