For example, browsers without support for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/css3-box-shadows-effects\/\">CSS3 Box Shadow<\/a> won\u2019t display the shadow, but this is acceptable <strong>as long as the content remains readable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, one feature you can\u2019t ignore is <strong>CSS3 Background Size<\/strong>. We can control the size of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/css-encoded-image\/\">background images<\/a> added through CSS using the new <code>background-size<\/code> property. We can specify the width and height in precise units and also make the background follow the container size using <code>cover<\/code> and <code>contain<\/code> values.<\/p>\n<p>The <code>cover<\/code> value fills the entire area of its container while <strong>maintaining proportional width and height<\/strong>. The <code>contain<\/code> value <strong>adjusts the background to fit within the container\u2019s width<\/strong>. This sometimes results in empty space when the container height exceeds the image height.<\/p>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Recommended Reading: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/box-sizing-polyfills\/\">How To Enable Box Sizing In Internet Explorer 7 [Quicktip]<\/a><\/p>\n<h2>1. Using CSS3 Background Size<\/h2>\n<p>Note that the new <code>background-size<\/code> property cannot be included within the <code>background<\/code> shorthand property. They must be declared separately, like so.<\/p>\n<pre>\n.container {\n    background: url('img\/image.jpg');\n    background-size: cover;\n}\n<\/pre>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/css-snippets-for-designers\/\">code snippet<\/a> above, we\u2019ve attached an image with a width of approximately 3000px. The background-size property we\u2019ve added will <strong>prevent the background image from overflowing the content<\/strong>. CSS3 Background Size in Internet Explorer<\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, this feature doesn\u2019t gracefully fall back in Internet Explorer 8 and below. <strong>If you use a very large image, it may overflow the container<\/strong>. Conversely, if you use a very small image, you\u2019ll end up with empty space within the container. Using the same example above, you\u2019ll get the following result in Internet Explorer 8-6.<\/p>\n<figure>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/css3-background-size-in-ie\/background-image-size-in-ie.jpg\">\n<\/figure>\n<p>Therefore, we need a polyfill that can replicate CSS3 Background Size functionality in Internet Explorer.<\/p>\n<h2>3. CSS3 Background Size Polyfill<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/louisremi\/background-size-polyfill\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">This polyfill<\/a>, developed by <strong>Louis-R\u00e9mi<\/strong>, replicates the behavior of the <code>background-size<\/code> property with <code>cover<\/code> and <code>contain<\/code> values. It comes in the form of an HTC file named <strong>backgroundsize.htc<\/strong> and an <strong>.htaccess<\/strong> file, which is required when serving pages from an Apache server to send the correct <strong>HTC mime-type<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>To use it, include the HTC file through Internet Explorer\u2019s <code>behavior<\/code> property, as follows.<\/p>\n<pre>\n.background-size {\n    width: 500px;\n    height: 320px;\n    background-image: url('img\/image.jpg');\n    background-size: cover;\n    -ms-behavior: url('http:\/\/example.com\/js\/backgroundsize.htc');\n}\n<\/pre>\n<p>If you\u2019re using an Apache server, place the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/guide-to-htaccess\/\">.htaccess<\/a> file in the server\u2019s root folder, or simply add this line to the existing .htaccess file if one exists:<\/p>\n<pre>\nAddType text\/x-component .htc\n<\/pre>\n<p>That\u2019s all there is to it. When you view the page in Internet Explorer and have set the <code>background-size<\/code> to <code>cover<\/code> as shown above, you\u2019ll see that the background image is now properly resized and fits proportionally within the container.
