Hide Icons in System Preferences<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ve previously covered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/mac-parental-control-tips\/\">parental control tips and apps<\/a> for Mac, but also in Mac, you can <strong>hide certain icons in the System Preferences<\/strong> so someone else who has access to your Mac (e.g. your nosy kids) won\u2019t be able to find it so easily.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, open <strong>System Preferences<\/strong> then click on <strong>View<\/strong> located on the <strong>Menu Bar<\/strong> followed by <strong>Customize<\/strong>. You\u2019ll then notice checkboxes on the icons. Uncheck the icons you want to hide and click on <strong>Done<\/strong> when you\u2019re finished. The unchecked icons will now be hidden.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/settings-icon.jpg\" alt=\"Settings Icon\" width=\"500\" height=\"460\"><\/figure>\n<h2>2. Disable Dashboard<\/h2>\n<p>If can\u2019t find any use of the Dashboard \u2014 that space in the far left where you can put your widgets \u2014 you can <strong>disable the Dashboard<\/strong> using this command in Terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES<\/pre>\n<p>After that, key in this command to <strong>reset the Dock<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<pre>killall Dock<\/pre>\n<p>If you find you want to <strong>re-enable the Dashboard<\/strong>, enter the command below, and followed by the \u2018killall Dock\u2019 command again.<\/p>\n<pre>defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO<\/pre>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/no-dashboard.jpg\" alt=\"Disable Dashboard\" width=\"500\" height=\"342\"><\/figure>\n<h2>3. Hide Username om Menu Bar<\/h2>\n<p>By default, your account username is shown on the Menu Bar next to the date and time. If you want to clean up your Mac\u2019s Menu Bar, you can remove the username from <strong>System Preferences &gt; Users & Groups &gt; Login Options &gt;<\/strong> Uncheck <strong>Show fast user switching menu as<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Note that you might need to first double click the lock at the bottom left corner and type in your password in order to make these changes.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/hide-name.jpg\" alt=\"Hide Name\" width=\"500\" height=\"378\"><\/figure>\n<h2>4. Permanently Disable Notification Center<\/h2>\n<p>The notification center bugging you with too many updates? Align Dock on Corners of The Screen<\/h2>\n<p>By default, you can position your dock to the left or right of the screen, or at the bottom. By entering this simple command into Terminal, you\u2019ll be able to <strong>align the dock to a corner of the screen<\/strong> instead of the default middle alignment.<\/p>\n<p>This command will align the <strong>horizontal docks to the top corners,<\/strong> and the <strong>vertical dock to the left of the screen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>defaults write com.apple.dock pinning -string start<\/pre>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/dock-align2.jpg\" alt=\"Dock Align\" width=\"500\" height=\"313\"><\/figure>\n<p>This command will align the <strong>horizontal docks to the bottom corners,<\/strong> and the <strong>vertical dock to the right of the screen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>defaults write com.apple.dock pinning -string end<\/pre>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/dock-align.jpg\" alt=\"Dock Align\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>\n<p>To return to the default, <strong>middle alignment<\/strong>, enter this command:<\/p>\n<pre>defaults write com.apple.dock pinning -string middle<\/pre>\n<p>Do note that after entering any of the commands above, you\u2019ll have to <strong>reset the dock with this command<\/strong> in order to see the changes:<\/p>\n<pre>killall Dock<\/pre>\n<h2>6. Use Emoji in Text<\/h2>\n<p>Like iOS, Mac comes built-in with Emoji; to access it, use the keyboard shortcut <span class=\"key\">Command<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">Control<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">Space<\/span> to bring up the special Emoji menu on any text area in any app.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/emoji.jpg\" alt=\"Emoji\" width=\"500\" height=\"310\"><\/figure>\n<h2>7. Find Out Which Application Drains Power<\/h2>\n<p>The Activity Monitor now lets you see more information about your Mac, particularly which app is draining your energy bar. You\u2019ll have to <strong>\u2018show\u2019 Energy Impact<\/strong> by right clicking on the headers and checking it. Once you check Energy Impact, you\u2019ll be able to see which application is taking up the most power (higher value) and stop it to maximize your Mac\u2019s battery life.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/energy-impact.jpg\" alt=\"Energy Impact\" width=\"500\" height=\"335\"><\/figure>\n<h2>8. Disable App Nap on Selected Apps<\/h2>\n<p>Apple implemented <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/\">App Nap<\/a> in Mac to further lengthen your Mac\u2019s battery life by temporary slowing down apps that are not doing anything in the background. However, this slightly reduces the start up time of the app.<\/p>\n<p>If multitasking speed is important to you, you can disable App Nap on selected apps by <strong>right clicking the app<\/strong> and clicking on <strong>Get Info<\/strong>. There, you\u2019ll be able to check Prevent App Nap so that the app doesn\u2019t slow down when it\u2019s not in use in the background. Do note that by disabling App Nap, your battery life drains quicker.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/app-nap.jpg\" alt=\"App Nap\" width=\"500\" height=\"309\"><\/figure>\n<h2>9. Move Dashboard Like Spaces<\/h2>\n<p>The Dashboard can be moved around now, just by clicking and dragging it to where you want to leave it. You can even move it to your secondary monitor on a dual monitor setup.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/move-dashboard.jpg\" alt=\"Move Dashboard\" width=\"500\" height=\"338\"><\/figure>\n<h2>10. See More on Activity Monitor Dock Icon<\/h2>\n<p>The Activity Monitor has several dynamic dock icons you can choose from. Right click on the icon then go to Dock Icon to <strong>choose between four activities to display<\/strong> or switch back to the regular icon by choosing <strong>Show Application Icon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/dock-icon.jpg\" alt=\"Dock Icon\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\"><\/figure>\n<h2>11. Enable Offline Dictation<\/h2>\n<p>In the latest Mac, you can enable offline Dictation by going into the <strong>System Preferences &gt; Dictation & Speech<\/strong> and checking <strong>Use Enhanced Dictation<\/strong>. Use The Built-in Text Expander<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve already mastered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/macos-keyboard-shortcuts\/\">keyboard shortcuts<\/a> to improve your speed and productivity, Mac with a <strong>text expansion<\/strong> feature that allows you to type a predetermined keyword to then expand it to something longer. You can access these settings in <strong>System Preferences &gt; Keyboard &gt; Text<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Do note that this text expansion only works on select Mac Apps.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/text-expansion.jpg\" alt=\"Text Expansion\" width=\"500\" height=\"447\"><\/figure>\n<h2>13. Enable\/Disable Auto App Updates<\/h2>\n<p>Just like iOS, Mac can also automatic app updates for your convenience. However, if you\u2019re one who would read the app update change log and update it yourself, you can <strong>disable automatic app update<\/strong>. Hide Notifications on Lock Screen<\/h2>\n<p>Don\u2019t like lockscreen notifications to pop up on your Mac? Move Application Windows in The Background<\/h2>\n<p>If you need to move a window in the background without switching to it, hold down the <span class=\"key\">Command<\/span> key before clicking and dragging the application windows.<\/p>\n<h2>16. Use The Built-in Spelling and Grammar Checker<\/h2>\n<p>Apple has a built-in spelling and grammar checker that you can use on selected apps. All you have to do is enter this keyboard shortcut to bring it up: <span class=\"key\">Command<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">Shift<\/span> + <span class=\"key\">;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/spell-check.jpg\" alt=\"Spekk Check\" width=\"500\" height=\"380\"><\/figure>\n<h2>17. Show One Application at aTime<\/h2>\n<p>Desperate times call for desperate measures. If multi-tasking is killing your productivity, you can enable a \u2018single application\u2019 mode by entering the following command in Terminal:<\/p>\n<pre>defaults write com.apple.dock single-app -bool true<\/pre>\n<p>You must then enter this command in order to see the changes:<\/p>\n<pre>killall Dock<\/pre>\n<p>This mode allows for <strong>only 1 application to be shown at one time<\/strong>. It might slow down your multitasking speed, but you\u2019ll be able to concentrate more on that one application without being distracted by any other applications in the background.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/mavericks-tips-tricks\/single-app.jpg\" alt=\"Single App\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\"><\/figure>\n<h2>18. Show Dock on Secondary Screen<\/h2>\n<p>You can  make the Dock show on your secondary screen by <strong>moving the mouse cursor right to the bottom of the other screen<\/strong>. Access Hidden  Wallpapers<\/h2>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve updated to the latest version of Mac, you\u2019ll be greeted with new default <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/category\/wallpapers\/\">wallpapers<\/a>. However, there are also some wallpapers that are hidden.
