If you have been following our LESS post series, you should know that we have to compile LESS into a regular CSS format that the browser can understand. There are plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/less-tips-tools\/\">free tools<\/a> with a nice GUI to do the job such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Paratron\/SimpLESS\">SimpLESS<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/winless.org\/\">WinLESS<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/codekitapp.com\/index.html\">LESS.app<\/a>, and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/crunchapp.net\/\">ChrunchApp<\/a>. These are all free apps.<\/p>\n<p>However, if for some reason, you are not willing to install yet another app, and are wondering if there is an alternative way, we have a handy workaround for you without being dependent on additional apps.<\/p>\n<p>The compiling process will happen instantly on save, so yes, it is technically similar to how we compile Sass with the <code>watch<\/code> command. They enhance plain CSS with programming features such...\t\t\t\t\t\t<span>Read more<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>First, let\u2019s open up the Terminal (Mac and Linux); if you are running on Windows, you can open Command Prompt. Then, install LESS CSS via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hongkiat.com\/blog\/node-js-server-side-javascript\/\">NPM<\/a> (Node Packaged Modules) with the following command line.<\/p>\n<pre>npm install less --global\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>The command line will grab the LESS package and its dependencies. Note that if you are on Windows, you probably don\u2019t need to run this command with <code>sudo<\/code>.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/less-auto-compile\/less-install.jpg\" alt=\"install LESS\" width=\"500\" height=\"330\"><\/figure>\n<p>Next, navigate to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/jonycheung\/deadsimple-less-watch-compiler\">Dead Simple LESS Watch Compiler<\/a>. This is a compact Node script, developed by Jony Cheung, that tracks modifications in our LESS stylesheet and subsequently compiles them into CSS. Download the ZIP file, extract its contents, and position the <em>less-watch-compiler.js<\/em> in your working directory.<\/p>\n<p>In this illustration, I\u2019ve established two directories; <em>\/less<\/em>, which is where I store my LESS stylesheets, and <em>\/css<\/em>, the location where I prefer the CSS output to be saved.<\/p>\n<p>In Terminal, navigate to your working directory path and run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>node less-watch-compiler.js less css\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>If you find typing <em>less-watch-compiler.js<\/em> too time-consuming, consider renaming the file to something shorter, such as <em>watch.js<\/em>. This will allow you to execute the command more quickly.<\/p>\n<pre>node watch.js less css\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>Consider making some modifications to your LESS stylesheet and then save it. If the compilation process is successful, you should see a standard report as shown.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/less-auto-compile\/less-watch.jpg\" alt=\"LESS watch\" width=\"500\" height=\"280\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Final Thoughts<\/h2>\n<p>By installing this on your system, you eliminate the need for a separate app to compile LESS into CSS.
