Hook Them With The First Sentence<\/h2>\n<p>Admittedly, this is the hardest part of writing a blog post. That\u2019s because the first sentence should be able to reel in the reader, and at the same time, give them an idea what your post will be all about.<\/p>\n<p>You can start with a:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Thought-provoking question<\/strong> \u2013 \"Do you know what a blog post and a sandwich have in common?\"<\/li>\n<li><strong>Quote<\/strong> \u2013 \"Ernest Hemingway once said: \u2018There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.\u2019<\/li>\n<li><strong>Statistic<\/strong> \u2013 \"According to the Official Federation of Bloggers*, 99.9 percent of bloggers experience writer\u2019s block.\"<\/li>\n<li><strong>Story<\/strong> \u2013 \"The other day, I had a Newtonian experience. That is, an apple fell on my head.\"<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>*Disclaimer: This is a hypothetical example. As of this writing, the Official Federation of Bloggers doesn\u2019t exist. <\/em><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/writing-engaging-blog-posts\/hook-them-with-first-sentence.jpg\" alt=\"hook-them-with-first-sentence\" width=\"800\" height=\"614\"><\/figure>\n<h2>2. Make Every Word, Phrase & Sentence Count<\/h2>\n<p>Because <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media-network\/media-network-blog\/2012\/mar\/19\/attention-span-internet-consumer\">Internet users\u2019 attention spans are shrinking by the day<\/a>, you have to <strong>work harder to hold your readers\u2019 attention<\/strong> from the beginning until the end of your post. To do that, every word, phrase, sentence, and even punctuation mark must add something to your piece.<\/p>\n<p>A handy trick is to<strong> read your draft out loud<\/strong>. If it feels like you\u2019re explaining things too slowly, or you\u2019re falling asleep to your own voice (gasp!), you may need to <strong>edit the extraneous bits<\/strong>. Your draft could possibly feel \"incomplete\", in which case, you can insert additional information to<strong> clarify your thoughts <\/strong>or<strong> strengthen your arguments<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Shorten Your Sentences, If Possible<\/h2>\n<p>In relation to the tip, here\u2019s a rough guide to help you decide whether you should cut down a kilometric sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Do your eyes glaze over while reading a sentence? Do you read a sentence out loud, and lose your breath by the end of it? Well, you might not want to rely on that function too much. <strong>Readers hate it when you bombard them with highfalutin jargon. <\/strong>Not only do these words sour the reading experience, but they also make your blog post look stilted and pretentious.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of trying to sound \"smart\",<strong> try to sound sensible<\/strong>. Use words that best convey your idea and <strong>can be understood by the layman<\/strong>. For example, \"to utilize resources\" can be shortened as \"to use resources\".<\/p>\n<h2>5. Play With Analogies<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Blogging is like dating.<\/strong> It\u2019s not enough that you make a great impression on the first date. You also have to show, again and again on your following dates, that you\u2019re a person worth someone\u2019s time, commitment, and love.<\/p>\n<p>See what I did there?<\/p>\n<h2>6. Throw In A Few Pop Culture References<\/h2>\n<p>Pop culture references add flavor to your blog post. They give your readers the impression that <strong>you\u2019re relatable, and therefore likeable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That said, <strong>be mindful of your audience<\/strong> when using these references. Now, it\u2019s time to write the conclusion, which is just as hard to write as (if not harder than) the introduction. The easiest way out of your dilemma is to summarize all your points in the conclusion.
