Let\u2019s roll.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"step01\">Create a bootable OS X Mavericks<\/h2>\n<p>First we will download a copy of the OS X Mavericks. Then we will transfer the installer (packages and files) to our USB flash drive and make it bootable.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch <strong>App Store<\/strong>, go to the <strong>Updates<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/clean-install-mavericks\/1.1-update-all-apps.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"272\" alt=\"update all apps\"><\/figure>\n<li>Hold down the Option key, click <strong>Free Upgrade<\/strong> to download a copy of OS X Mavericks.\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Note #1:<\/strong> Login with your credentials may be required.<\/p>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Note #2:<\/strong> The download may take from 30 minutes to few hours depending on your Internet connection.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/clean-install-mavericks\/1.2-mavericks-free-upgrade.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"167\" alt=\"free upgrade mavericks\"><\/figure>\n<li>Plug in your USB flash drive, open Disk Utility.<\/li>\n<li>Look for your flash drive\u2019s name on the left panel, go to Erase tab, select <strong>\u201cMac OS Extended (Journaled)\u201d<\/strong> format and click <strong>Erase<\/strong>. Close <strong>Disk Utility<\/strong> when it is done.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/clean-install-mavericks\/1.3-erase-thumbdrive.jpg\" alt=\"erase thumb drive\" width=\"600\" height=\"476\"><\/figure>\n<li>Launch <strong>Terminal<\/strong>, paste the following code in and hit <strong>Enter<\/strong>. This will copy Mavericks\u2019 installation files into your USB flash drive. Password verification will be required.\n<pre>sudo \/Applications\/Install\\ OS\\ X\\ Mavericks.app\/Contents\/Resources\/createinstallmedia --volume \/Volumes\/Untitled --applicationpath \/Applications\/Install\\ OS\\ X\\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction<\/pre>\n\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/clean-install-mavericks\/1.4.1-copy-files-command.jpg\" width=\"572\" height=\"102\" alt=\"copy files terminal command\"><\/figure>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Note #1: <\/strong> It may seem like Terminal is idle or not responding  after you hit Enter (most likely like the following screenshot), but that is perfectly normal.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/clean-install-mavericks\/1.4.1-copy-files-process.jpg\" width=\"572\" height=\"178\" alt=\"copy files process\"><\/figure>\n<p>Here\u2019s how your Terminal should look like when the copying process is done. <strong>Quit Terminal<\/strong> but keep your USB flash drive plugged in.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/clean-install-mavericks\/1.4.1-copy-files-done.jpg\" width=\"572\" height=\"229\" alt=\"copy files done\"><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"step002\">Clean Installation<\/h2>\n<p>Now we will make use of the bootable flash drive to perform a clean installation.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Restart your Mac<\/strong>, with the flash drive plugged in. Hold down the Option key when you see the Apple logo. You will then land on a boot menu (like the screenshot below). Double click <strong>Install OS X Mavericks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/clean-install-mavericks\/2.1-select-install-mavericks.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"329\" alt=\"restart mac\"><\/figure>\n<li>On the <strong>OS X Utilities<\/strong> dialogue screen, select <strong>Install OS X<\/strong>. Click <strong>Continue<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/clean-install-mavericks\/2.2-install-os-x-mavericks.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"460\" alt=\"install os x\"><\/figure>\n<li>Follow the on-screen instructions, click <strong>Continue<\/strong> to proceed, <strong>Agree<\/strong> to the software terms then finally s elect  a hard disk, and click <strong>Install<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/clean-install-mavericks\/2.3-proceed-to-installation.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"228\" alt=\"proceed installation\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Note #1:<\/strong> The installation preparation process will now begin and will take approximately 7 \u2013 15 minutes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"note\"><strong>Note #2:<\/strong> During the installation process, you may experience the indicator hanging at <strong>\u201cAbout a second remaining\u201d<\/strong> for few minutes.
