A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/designing-restaurant-websites\/\">stylish, trendy restaurant<\/a> will attract far more customers than one that is <strong>bland and unappealing<\/strong>. Numerous studies show that effective brand design not only enhances customer satisfaction but also <strong>encourages them to spend more<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>However, how significant is brand design for a business that isn\u2019t yet drawing customers? Many local neighborhood restaurants have thrived for years, or even decades, without any flashy branding. They <strong>fulfill their purpose<\/strong> by offering good food and service, which is what matters most.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/when-brand-design-matters\/apple-store.jpg\" alt=\"Apple Store showcasing sleek brand design\" width=\"600\" height=\"373\"><\/figure>\n<p>This kind of brand analysis should be an integral part of any branding designer\u2019s job. Clients aren\u2019t just hiring you for a logo or a slick website; they\u2019re hiring you to <strong>maximize their brand\u2019s effectiveness in the marketplace<\/strong>. Being selective about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/ideal-client-profile\/\">which clients you work with<\/a> not only helps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/creative-portolio-designs\/\">strengthen your portfolio<\/a> but also educates the design industry on the optimal time to invest in brand design.<\/p>\n<h2>When Do Companies Need Brand Design?<\/h2>\n<p>In my experience, new startups are often the most eager to request branding services, while <strong>being the least likely to actually need them<\/strong>. Instead of focusing on making their businesses profitable, they may waste resources on perfecting their brand\u2019s appearance.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right. Most new startups would do well <strong>not<\/strong> to hire a brand identity designer right away. I\u2019m not hesitant to tell them this, and <strong>if you\u2019re a brand designer working with entrepreneurs, you shouldn\u2019t be either<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>It might seem counterintuitive to turn away these clients (and I often do), but years of experience have taught me something new entrepreneurs often don\u2019t realize: <strong>Your brand is only as valuable as the profit it generates<\/strong>. The primary goal of any business is not to look good but to make money. If a business isn\u2019t profitable, it doesn\u2019t need to be spending money on brand design.<\/p>\n<h2>Ugly Brand, Beautiful Profit<\/h2>\n<p>Apple was profitable long before Jonathan Ive was hired to design the first iMacs. If you\u2019ve ever seen Apple\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edibleapple.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/original_apple_logo.gif\">original logo from the 1980s<\/a>, you\u2019ll notice that 1) it\u2019s unattractive, and 2) <strong>a business doesn\u2019t need a stunning logo from the start<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>What a business needs at the outset is sales. Any designer who suggests otherwise <strong>is misleading the client<\/strong>, potentially harming both the client and themselves. If your client runs out of funds before the branding project is completed, it\u2019s partly your responsibility for not advising them properly from the beginning.<\/p>\n<h2>Just The Right Time<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/powerful-branding-techniques-through-social-media\/\">Brand identity<\/a> becomes crucial for established businesses that have developed their products, built a stable revenue stream, and are ready to target their niche with a memorable, eye-catching brand. <strong>Prioritizing brand identity before business development is risky and often premature<\/strong>. While it can occasionally pay off, more often it\u2019s a costly mistake.<\/p>\n<h2>Designing For Designers<\/h2>\n<p>When a business is truly ready for a rebrand, it can be transformative. A <strong>strong brand can rejuvenate a business<\/strong> and open up new opportunities to connect with customers that your clients may not have even realized existed. But good brand identity design doesn\u2019t just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/minimalistic-business-card-designs\/\">benefit the business<\/a>; it also enriches the design community.<\/p>\n<p>Inspirational brand designs elevate the entire industry by encouraging other designers to create better work for their clients. So, by all means, take on those entrepreneurial clients, but <strong>ensure the timing is right<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>In Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Brand design is vital for staying competitive, especially in today\u2019s highly visual marketplace. There\u2019s no doubt that brand designers face the challenge of discerning which clients genuinely need a rebrand and which might be sabotaging their path to profitability by hiring us prematurely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be considerate towards these new (often young and inexperienced) founders<\/strong> and don\u2019t take their money unnecessarily.
