Make Sure You Have The Rights To Your Work<\/h2>\n<p>First, you have to make sure you have <strong>legal permission to reproduce old client work<\/strong>. If you don\u2019t, either get it or skip that particular project. Even if you own certain reproduction rights, it doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/design-contract-clauses\/\" rel=\"noopener\">you have the right <\/a> to repurpose or even alter your own work.<\/p>\n<p>If someone has bought the exclusive rights to reproduce the work, then you are not allowed to do anything with it (however, I hope you got paid a whole lot of money for those rights).<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/monitize-old-designs\/copyright-rotection.jpg?newedit\" alt=\"copyright-rotection\" width=\"800\" height=\"487\"><\/figure>\n<p>This is where <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/freelance-contract-clauses\/\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>a good contract <\/strong><\/a><strong>comes in handy<\/strong>. You want to always be aware of exactly which rights you\u2019re giving over to your client, and which ones you\u2019d be better off retaining.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The fewer rights you need to give away, the better<\/strong>. Non-exclusive reproduction rights should be enough for the majority of client projects unless it\u2019s a logo or something specific to the company\u2019s brand.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Selling Prints<\/h2>\n<p>This is the most obvious course of action. Plenty of people enjoy purchasing prints of designs they like to decorate their homes and offices. If you have a style that grabs attention and your pieces would look good framed and hung up on a wall, then <strong>selling prints of your work<\/strong> is the way to go.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, printing on paper is just one way you can sell prints. There are <strong>many websites<\/strong> now that will <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/self-promotion-via-print\/\" rel=\"noopener\">print your design<\/a> on just about any type of merchandise, as well as handle the production and shipping for you, whether you want to print on a sticker sheet, a t-shirt, a coffee mug, or a throw pillow.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Licensing<\/h2>\n<p>This is potentially the most lucrative option, and \u2013 go figure \u2013 it\u2019s also the most difficult to do successfully. The basic idea behind licensing is: you <strong>find a company that\u2019s already manufacturing products<\/strong> that your designs would look good on, and convince them to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/handpicked-printed-brochures\/\" rel=\"noopener\">reproduce your designs<\/a> on those products.<\/p>\n<p>In exchange, you receive a percentage of the <strong>royalties,<\/strong> about 8 to 10 percent. With licensing, you make money every time your licensee sells a product with your design on it. Also, you don\u2019t have to deal with the hassle of manufacturing or fulfillment. The licensee handles all of that for you.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/monitize-old-designs\/lisensing-of-your-work.jpg?newedit\" alt=\"lisensing-of-your-work\" width=\"800\" height=\"458\"><\/figure>\n<p>In order to make any real money from licensing, you or your licensee will <strong>need to have some sort of brand recognition<\/strong>. If both of you are relatively unknown, you\u2019re going to have a difficult time making enough sales to cover the cost of production. Your licensee may decide that it\u2019s not worth the time and money to license your designs, and you will be dropped.<\/p>\n<p>To prevent that from happening, you need to do your part to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/marketing-yourself-leverage-weak-points\/\" rel=\"noopener\">help market<\/a><strong> your designs to your own platform<\/strong>. The more buzz you can create around your designs, the more excited people will be to purchase them.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Showing In Galleries<\/h2>\n<p>Now, you may be thinking \u201cwait a second, I\u2019m not some fine art painter who shows their work in galleries. I\u2019m a designer, darn it.\u201d But let me explain. Even if you\u2019re not an artist, some of your <strong>more artsy or conceptual design pieces can still appeal to gallery buyers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You never know what collectors will be willing to pay for. And who knows \u2013 you may find yourself in demand more for your \u201cart\u201d pieces than you were for your design services.
