Ever had this experience where, after reading a bunch of blogging advice on the Internet, you just stare blankly at your computer screen and say: \u201cHuh?\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not that you didn\u2019t understand the advice.<\/strong> It\u2019s just that the so-called blogging \u201cexperts\u201d can\u2019t seem to agree on the do\u2019s and don\u2019ts of professional blogging<\/a>.<\/p>\n

One expert will say: \u201cBlog about what you love, be active on social media, and everything will fall into place!\u201d Another will say: \u201cNo, you don\u2019t need a blog; you need to do this and that instead.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not that conflicting opinions are bad, per se. It\u2019s good that a lot of people want to give a more rounded view on a subject like blogging. However, this can be confusing for you if you\u2019re still trying to get your feet wet<\/strong> in a pool as overcrowded as the blogosphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n

If reading two or more articles on the same blogging topic often makes you want to scratch your head, here are a few questions you can ask to decide<\/strong> whether an article is worth a click on, the \u201cBookmark\u201d button or the \u201cBack\u201d button.<\/p>\n

Is The Advice Evergreen?<\/h2>\n

\u201cEvergreen\u201d means that the advice will be just as applicable five, ten, or even twenty years from now<\/strong> as it is today. For example, Michael Poh\u2019s \u201cJournalism For Blogging: 6 Things to Consider<\/a>\u201d will always be timely, because it talks about basic but essential principles that every blogger should keep in mind if they want their content to be worthwhile \u2013 no matter the topic, target audience, and time period.<\/p>\n

Now, this is not to say that articles with a \u201ctrending now\u201d or \u201ctechnology\u201d element can\u2019t be evergreen. It\u2019s still possible for a piece that incorporates those elements to be evergreen, as long as it gives an insightful explanation<\/strong> on why those elements worked (or not) in the context of the article (e.g. how Flappy Bird became an overnight sensation before fizzling out, and what lessons developers and marketers alike can learn from it).<\/p>\n

Does The Author Provide Concrete Examples To Support Points?<\/h2>\n

Any \u201cexpert\u201d can say that \u201cblogging is a great way to make quick cash\u201d. From a common sense perspective, it\u2019s easy to believe that argument (which is quite questionable<\/a>, by the way). After all, you only need a computer, an Internet connection, and an ability to string words together to get a blog up and running, right?<\/p>\n

But, unless that \u201cexpert\u201d can provide substantial evidence<\/strong> (e.g. real-life success story) to prove that blogging is in the beginner mode of the money generating game<\/a>, it\u2019s best if you take that argument with a grain of salt.<\/p>\n

\"make-advice-work\"<\/figure>\n

Even if the \u201cexpert\u201d does have evidence, it\u2019s possible for this to be exaggerated \u2013 or worse, fabricated \u2013 due to the open nature of the Internet. If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of an author\u2019s evidence, it won\u2019t hurt to do a bit of background research<\/strong> (e.g. Googling the subject, browsing forums, asking your more knowledgeable and trustworthy colleagues) before you come to any definite conclusions.<\/p>\n

(On that note, if anyone claims to have a \u201cmagic pill\u201d to your blogging woes, be skeptical. Blogs require vision, dedication, and hard work to maintain<\/strong>, and anyone who says otherwise is probably trying to sell you snake oil. Probably.)<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the author\u2019s purpose for writing the article? <\/h2>\n

Anyone who talks about blogging online does so for a number of reasons, such as (1) a desire to inform<\/strong>; (2) a desire to entertain<\/strong>; (3) a desire to persuade<\/strong>; (4) a need to meet a specific daily\/weekly\/monthly quota of content<\/strong>; and (5) a need to promote a product or service<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The key is to identify which of these is the author\u2019s main<\/em> objective. Once you figure that out, you can decide for yourself whether the author\u2019s words are worth considering<\/strong> or not.<\/p>\n

\"purpose-of-writing\"<\/figure>\n

For example, a post on the \u201c20 Ways to Promote Your Blog\u201d may offer solid tips, but if it includes any promotion for products\/services, it may actually be an advertorial<\/a>. In case you decide to buy any of these products\/services, make sure you search for objective reviews<\/strong> on them first. After all, it\u2019s best to get your money\u2019s worth, right?<\/p>\n

Can You Make The Advice Work For You?<\/h2>\n

On the flip side, it\u2019s possible for an article like \u201cThe Ultimate Guide to Promoting Your Blog via E-Newsletter\u201d to be well-written, detailed, and insightful, yet still be \u201cbad\u201d. How?<\/p>\n

Simple: It\u2019s not (yet) applicable to you. You may already have a blog, but not enough subscribers to warrant the effort you need to put<\/strong> into crafting those newsletters.<\/p>\n

A few more words of (unsolicited) advice<\/h2>\n

The truth is, there\u2019s no such thing as \u201cgood\u201d or \u201cbad\u201d blogging advice, at least not in the strictest sense of those words.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s only advice that is prone to misinterpretation and misapplication<\/strong>. Whether the words of an \u201cexpert\u201d will affect you positively or negatively will depend on various factors, like where you want to go as a blogger<\/strong>, your perception of where you are vis-\u00e0-vis where you want to be, how realistic your expectations are of what it takes to get from point A to point B, and how \u201cexpert\u201d advice will fit in with all of that.<\/p>\n
