Facebook buys WhatsApp ($19 billion)<\/h2>\n<p>For the ridiculous price of $19bil, Facebook bought more than just an app. Facebook got access to WhatsApp\u2019s <strong>450 million users<\/strong>, minus the 500,000 that have <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/whatsapp-lost-500000-users-to-telegram-but-most-others-seem-happy-to-stay#!xEqQI\">migrated to Telegram<\/a>, and the 200,000 to Threema, and <strong>countless other migrations<\/strong> that nonetheless aren\u2019t even touching the grand bulk of users sticking to WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/most-expensive-tech-acquisitions\/whatsapp-founder.jpg\" alt=\"whatsapp founder\" width=\"500\" height=\"311\"><\/figure>\n<p><small>Image Source: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/business\/companies\/article\/1432182\/how-facebook-ceo-mark-zuckerberg-courted-whatsapp-founder-jan\">scmp<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>If anything killed SMS, it was WhatsApp with its <strong>handy, dependable and professional approach<\/strong> to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/whatsapp-viber-wechat-comparison\/\" rel=\"noopener\">mobile messaging<\/a>, so much so that SingTel CEO is considering <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/singtel-chief-calls-for-right-to-charge-challengers-skype-and-whatsapp-20140225-33dmb.html\">charging<\/a> the likes of WhatsApp and Skype for the use of their networks.<\/p>\n<p>WhatsApp also spurred a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/whatsapp-alternatives\/\" rel=\"noopener\">motherlode of alternatives<\/a>, and many new ones are recently coming out from China to take a chunk of the mobile messaging market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Alternative purchase: <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2014\/02\/20\/tech\/facebook-whatsapp-19-billion\/\">The UN\u2019s aid budget for a year<\/a> ($13bil)<\/p>\n<h2>2. Google buys Motorola Mobility ($12.5 billion)<\/h2>\n<p>Before Facebook made the deal of the decade, Google held that crown with an acquisition of Motorola Mobility in 2011 (finalised in 2012) for $12.5 billion. From the deal, Google secured a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/motorola-sues-apple-for-patent-infringement-2010-10?IR=T\">bargaining chip<\/a> against Apple in the form of 17,000 patents including patents for wireless communication technologies.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/most-expensive-tech-acquisitions\/google-motorola.jpg\" alt=\"google motorola\" width=\"500\" height=\"301\"><\/figure>\n<p><small>Image Source: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sg.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/google-cuts-losses-motorola-sells-014941296--finance.html\">Yahoo! Finance<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>Earlier in mid-2011, Google had also acquired <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/applications\/google-acquires-1000-ibm-patents\/d\/d-id\/1099259?\">1000 IBM patents<\/a> mostly related to hardware but lost out on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.informationweek.com\/applications\/google-loses-nortel-patents-to-tech-titans\/d\/d-id\/1098684?\">6,000 patents<\/a> in <strong>telecom and networking patents<\/strong> from Nortel. Nortel had sold out to a group of tech companies including Apple and Microsoft, instead of only to Google, raking in <strong>$4.5 billion<\/strong> in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Google had since <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/finance\/business\/google-sells-motorola-to-lenovo-for-29b-after-buying-it-for-125b\/news-story\/60da245b2692fa4b810728802331c2ca\">sold off Motorola Home for $2.35 billion<\/a> and Motorola\u2019s smartphone division (plus 2,000 patents) to Lenovo for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/finance\/business\/google-sells-motorola-to-lenovo-for-29b-after-buying-it-for-125b\/news-story\/60da245b2692fa4b810728802331c2ca\">$2.91 billion<\/a> but in return had <strong>aided the <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/android-evolution\/\" rel=\"noopener\">growth of Android<\/a> at an unprecedented scale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Alternative purchase<\/strong>: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ibtimes.com\/forbes-finding-higgs-boson-cost-1325-billion-721503\">Finding The Higgs Boson<\/a> ($13.25 bil)<\/p>\n<h2>3. HP buys Autonomy ($10.3 billion)<\/h2>\n<p>After having bought Compaq for $17.6 billion in 2002, HP was on course to make another $10-billion sale with Autonomy, an enterprise software company, in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Later, near the end of 2012, HP admitted that they had <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/business\/2012\/12\/how-did-hp-lose-five-billion-dollars-through-bad-accounting.html\">overpaid for the company<\/a>, citing the reason being Autonomy had been cooking their books (which they denied).<\/p>\n<p>A writedown of $8.8 billion was reported, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424127887324352004578130712448913412\">$5 billion<\/a> of which they said was caused by the accounting discrepancies. HP executives <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424127887323635504578211743521976174\">reportedly knew<\/a> about the British software maker\u2019s inappropriate accounting activities yet <strong>did not inform the board<\/strong>, allowing the deal to slip through.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/most-expensive-tech-acquisitions\/hp-autonomy.jpg\" alt=\"HP Autonomy\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\"><\/figure>\n<p><small>Image Source: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/la-xpm-2013-jan-17-la-fi-tn-qa-meg-whitman-on-fixing-hp-and-autonomys-accounting-troubles-20130115-story.html\">LA Times<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>The CEO in charge, of the deal, Leo Apotheker, had since been sacked, and when Autonomy failed to reach revenue targets, its founder and CEO, Mike Lynch was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424127887323635504578211743521976174\">fired<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p>Lynch who had built Autonomy for 10 years, denied the allegations and instead puts the blame on petty infighting in HP. With everyone pointing fingers at everyone, the fight is <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/newsbysector\/epic\/audot\/10655860\/HPs-big-fight-with-Autonomy-is-just-starting.html\">far from over<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Alternative purchase<\/strong>: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thingsthatarecheaperthanwhatsapp.tumblr.com\/\">Clean water and sanitation for the for the world \u2013 ALL of it<\/a> ($10 bil)<\/p>\n<h2>4. Microsoft buys Skype ($8.5 billion)<\/h2>\n<p>Before Microsoft bought Skype in mid-2011, Skype was briefly owned by eBay in 2005 for $3.1 billion. <strong>EBay sold it off to a private investor at a 40% loss<\/strong> but when Google and Facebook came a-knocking, Microsoft swooped in and welcomed Skype into the family for $8.56 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Although it had a smaller user base than Windows\u2019s own Live Messenger (roughly a third at the time of the acquisition), Skype had <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2011\/05\/microsoft-buys-skype-2\/\">8 million<\/a> paying customers.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/most-expensive-tech-acquisitions\/microsoft-skype.jpg\" alt=\"Microsoft Skype\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>\n<p><small>Image Source: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2013\/aug\/30\/skype-microsoft-acquisition-analysis\">The Guardian<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>Since then, Skype is pre-installed on every Windows device and is the channel <strong>one-third<\/strong> of the world\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/readwrite.com\/microsofts-skype-now-commands-1-3-of-a-dying-market\/\">video calls<\/a> are on. It also brought in close to $800 million in 2012, which hardly contributed to Microsoft\u2019s overall earnings.<\/p>\n<p>However, it is still a lot better than Microsoft\u2019s acquisition of online advertising company, aQuantive in a 2007 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2012\/07\/02\/technology\/microsoft-aquantive\/\">$6.3 billion<\/a> deal. Oracle buys Sun Microsystems ($7.4 billion)<\/h2>\n<p>Upon buying Sun Microsystems, Oracle took over ownership for Java, the Solaris Operating System and MySQL (considered a threat to Oracle\u2019s business), which Sun had bought two years prior for $1 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The move <strong>effectively kept Java away from IBM\u2019s clutches<\/strong> but saw the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sun_acquisition_by_Oracle\">loss of key engineers<\/a> in Sun, including creator of Java, James Gosling, creator of XML, Tim Bray, CEO Jonathan Schwartz and Sun\u2019s Chief Open Source Officer, Simon Phipps.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/most-expensive-tech-acquisitions\/oracle-sun.jpg\" alt=\"Oracle Sun\" width=\"500\" height=\"326\"><\/figure>\n<p><small>Image Source: Investors.com<\/small><\/p>\n<p>In August 2010, Oracle, locked and loaded, sued Google for \"copyright and patent infringement\" over <strong>the use of Java in its Android platform<\/strong>. Microsoft buys Nokia ($7.2 billion)<\/h2>\n<p>Once the no.1 cellphone manufacturer in the world, Nokia sold its mobile phone unit to Microsoft for more than $7 billion in mid-2013.<\/p>\n<p>Also included are Nokia\u2019s <strong>patent portfolio, mapping services, around 32,000 employees<\/strong> and a chance for Microsoft to break into the mobile device and services market via the Lumia and Asha brands.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/most-expensive-tech-acquisitions\/microsoft-nokia.jpg\" alt=\"Microsoft Nokia\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\"><\/figure>\n<p><small>Image Source: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2013\/9\/3\/4691308\/nokia-microsoft-deal-race-potential-blackberry-interest\">The Verge<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>Conspiracy theorists quickly noted the involvement of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/\/2013\/09\/03\/a-trojan-horse-once-again-stephen-elop-now-evp-of-devices-at-microsoft-confirmed-as-an-internal-candidate-for-ceo-slot-as-he-lays-out-plans-in-his-own-words\/\">Stephen Elop<\/a> in the decision to merge Nokia\u2019s hardware and distribution channels with Microsoft\u2019s Windows Phone platform.<\/p>\n<p>Previously an executive of Microsoft, Elop was <strong>CEO at Nokia during the acquisition<\/strong> and will become the <strong>head of Microsoft\u2019s devices team<\/strong> upon completion of the deal.<\/p>\n<p>Another theory was that Nokia was at the verge of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/analysts-microsoft-bought-nokia-because-nokia-was-going-to-stop-making-windows-phones-2013-9?IR=T\">dumping Windows Phone<\/a> and Microsoft had no other choice but to buy the one last vessel that carry Windows Phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Alternative Purchases:<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thingsthatarecheaperthanwhatsapp.tumblr.com\/\">A colony on Mars<\/a> ($6 billion)<\/p>\n<h2>7. Google buys Nest Labs ($3.2 billion)<\/h2>\n<p>What in the world could Google possibly want with thermostats and smoke detectors when it already has an array of news-generating products \u2013 Chromecast, Chromebook, Android OS, Google Nexus and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/google-glass\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Glass<\/a> \u2013 to its name? Dell buys Quest Software ($2.4 billion)<\/h2>\n<p>Quest Software is a leader in enterprise software solutions comprising of database management, data protection, Windows server management as well as identity and access management.<\/p>\n<p>In light of the decline in hardware and personal computer sales, <strong>Dell outbid rivals with a $2.4 billion offer to acquire Quest.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/most-expensive-tech-acquisitions\/dell-quest.jpg\" alt=\"Dell Quest\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\"><\/figure>\n<p><small>Image Source: John Anthony Signs<\/small><\/p>\n<p>It hopes to push its software business sales to up to $1.2 billion per annum with the help of Quest, which has 3850 employees and 60 offices in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/\/2012\/07\/02\/dell-acquires-quest-software-for-2-4-billion\/\">23 countries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Dell is also reported to have made 19 acquisitions in the past 4 years including for a <strong>storage protection solution company<\/strong>, Credant Technologies (undisclosed), and a <strong>network and data security provider<\/strong>, SonicWall for $1.2 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Alternative purchase<\/strong>: <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thingsthatarecheaperthanwhatsapp.tumblr.com\/\">Burj Khalifa<\/a> ($1.5 bil)<\/p>\n<h2>9. Yahoo! buys Tumblr ($1.1 billion)<\/h2>\n<p>Marissa Mayer joined Yahoo! in July, 2012 and began a shopping spree that involved a variety of startups including Rockmelt, Aviate and the one with the biggest price tag, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/tumblr-tips-tricks-tools\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Tumblr<\/a>. So far, it has shown <strong>no signs of slowing down<\/strong>. Facebook buys Instagram ($1 billion)<\/h2>\n<p>After all that, Facebook buying Instagram, a photo-sharing app for a billion dollars (pfft) sounds like child\u2019s play.
