Most experts think that next year\u2019s technology will meet, and maybe even exceed, the significance of this year\u2019s innovations. Growth of wearable computing<\/h2>\n<p>These computers, disguised as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/next-gen-user-interface\/\">accessories or apparel<\/a> will get a lot of attention in 2014. With wearable computing, the user experience could be even more personal than it is with smartphone and tablet technology, simply because the device is worn on the body. While currently, to access information on portable devices, <strong>users must stop what they\u2019re doing and retrieve the device, phone or tablet<\/strong>, wearable technology requires <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tristanlouis\/2013\/10\/19\/the-wearable-computing-conundrum\/?sh=26cd9b7740f4\">no additional effort<\/a> to interact with the device, which has many worried that, socially, we\u2019re not ready for wearable distractions that will invariably <strong>pull us away from face-to-face interaction.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>2. Sensor Technology<\/h2>\n<p>The city population is at an <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.ie\/world-news\/city-living-number-hit-35bn-high-29823656.html\">all-time high<\/a> of 3.5 billion. By 2050, <strong>that number is expected to double<\/strong>. To keep up with the world\u2019s growing urban population, cities are working to improve efficiency \u2013 with sensors and cloud technology.<\/p>\n<p>Today cities use sensors to <strong>detect <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/making-a-big-play-for-2014-right-now-2013-12-09\">crumbling infrastructure<\/a><\/strong>, find new oil locations, and collect meteorological information via street lights. But the sensors of 2014 will be <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/money\">dramatically more powerful<\/a> and provide valuable, actionable data. BYOD <\/h2>\n<p>BYOD stands for \u201cbring your own device,\u201d and the number of consumer smartphone and tablets brought into workplaces will more than double in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Reactions amongst business leaders are mixed, at best. This super-fast Internet option is <strong>limited in availability<\/strong> though, since both of the top providers, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fiber.google.com\/\">Google Fiber<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.verizon.com\/home\/\">Verizon FiOS<\/a>, have only rolled out the service in certain locations in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>2014 might be a year where we <strong>see more persistence from Americans to gain access to faster Internet speeds<\/strong> that at least approach traditional fiber-optic Internet speeds of 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps. However, the projected 2014 trend for smartphones is exactly the opposite.<\/p>\n<h3>Phablets & Curved Screens<\/h3>\n<p>Users have moved away from the laptop as their go-to portable device in favor of smaller and lighter smartphones and\/or tablets. The result is a <strong>push to combine the two into a smartphone that doubles as a tablet<\/strong> \u2014 the phablet.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to make phablet screens easier to view, developers are creating devices with curved screens that mirror the curve of your eye. LG followed soon after with the G Flex, which can be <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/reviews\/lg-g-flex-review\/\">bent out of shape<\/a> and pressed flat on a desk.<\/p>\n<p>As of late 2013, both devices are only sold in South Korea, but rumor has it they\u2019ll come to the U.S. in early 2014. And of course, there are already rumors that Apple might be <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2013-11-10\/apple-said-developing-curved-iphone-screens-enhanced-sensors\">moving toward a curved screen<\/a> in its next generation iPhone.<\/p>\n<h2>6. 3D printers<\/h2>\n<p>3D printers made it into the news quite often during 2013; <strong>rocket parts, bionic ears and even toothbrushes<\/strong> were all successfully 3-D printed. However, not many of these printers made it into the hands of the everyday consumer. In 2014, experts think that might change.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"3d printers\" height=\"455\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/tech-trends-2014\/3d-printers.jpg\" width=\"600\"><\/figure>\n<p>Metal printers are usually available for half a million, and only to organizations, not for personal use. Earlier this December, Michigan Technological University announced their open source 3D metal <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/affordable-3d-metal-printer-983\/\">printer<\/a>, which is available for only 500.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/affordable-3d-printer\/\/\">3D printers as cheap as 00<\/a> are hitting the market.
