Check out our latest tutorial on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/run-localhost-https\/\">how to enable HTTPS on localhost<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Having an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/go\/nc-ssl\">SSL<\/a> (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/ssl-certs-guide\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Socket Secure Layer<\/a>) installed is one way to secure your website. Basically, SSL will encrypt data transactions between the browser and the server. Thus, you would probably want to test your website in an SSL environment <strong>as early as during the development stages<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>URLs and other website assets such as CSS and JavaScript are pointed correctly via the <code>https<\/code> protocol. So, how do we enable SSL in our localhost? It will require some command lines, file modifications, configurations and a few more cumbersome steps. But <strong>let\u2019s bypass all that and use <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mamp.info\/de\/en\/mamp-pro\/\">MAMP Pro<\/a> instead<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Enabling the SSL<\/h2>\n<p>Launch MAMP, and create a VirtualHost with a custom domain; this domain can be set in an extension like <code>.dev<\/code> or <code>.local<\/code>. In this case, I\u2019ve created <code>www.hongkiat.dev<\/code> which is used to host <code>www.hongkiat.com<\/code> development.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/localhost-ssl-using-mamp\/ssl-virtualhost.jpg\" alt=\"ssl virtualhost\" width=\"600\" height=\"320\"><\/figure>\n<p>Each of the VirtualHost you create in MAMP will have individual options on which you can do some configurations.<\/p>\n<p>To enable SSL for the VirtualHost, go to the SSL tab and <strong>tick the SSL option<\/strong>. Afterwards, you would need to locate the SSL certificate files. If you have got one, locate and assign the files. If not, click the <span class=\"key\">Create self-signed certificate<\/span> button to let MAMP create the certificates for you.<\/p>\n<p>To create one, MAMP will ask you some information like the Country Code and State to assign in the certificate, like so:<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/localhost-ssl-using-mamp\/ssl-create.jpg\" alt=\"create ssl\" width=\"600\" height=\"320\"><\/figure>\n<p>Save the file in a proper folder, and SSL is set.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/localhost-ssl-using-mamp\/ssl-certificates.jpg\" alt=\"ssl certificate\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Make Chrome Trust Your Website<\/h2>\n<p>Once SSL is set, you should now be able to view your website through the <code>https<\/code> protocol. But hold on, instead, you see an error (like below) as the SSL certificate is not recognized by the browsers in this case, Chrome. <strong>Note<\/strong> that if you run WordPress-based websites, you would need to modify the <code>siteurl<\/code> and <code>home<\/code> entry from the <code>wp_options<\/code> table in the database.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/localhost-ssl-using-mamp\/ssl-error.jpg\" alt=\"ssl error\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"><\/figure>\n<p>Unless you have a trust issue with yourself, you could just go to the <strong>Advanced<\/strong> option and click <code>Proceed to {your website name}<\/code> to view your website.<\/p>\n<p>If you are annoyed with the red cross shown in Chrome, you would need to <em>force<\/em> Chrome to trust your generated certificate:<\/p>\n<p>First, Click that crossed-out padlock icon, and then click the <b>Certificate Information<\/b> link. Chrome will show you a popup with all the information of the SSL certificate assigned in the website. Drag-and-drop the Certificate icon onto your Desktop.<\/p>\n<p>If you running OS X, opening this certificate file will bring you to the Keychain Access app.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/localhost-ssl-using-mamp\/ssl-trust.jpg\" alt=\"ssl trust\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\"><\/figure>\n<p>And, as you might be expected, you should select <span class=\"key\">Always Trust<\/span>. Select your website certificate, then click the <strong>[i]<\/strong> button to reveal the details of the certificate <strong>Trust<\/strong> level. Within the <strong>Trust<\/strong> tab, you will see the option that says \u2018When using this certificate\u2019. The default value is set to \u2018Use Custom Settings\u2019 at this stage. Make your certificate be trusted, by setting this option to \u2018Always Trust\u2019; you will be prompted for your password once to update this setting.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/localhost-ssl-using-mamp\/ssl-always-trust.jpg\" alt=\"ssl always trust\" width=\"600\" height=\"360\"><\/figure>\n<p>We are all set. Reopen the website on Chrome and you should now see the green padlock.
