The great thing about these messaging apps is that they rely on Internet connection instead of your carrier service, so calls can be made for free and across all supported platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Viber now has taken it a step further by <strong>extending the service to desktop<\/strong>. And it is still free. There\u2019s a new update called Viber Desktop which allows you to now <strong>make video or voice calls across multiple platforms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve given the new app update a run to see what Viber has in store and you may be surprised with some of the new features introduced. Note that to be able to enjoy the new features Viber Desktop has to offer, users need to update their Viber smartphone app to version 3.0.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Download or update your app via the following links.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.viber.voip\">Android<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/us\/app\/viber-free-phone-calls-text\/id382617920\">iOS<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-pk\/p\/viber\/9wzdncrfhxtz?rtc=1&activetab=pivot:overviewtab\">Windows<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Sync to Desktop App<\/h3>\n<p>To start, first download and install <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.viber.com\/en\/download\/\">Viber<\/a> onto your computer. Run Viber. Viber will ask if you have installed the Viber app for smartphone (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.viber.voip&hl=en\">Android<\/a> | <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/my\/app\/viber-free-phone-calls-text\/id382617920\">iOS<\/a>) on your phone.<\/p>\n<p>If you have, you can sync your contacts and chat history to the desktop version. Click \u2018Yes\u2019 when prompted. Punch in your mobile phone number. To change your country code, just click on the \u2018Flag\u2019 icon.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/viber-desktop-windows-mac\/enter-phone-number.jpg\" alt=\"enter mobile number\" height=\"500\" width=\"500\"><\/figure>\n<p>After entering your mobile number, Viber will send a 4-digit verification code to your mobile device to verify that you own the number. Enter the code to verfiy this.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/viber-desktop-windows-mac\/enter-code.jpg\" alt=\"enter verfication code\" height=\"500\" width=\"500\"><\/figure>\n<p>Viber will then load, and all your Viber contacts will sync up in the desktop version of Viber.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/viber-desktop-windows-mac\/contacts-synced.jpg\" alt=\"contact list\" height=\"323\" width=\"500\"><\/figure>\n<h3>Making A Video Call on Viber Desktop<\/h3>\n<p>On the \u2018Contact\u2019 tab, by clicking on a contact you\u2019ll be able to view your chat history with them.You can call them or have a video call by just clicking on \u2018Call\u2019 or \u2018Video\u2019.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/viber-desktop-windows-mac\/select-contact.jpg\" alt=\"click on contact\" height=\"361\" width=\"500\"><\/figure>\n<p>Note that for Video call, <strong>it is currently still in beta<\/strong>, and you\u2019ll need a webcam to use it.<\/p>\n<p>When you use it for the first time, the video feed needs to be turned on. To show your video feed to your friend, just click the video icon (second from left) inside your window.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/viber-desktop-windows-mac\/call-viber.jpg\" alt=\"calling contact\" height=\"360\" width=\"500\"><\/figure>\n<p>If you are making the call from desktop to a smartphone you will not have a video feed. It will just be a regular call.<\/p>\n<h3>Transfer Calls Between Devices<\/h3>\n<p>One fun thing you can have with this Viber update is you can<strong> seamlessly transfer calls <\/strong>between one device and another. This means if you are entertaining a video call on your desktop, you can transfer it to your smartphone without hanging up and making another call.<\/p>\n<p>To do this, in the middle of the call, tap on the \u2018Transfer call\u2019 button to the right of the red \u2018hang up\u2019 icon (see below).<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/viber-desktop-windows-mac\/viber-desktop-transfer.jpg\" alt=\"viber desktop transfer\" width=\"500\" height=\"301\"><\/figure>\n<p>The device the call is transferred to will start ringing and you can pick up the call from there.<\/p>\n<h3>Send Location<\/h3>\n<p>Another handy feature you can use on Viber is the ability to send your location. To do this, just send a \u2018Location Message\u2019. The receiver can then open up the link which shows your location in Google Maps.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.hongkiat.com\/uploads\/viber-desktop-windows-mac\/location-message-google-maps.jpg\" alt=\"location message google map\" width=\"500\" height=\"316\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Limitations<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ve also found a few limitations.<\/p>\n<p>1. So far, the app <strong>does not support multiple conference<\/strong>. When you are in the middle of a call, you cannot receive another call. The caller will see you as \u2018Busy\u2019 and you will receive a \u20181 Missed Call\u2019 notification from the caller.<\/p>\n<p>2. While you can have video call on the desktop app, <strong>you cannot however, add contacts via the desktop app<\/strong>. Contacts can be added via the smartphone app and then synced over to the desktop app, hence this isn\u2019t a big problem.<\/p>\n<p>3.
