If you work on a Windows PC and don\u2019t want to build a Hackintosh, you can try this alternative: Elementary OS Luna<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Elementary OS Luna is a Linux distro based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS<\/strong>. It\u2019s the second OS developed by the Elementary OS team after Elementary OS Jupiter (which was based on Ubuntu 10.10).<\/p>\n

The Elementary OS team was motivated by a \"desire to create a Linux-based OS that championed consistency and great design\", and their design ethos focuses on providing a concise and consistent user experience<\/strong> with minimal need for configuration and documentation<\/strong>. For us, Elementary OS is as close to a Mac OS as you can get on a PC.<\/p>\n

Installing Elementary OS Luna<\/h2>\n

Like Ubuntu and its derivatives, Elementary OS Luna is packaged as a live distro<\/strong>. In other words, you can burn it onto a CDr (or create a bootable thumb drive) and boot directly<\/strong> from it for a trial run.<\/p>\n

\"Try<\/figure>\n

If you find that you like it, and want to install it, run the Ubiquity installer from the dock and follow the step-by-step installation process.<\/p>\n

The installer will guide you through the process, so it is a simple, fuss-free process. The installer will even help you install Elementary OS Luna alongside your current OS or replace it entirely.<\/p>\n

\"Beginning<\/figure>\n

Elementary OS Luna: User Interface<\/h2>\n

The first thing you\u2019ll notice when you boot into Elementary OS Luna is its user interface. Luna uses an in-house desktop environment called Pantheon<\/strong>, and at first glance it\u2019s impossible to overlook its similarities to Mac OS X.<\/p>\n

From the dock, to the top bar, to the subtle gradients and monochrome window design, it\u2019s clear that Mac OS X was a big influence on the Elementary OS team\u2019s design philosophy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Elementary<\/figure>\n

However, while the visual similarities are remarkable, they\u2019re mostly skin deep. Elementary OS Luna is still a Linux distro at heart.<\/p>\n

Getting Around<\/h3>\n

Elementary OS Luna\u2019s application launcher is called Slingshot<\/strong>, and is accessible from the left of the top panel. Slingshot can display installed applications as both unsorted and categorised grids<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Elementary<\/figure>\n

The top bar itself is called Wingpanel<\/strong>. Wingpanel is as minimalistic as they come<\/strong>: the aforementioned application launcher on the left, a clock in the middle, and power and connectivity options to the right. Of course, Wingpanel will show icons if apps require it, but it\u2019s fundamentally a minimalist and clean top panel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\"Elementary<\/figure>\n

The Elementary OS Luna dock, codenamed Plank<\/strong>, works exactly like the dock you get in OS X. Plank, like OS X\u2019s dock, highlights the application currently in focus, and has indicators to tell you which apps are currently open.<\/p>\n

In keeping with the Elementary OS ethos, Plank fulfills its role adequately<\/strong>, without extraneous customization and configuration options.<\/p>\n

\"Elementary<\/figure>\n

Pantheon also has support for Hot Corners<\/strong> and Workspaces<\/strong>. In addition, you also have access to window<\/strong> and workspace overview screens.<\/p>\n

Hot Corners allow you to execute commands such as triggering the workspace overview<\/strong> screen or opening Slingshot<\/strong> when your cursor enters one of the display\u2019s corners. This feature is not enabled by default, but can be, in the Desktop<\/strong> section within the System Settings <\/strong>application.<\/p>\n

\"Elementary<\/figure>\n

All in all, Elementary OS Luna\u2019s user interface is a delight to use<\/strong>. It looks great, is smooth and responsive, and manages to be minimal without being too bare bones.<\/p>\n

Elementary OS Luna: Software<\/h2>\n

The Elementary OS team\u2019s focus on minimalism extends beyond Luna\u2019s user interface. Elementary OS Luna comes with only the most basic applications pre-installed.<\/p>\n

Amongst these applications are:<\/p>\n

  • Midori<\/strong>, a web browser<\/li>\n
  • Noise<\/strong>, a music player<\/li>\n
  • Geary<\/strong>, an email client<\/li>\n
  • Shotwell<\/strong>, a photo manager<\/li>\n
  • Totem<\/strong>, a video player<\/li>\n
  • Empathy<\/strong>, an internet messaging client<\/li>\n
  • Scratch<\/strong>, a text editor<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Much like Mac OS applications, these pre-installed applications save upon exit and will restore to state when they\u2019re relaunched.<\/p>\n

    Elementary OS Luna also comes with the requisite software center, system settings (Switchboard<\/strong>) and file manager (Pantheon Files<\/strong>) applications. It doesn\u2019t, however, include an office suite such as LibreOffice. This might seem overly minimal, but it keeps to the design ethos: concise, consistent and minimal.<\/p>\n

    Users with more specific needs will have to turn to the Software Center<\/strong>. Since Luna is based on Ubuntu, there\u2019s a large number of applications to choose from that should fulfill any user\u2019s needs.<\/p>\n

    Pantheon Files<\/h2>\n

    For an example of Elementary OS Luna\u2019s approach to applications, let\u2019s take a look at Luna\u2019s file manager, Pantheon Files<\/strong>. Pantheon Files, like most apps developed by the team for Elementary OS Luna, trades customizability and in-depth settings for a clean user experience.<\/p>\n

    Pantheon Files doesn\u2019t even have a dedicated Settings <\/strong>menu. This doesn\u2019t mean that it\u2019s light on functionality, though. With Pantheon Files, you\u2019re given a choice between three different views (List, Grid and Column) and the ability to Show Hidden Files<\/strong> from the right-click menu.<\/p>\n

    \"Elementary<\/figure>\n

    You also have contextual options such as Compress<\/strong>, Print <\/strong>and Send files via Bluetooth<\/strong> in the same right-click menu. These options sit alongside the usual commands for moving and deleting files. The side panel can also be disabled if you wish.<\/p>\n

    \"Pantheon<\/figure>\n

    Elementary Tweaks: A Plugin<\/h2>\n

    One of the downsides of Elementary OS Luna\u2019s focus on a concise and consistent user interface is a lack of out-of-the-box customization options<\/strong>. There\u2019s barely anything you can do to customize Plank or Pantheon Files, for example.<\/p>\n

    Elementary OS Luna doesn\u2019t have theme support built-in, either<\/strong>. However, you can get access to these options and more by installing Elementary Tweaks.<\/p>\n

    \"Elementary<\/figure>\n

    Elementary Tweaks is a plugin for Elementary OS Luna, accessible through Switchboard, that will give you the ability to tweak a number of system and appearance settings<\/strong>, so that you can get your Elementary OS Luna install to be exactly how you want it. Some of the things you can do with Elementary Tweaks are:<\/p>\n

    • Change icons, themes, button layouts and fonts.<\/li>\n
    • Tweak window animations and drop shadows.<\/li>\n
    • Add and change keyboard shortcuts.<\/li>\n

      Limitations<\/h2>\n

      Elementary OS Luna succeeds at providing something that other Linux distros often struggle with: consistent design <\/strong>and user experience across the board<\/strong> \u2014 but only with the pre-installed applications.<\/p>\n

      Problems arise when you download applications from the Software Center. While they work perfectly fine, these applications were not programmed with Elementary OS in mind<\/strong>. Thus, these applications may not mesh visually with the rest of the OS, and most of the applications don\u2019t save and restore their states upon exiting and relaunching.<\/p>\n

      In addition, it\u2019s possible that Elementary OS Luna will just be too minimal<\/strong> for some users. The fact that it doesn\u2019t come with an office suite or security features<\/strong> such as a built-in firewall may prove to be a problem. To cope, users may have to download Ubuntu applications that, as mentioned, will dilute the very thing that makes Elementary OS Luna stand out<\/strong>: its consistency.<\/p>\n

      Conclusion<\/h2>\n

      On the whole, though, Elementary OS Luna is a good Linux distro that will definitely appeal to users looking for a stable and smooth OS<\/strong> that manages to provide some of Mac OS X\u2019s visual polish and consistent user experience<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
