WhatsApp<\/a> for Android and iOS has a built-in chat backup function, but it will only backup your chats and media directly to your iCloud<\/strong> or Google Drive<\/strong> account, and you can restore your data from these accounts when required.<\/p>\n

For this, however, you\u2019ll need to be signed in on these accounts before you can access your backup<\/strong> \u2013 which could be a problem if you lose your phone or lose access<\/strong> to these accounts.<\/p>\n

You can also manually export your chats<\/strong> (with or without media files) as a text file<\/strong>, so you can read every conversation you\u2019ve ever had per contact. It only works per contact and it\u2019s not secure<\/strong>, since it\u2019s on plain text \u2013 you can literally open it with your phone, or through Notepad\/TextEdit.<\/p>\n

For better security<\/a>, you can turn on End-to-End Encrypted Backup<\/strong> by going to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup<\/strong> > and turn on the option. This way, even if you export or backup your iCloud or Google Drive, and even if someone gains access to these accounts, they won\u2019t have access to your messages since they are encrypted.<\/p>\n
