Rather than seeing freelancing as simply a means to an end, it\u2019s important to always start with your client \u2013 or rather, their target user \u2013 <strong>and place yourself in their shoes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are they hoping to experience? <\/strong>Then, it\u2019s simply a matter of deducing which essential skills you need to help that user have the best experience possible.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/keeping-design-skills-fresh\/target-audience.jpg?2\" alt=\"target-audience\" width=\"800\" height=\"615\"><\/figure>\n<p>This is a great tactic to use if you\u2019re confused over which new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/sites-to-learn-coding-online\/\">programming languages you need to learn<\/a>, or what new software you should seek training for. <strong>When the user\u2019s expectations start to change, that\u2019s when you change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Outsourcing for fun, and profit<\/h2>\n<p>Plenty of designers outsource tasks they themselves are less than good at. There\u2019s nothing wrong with doing this, and I\u2019ve recommended it many times in the past to designers who feel overwhelmed by everything they have to do.<\/p>\n<p>However, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/project-management-tips\/\">consulting with a client<\/a>, <strong>it\u2019s essential that you yourself can actually do the thing(s) your client is coming to you for<\/strong>. If you outsource frequently, <strong>stop to consider whether you\u2019d be better off just learning that skill yourself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing what you are doing gives you a confidence that is palpable to clients, and<strong> they will value you a lot more because of it. <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/keeping-design-skills-fresh\/partner-freelancing.jpg?2\" alt=\"partner freelancing\" width=\"800\" height=\"486\"><\/figure>\n<p>As an alternative, <strong>you could also choose to partner up with someone permanently<\/strong> \u2013 perhaps the contractor you primarily outsource to \u2013 and offer a joint service to a much wider pool of clients. Even if you think a skill is \"weird\" or not relevant, it can still often be incorporated somehow, and set you apart from others competing for similar clients.<\/p>\n<p>For example, my love of food and cooking might not seem to have anything to do with design. But not only is it a point of interest that <strong>makes people intrigued<\/strong> about me, I\u2019ve also found that my added experience in the culinary arts puts my niche clients (restaurant owners and chefs) at ease.<\/p>\n<p>They are quite eager to work with <strong>someone who has genuine knowledge and enthusiasm about their industry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Mine your hobbies<\/h2>\n<p>Everyone reading this has hobbies \u2013 stuff you love to do in your spare time without any expectation of getting paid.
